How to Match the Right Type to the Job
Landscape & ConcreteBefore picking a cable, figure out which job you’re actually doing. This category covers two completely different worlds. One is load-bearing wire rope — the stuff that lifts, rigs, tensions a railing, or runs a winch. The other is cable chains, also called drag chains or energy chains, which guide and protect moving cables on machinery and carry no load at all. Then there’s the garden side: boundary wire for robotic mowers and weatherproof extension reels. Three jobs. Three different products. Get that sorted first and everything else falls into place.

Wire rope is built from strands wound together, and the construction number tells you how flexible or stiff it is. That number is the core selection decision. Select construction by application: 7x19 for high flexibility in pulleys and hoists, 7x7 for moderate flexibility in winches and rigging, and 1x19 for stiffness and low stretch in railings and stays. Pick wrong and you either get a cable too stiff to run over a sheave or one that stretches when you needed it to hold tight.
Two rules carry every rigging job. Always verify load requirements, apply a 5:1 safety factor, and ensure cable bend radii align with system sheaves. That safety factor isn’t padding — it’s the difference between a cable that works and one that snaps under a shock load. And bend radius matters: run a stiff cable over a tight pulley and you’ll work-harden the wire until it fails.

The 7x7 in the lighter diameters suits winch and rigging work where you want moderate flex. The 7x19 in 3/16 and 1/4 inch flexes more — better for anything running over pulleys.
A note on coating for Montana. Galvanized resists rust better than plain steel in wet, freeze-thaw conditions, which is exactly what an exposed cable faces here through snowmelt and ice-melt season. Coated cable adds a polymer jacket on top of that. For anything outdoors getting hit by moisture cycling, the corrosion resistance earns its place.
Cable railing is one of the most common deck applications, and it has its own standard. For railings, 1/8-inch or 3/16-inch 316-grade stainless steel is the standard to resist corrosion. The grade matters more than people think — 316 stainless holds up against corrosion better than 304 on exposed outdoor railings, and on a Montana deck dealing with snow, ice-melt, and constant freeze-thaw moisture, that corrosion resistance is the whole point.
End fittings come two ways. Terminals include swage fittings, which use a hydraulic crimp, or swageless fittings, which use a mechanical grip. Swage needs the right tool to crimp properly. Swageless lets you assemble by hand — handy when you don’t own a hydraulic crimper.
Don’t confuse a cable chain with load-bearing cable. A cable chain is a mechanical system that protects, supports and guides cables and media hoses in permanently moving machine applications. It doesn’t lift anything. Cables and media hoses are subjected to millions of bending movements along the travel distance in the cable chain, where power, servo and data cables sit close together and move back and forth as a machine works. Think CNC equipment, woodworking machinery, automation — anywhere a cable has to flex over and over without breaking.
The terminology trips people up. A cable chain is the same thing as a power chain, power guiding chain, cable drag chain, or cable carrier. All one product class.
Choosing one comes down to environment, travel, and bend radius. Choose based on the environment — nylon for general and sliding applications, steel for high-heat or chip exposure, hybrid for critical needs — plus travel distance and bend radius requirements. The enclosure depends on how dirty the job gets. Systems range from open designs for clean environments to fully enclosed for debris protection. Open frames work where things stay clean; sealed designs keep out dust, chips, and chemicals.
Cold matters here, and it matters in Montana. Nylon chains lose mechanical strength below about -15°C, so for outdoor or unheated cold applications, steel or a special-compound chain is the safer call. Don’t put a general-purpose nylon chain on something that lives in an unheated shop through a Flathead winter.
Installation is straightforward but unforgiving on a couple of points. Installation involves securing the fixed and movable end brackets and using internal separators to prevent entanglement. Inside the chain, the cables need to lie right. Cables and hoses should lie loosely next to each other in the chain chambers, separated as much as possible using separators, and installed symmetrically by weight and size — larger diameters and weights on the outside, smaller ones on the inside. The whole point is letting cables move freely without binding. Cable chain cables run the lowest possible weight because the chain must support its own weight plus the cables placed in it, which is why chains must always be designed around the cable and hose features, not the other way around.
The lawn-and-garden side of this category is boundary wire and weatherproof extension reels — the cable that keeps a robotic mower on track and the reel that powers tools out in the yard.
Boundary wire comes in a range of thicknesses, and heavier is more durable in the ground. It’s available in diameters from 2.45mm up through 4.2mm, on drums from 50 up to 1,200 meters. The grades step up by thickness:

The construction is built for being buried. It’s made of tinned copper for better conductivity, on a spool that allows easy unwinding and prevents tangling. The strongest grades carry the heaviest insulation and protective sheathing, and suit places with rooting mice or spots that often need repair. That tinned copper conductor with PE insulation resists soil exposure and rooting animals — worth the upgrade where you’ve got burrowing pests chewing wire. When a buried loop does get cut, a repair kit with connectors splices it back together rather than rerunning the whole run.
For powering tools out in the yard, an outdoor extension reel needs a weatherproof rating and cold-rated cable. Look for IP44 or IP54 protection so splashing water stays out of the sockets. A weatherproof reel with two power outlets handles multiple tools at once, and weatherproof sockets seal the plugs in use against splashing water. Cold rating is the Montana piece: some garden cable stays usable down to -35°C and resists UV, which is exactly what you want for a reel that lives outdoors through the seasons here.
What’s the difference between a cable chain and regular cable? They do opposite jobs. Regular wire rope carries load — lifting, rigging, tensioning a railing, running a winch. A cable chain carries nothing. It’s a mechanical system that protects, supports and guides cables and media hoses in permanently moving machine applications. Match the construction to whether the cable needs to bend often or hold tight without stretching.
