Here’s the thing most buyers get wrong: you don’t pick these by size or price. You pick them by Working Load Limit. A few fittings demand correct installation to stay safe. Cold shuts are the prime example. With a hammer, drive the open end through the cold shut eye, then peen the extended end to prevent it opening. And remember — cold shuts should not be reused after closure has been made. One and done.

Inspection keeps a rig honest over its life. Pull any component from service when wear exceeds 10% of the original dimension. Watch for the danger signs: burned links, nicks, gouges, bent links, corrosion pits, excessive wear, stretch or deformation, deformed hooks, and abrasion. Gear stored outdoors or in corrosive conditions develops corrosion pits and flaky rust — that’s a remove-from-service condition, not a cosmetic one.
