How to Choose Clips, Thimbles, and Ferrules for Wire Rope
Landscape & ConcreteA length of wire rope isn’t worth much until you can terminate the ends and form a load-bearing loop. That’s what cable accessories do. The category breaks into three working parts: wire rope clips that clamp and secure cable ends, thimbles that protect the loop from wear and sharp bending, and ferrules that swage onto the cable to form a permanent eye. These accessories are designed for securing, clamping, and protecting wire ropes in construction, rigging, and DIY projects.

Here’s the one rule that matters more than any other: match the accessory size to your cable diameter. Exactly. A 3/16-inch clip belongs on 3/16-inch cable — not a size up, not a size down. Match ferrule, thimble and stop size to size of cable. Get this wrong and the connection won’t hold a load safely. For ranchers running guy wires, fence builders, and anyone hanging a trellis or anchoring a structure through Montana’s wet springs and freeze-thaw cycles, that’s the difference between a fix that lasts and one that lets go.
Clips and thimbles run a wide range of trade sizes. Trade sizes cover 1/16 in, 1/8 in, 3/16 in, 1/4 in, 5/16 in, 3/8 in, 1/2 in, 5/8 in, and 3/4 in. Ferrules and stops cover the lighter end of that spread. Ferrules for cable diameters of 1/16 in, 3/32 in, 1/8 in, 3/16 in, and 1/4 in are available in aluminum and copper.
Finish is the other call you make, and outdoors it matters. These products typically feature a galvanized finish for corrosion resistance, making them suitable for outdoor and marine environments. For exposure that demands more — wet ground, repeated freeze-thaw, anywhere salt or chemicals come into play — there’s a step up. Cast stainless steel clips and thimbles are offered in 1/8 in, 3/16 in, and 1/4 in sizes for higher corrosion resistance. Ferrules come in aluminum and copper; clips are made in malleable iron and steel.

Two ways to terminate a cable end, and they’re not the same job.
A clip-and-thimble setup is the reusable route. Sets come as two wire rope clips with one thimble. Installation involves tightening the regular hex nuts on the clips to ensure a secure, firm grip on the cable. All you need is a wrench. If you ever have to take the connection apart or redo it, you can.
A ferrule is permanent. You crimp it down and it stays. Insert the ferrule onto the cable, form the loop and insert a thimble if desired, then use a proper swaging tool — not a hammer — to make the swages. That hammer warning isn’t a suggestion. A swaging tool compresses the ferrule evenly around the cable; a hammer deforms it and gives you a connection you can’t trust under load.
One detail trips people up on coated cable. If used on coated cable, remove the coating from the assembly area before swaging. The crimp has to bite the steel, not the vinyl.
Either method, run a thimble in the loop. A thimble prevents rope fraying or deformation at connection points. It holds the eye open and keeps the cable from kinking against itself where it bends sharpest — which is exactly where a loop fails first.
What size clip do I need for my cable? Match the clip trade size to the cable diameter, one to one. A 3/16-inch cable takes a 3/16-inch clip. The manufacturer instruction is to match ferrule, thimble and stop size to the size of the cable. Mixing sizes compromises the whole connection.
Galvanized or stainless? For most outdoor fencing and guy wire work, galvanized handles it. A galvanized finish provides corrosion resistance suitable for outdoor and marine environments. When the exposure is harsher and you want longer life, stainless is the upgrade — cast stainless steel clips and thimbles are made in 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 in.
Can I crimp a ferrule with a hammer? No. Use a proper swaging tool, not a hammer, to make the swages. A hammer won’t compress the ferrule evenly, and the connection won’t hold reliably.
Do I need a thimble in the loop? You want one. Thimbles prevent rope fraying or deformation at connection points. They protect the cable from wear and sharp bending right where stress concentrates.
What’s the difference between a clip set and a ferrule? A clip set is reusable and needs only a wrench to tighten the hex nuts for a firm grip on the cable. A ferrule makes a permanent swaged loop but requires a swaging tool. Choose based on whether you need to undo the connection later and what tools you’ve got on hand.
