Here’s the thing most folks get wrong at the garden aisle: peat moss, potting soil, and seed-starting mix aren’t the same product, and they don’t do the same job. Grab the wrong bag and you’ll fight your plants all season.

Start with what peat moss actually is. It’s a lightweight, spongy, fibrous material harvested from peat bogs, formed by the partial decomposition of sphagnum moss and other plant materials over thousands of years. Because it’s lightweight, moisture retentive, doesn’t compact, is readily available and is acidic, it has many uses in the garden. But it’s not a complete growing soil. Peat moss is essentially carbon and water. Plants growing in peat-heavy mixes need separate fertilization, and the peat itself doesn’t feed soil biology.

Two properties drive every decision. First, water. Sphagnum peat can hold roughly 15 to 20 times its dry weight in water. That matters in dry, fast-draining Montana soils where summer watering eats your weekends. Second, acidity. Peat is naturally acidic, pH typically 3.5 to 4.5. That acidity is the trap most buyers overlook. More on that below.

One catch worth knowing before the bag goes in the cart. Peat repels water when fully dry, so you have to wet it slowly before it starts behaving the way you want.

Seed-Starting Mix vs. Potting Soil vs. Raw Peat

This is where the confusion lives, so let’s settle it.

Seed-starting mixes are the fine stuff. Soilless seed-starting mixes have a finer texture and are made from ingredients such as milled peat moss, perlite, coconut coir fiber and vermiculite. They run lean on nutrients on purpose — seedlings live off stored energy in the seed at first.

Potting soils are a different animal. Although potting soils may be used to start seeds, they tend to have a more coarse texture and may contain field soil, compost or composted manure along with vermiculite, peat moss or perlite. Many carry a fertilizer charge. Some seed-starting or potting mixes may contain fertilizer as an additive. Read the package. Some products contain enough fertilizer to provide seedlings with sufficient nutrients to last up to three months, while others may have no added nutrients.

Raw peat by itself? Limited use. Peat is not commonly used as a standalone product. By itself it’s not a good growing medium beyond starting seeds from scratch. Even though peat can help your soil retain nutrients, it hardly contains any nutrients at all in and of itself. Peat also doesn’t add sufficient nutrients to the soil for healthy plant growth on its own so you have to add other organic components like topsoil along with it.

Don’t reach for the backyard dirt to fill containers, either. Field soil packed into pots invites compaction and drainage problems, and it can carry weed seed and pathogens that sterile peat doesn’t.

A word on the “organic” label. It doesn’t automatically mean what you think. The term “organic” on the package does not mean that the mix would be acceptable for starting organic seedlings. Read the package closely to determine if the soil and other additives are approved for organic production. To mix your own and stretch a budget: one-third part sphagnum peat moss or coconut coir fiber with one-third part finely screened compost and one-third part vermiculite. Add about 1 to 2 cups of worm compost to a 5 gallon bucket of soil mix.

For peat texture, match the grain to the job. Finer screened grades suit germination and plug work. Screened, short-fiber professional peat moss is recommended for any situation when a fine growing medium is required — most often used in golf course construction, mushroom production, seed starting, and plug production. Coarser peat earns its keep loosening up heavy ground.

Application Ratios for Beds, Lawns, and Plantings

Vague “improves your soil” advice helps nobody. Here are the numbers.

Soil amendment, general rule: when used as a soil amendment, use two parts soil to one part peat moss. For flower beds specifically, mix 30% peat with 70% garden soil for better root development and nutrient retention.

For new lawn work, don’t seed and walk away. After seeding, fertilizing and watering lightly, carefully spread a top dressing. Moisten daily for 2-3 weeks. In short, hot Montana summers that daily moisture is what gets germination over the line.

On lawns especially, restraint pays. Commercial blenders keep peat to a quarter of the mix for a reason. Blending peat at a rate of 25% provides the moisture and nutrient retention qualities that complement the other organics while not making drastic changes to the soil’s pH.

The pH Question — and When Compost Beats Peat

This is the part that bites people. Peat lowers soil pH, and most lawns and vegetables want it close to neutral. Ideal pH for both lawns and vegetable gardens should be between 6.5-7.0 — slightly acidic.

Pour straight peat on a lawn and you can do real harm. Peat alone is not often used for lawns since its low pH / acidity hinders grass growth and can kill earthworms. That’s why it belongs in a blend, not as a standalone topdressing on turf.

Now, the regional angle. Where native soils tend to be neutral to slightly alkaline — pH of 7.0 and above — adding peat in a quality soil blend can improve the soil while gently lowering the pH to within the optimal range. Plenty of western soils trend that direction, so peat’s acidity can actually work in your favor. But test first. If the soil tests within the 6.0-6.9 range or lower, consider a soil blend that uses compost rather than peat so you do not reduce the soil’s pH into a much too acidic state.

For a lot of in-ground work, compost is the smarter default. Most quality compost has a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. It won’t significantly change the soil’s pH and is safe for almost any planting. The straightforward division: peat shows up in most commercial potting mixes, seed-starting blends, and bagged garden soil products, while lawn topdressing wants a 1/4 to 1/2 inch layer of fine compost in spring or fall to improve soil structure without smothering grass.

Want both worlds? Blueberries and rhododendrons can benefit from peat in the planting hole, although elemental sulfur is more controllable long-term when managing acidity over years rather than a single season.

Grades, Sizes, and Alternatives

Peat ships compressed and fluffs up when you wet it — the product is compressed and expands. Plan your quantity around the expanded volume, not the brick in the bag.

Consumer bags commonly run 1.0, 2.2, 3.0, and 3.8 cubic feet. Professional grades scale way up — 3.8 and 5.5 cubic foot bags, plus 55 and 110 cubic foot bulk bags for high-volume operations.

Coconut coir is the alternative that keeps coming up. Coconut coir, a natural byproduct of coconut production, is gaining popularity as an excellent alternative to peat moss — a material that’s both sustainable and performs well in soil conditioning. It handles moisture management in containers and sandy ground without peat’s acidity.
