The right wheelbarrow comes down to four things: capacity, tray material, wheel configuration, and tire type. Match those to what you actually haul and the ground you haul it across — not to price. Capacity gets measured in cubic feet, but the number that actually limits you is the weight rating. Fill a 6 cubic foot tray with wet soil or gravel and you’ll hit 500 pounds before the tray looks half full. Fill that same tray with mulch and you’ll push it all day.

Start with the load. A barrow built for compost is the wrong tool for broken concrete, and a single-wheel that flies down a flat garden path becomes a fight on a sloped rural lot. Here’s how to sort it out.

Capacity: Volume Says One Thing, Weight Says Another

Cubic feet tells you how much volume the tray holds. Weight capacity tells you how much it can actually carry. For dense materials, the weight limit is what matters first.

The 6 cubic foot tray is the workhorse. It clears standard gates, fits in truck beds, and stays controllable on slopes with a full load. For mulch, soil, plantings, and general cleanup, it handles the job.

Step up to 8 cubic feet when you’ve got room to move. It carries more per trip on open properties — ideal for high-volume mulch runs and seasonal cleanup. The tray adds length over the 6 cubic foot, so measure your gate widths first.

The 10 cubic foot is the top end. It’s the max-volume option and only comes in a two-wheel configuration. Best for bulk mulch and loose material on open ground. Rated to 750 pounds, it handles heavier loads than the 6 and 8 cubic foot models. These ship motor freight.

Do the weight math before you load. Four cubic feet of wet compost weighs 180 to 220 pounds. Wet soil and gravel hit the limit faster than the volume suggests.

Tray Material, Wheels, and Tires

The conventional wisdom — steel for heavy, poly for light — gets it backwards for a lot of garden work. Poly is the right call for most landscape work. It won’t rust, cleans out quickly, and doesn’t hold onto wet material. For mulch, soil, compost, fertilizer, and general landscape debris, poly is the low-maintenance choice.

The freeze-thaw angle matters here. Rubbermaid offers items made of what they call structural foam. This sounds weak, but it’s amazingly strong — a structural foam wheelbarrow pan won’t even crack if it’s filled with water and left to freeze solid in winter. In Montana, where a forgotten barrow can sit full of rainwater and freeze rock-solid, that’s a real advantage over standard plastic. Don’t confuse structural foam with regular plastic pans that often crack in short order. Structural foam is tough, and it never rusts.

Steel earns its place on abrasive loads. It’s worth it when you’re regularly moving sharp or abrasive material: broken concrete, flagstone, river rock, demolition debris. Steel resists gouging better than poly under that kind of load. You give up some weight and need to rinse it after wet jobs, but it outlasts poly when the material is rough.

One warning on cheap steel and wet organic loads. A standard painted-steel tray used for regular compost work shows rust through the tray bed at the weld seams within two to three seasons. Epoxy powder-coated steel is a different matter — the coating bonds mechanically to the surface, runs thicker than spray finishes, and resists the chemical action of organic loads for years.

Tray shape changes how you dump. Rounded-nose trays tip at any angle — forward, sideways, or diagonal into a bed corner. Flat-bottom trays tip forward only.

Wheel configuration. For gardens with firm, level paths and loads under 150 pounds, a single-wheel handles every task without compromise. Single-wheel barrows thread cleanly through the 28 to 32 inch openings most garden paths and gates measure. Where they struggle is on lateral slopes.

Two wheels win on rough Montana ground. Two wheels distribute load sideways across a wider base, so the barrow stabilizes without active correction on uneven and sloping terrain. For properties with slopes over 10 to 12 degrees, soft ground that shifts under load, or loads exceeding 200 pounds, two wheels reduce both the physical effort and the tipping risk. The trade-off: two-wheel designs typically run 32 to 36 inches at their widest, and they require a wider arc to change direction.

Tires. Pneumatic tires are air-filled. They absorb shock better on rough terrain and roll more easily over uneven ground. But they can puncture. On sites with debris, nails, or thorns, a flat tire mid-job is a real risk. Flat-free tires are solid foam-fill — no inflation, no punctures, no stopping mid-job. For regular route work, flat-free is the obvious call. They never go flat in the cold, which is worth something through a Montana winter. The cost: they’re a bit heavier and have slightly more rolling resistance on hard surfaces.

Handles. Hardwood handles are thick enough to grip well in gloves and easy to replace when they wear out. Steel handles run 18-gauge galvanized tubing — heavier, but they won’t warp or crack if the barrow lives outside year-round. That last part matters if your barrow stores in an open shed through the season.

When a Cart or Dolly Beats a Wheelbarrow

A wheelbarrow isn’t always the right tool. For bulk material on flat ground, four wheels stay put while you load. Utility wagons are four-wheeled and stable on flat ground, carrying up to 1,000 pounds without the balancing act of a single-wheel barrow. Good for flat properties and large bulk material moves.

For nursery work, flatbed carts shine. Flatbed nursery carts are built for moving flats, potted plants, and bagged material on flat ground, and 2-wheel and 4-wheel versions carry up to 850 pounds. Moving trees is its own job. Tree carts and cradle lifts handle balled-and-burlapped trees and large containers, carrying up to 1,000 pounds with a cradle that protects the root ball. That’s a job a wheelbarrow won’t do safely.

High-capacity garden carts move fluffy bulk well but know their limits. They won’t stand up well to concrete, rocks, firewood and other hard items, but garden carts are terrific for moving the kind of large volumes of fluffy material that gardening often involves. You can’t mix a load of mortar in one, but it’s first-rate for carrying bulky gardening supplies, prunings and topsoil.

What to Check Before You Buy

Build quality decides whether a barrow lasts two seasons or twenty. The best general-purpose barrows generally have a steel pan, one-piece handles, and a flat-free tire — though structural foam is the one plastic-type pan worth running. Look for proper wheel bearings over plastic bushings.

Kick the tires, literally. There are lots of models with rock-hard, solid rubber tires, but they don’t work well except for the lightest-duty jobs. If you think you need a wheelbarrow, you probably need a better-than-basic model — an air-filled or flat-free tire. One caution on bargain flat-free tires: beware the cheap ones, because they split and crack in the sun.

Worn parts don’t mean the barrow’s done. Replacement hardwood handles drop in with pre-drilled holes, and a nose brace is a cheap fix. If the frame and tray are solid, worn handles or a cracked nose brace don’t mean the wheelbarrow is finished.

Confirm assembly before the first job. Assembly requirements vary by model — check each product page for whether the wheelbarrow ships assembled or requires assembly.

Store it right and it lasts. Keep the barrow upended in a sheltered, dry spot to prevent water sitting in the tray and rusting the frame.
