Metal fence posts, also known as fence stakes or T-posts, are fencing hardware used to offer support and rigidity to fencing structures. Light garden border? A U-post does the work. Livestock run or a permanent perimeter? You want a studded T-post. Tension points where the fence corners or a gate hangs? Those need something heavier still.

Get the profile wrong and you’ll be re-driving bent posts come spring. Steel beats wood for one big reason in this country: metal fence posts are generally more durable and resistant to rot and infestation, making them a suitable choice for areas with adverse weather conditions. No rot at the ground line, no carpenter ants, no swelling and shrinking through Montana’s temperature swings.
Three shapes cover almost every fencing job, plus a heavier assembly for the tension points.
Studded T-posts are the workhorse. These are strong, heavy fence posts made with hot-rolled high carbon, high tensile rail steel, naturally resistant to weathering, with strong holding power for any farm or home fencing material. The studs matter: studs are spaced every 2-1/8 inches apart the entire post length, and they prevent the fence from riding up or down the post. Anchor plates run 3½ by 5½ inches, securely swaged to the post for added stability. Studded T-posts are heavier, stronger, and hold up fences better than U posts. They come rust-resistant and easy to install, popular in rural areas, often used in farms for livestock fencing, and work with both wire and wood fencing.
U-posts are the lighter, cheaper option. They’re medium-duty steel fence posts made from 13 gauge steel, excellent for supporting lighter-weight fencing materials. Light-duty versions step down to 14 gauge. The anchor plate is smaller — 2¾ by 4½ inches, riveted to the post — and the fastening features run the length: punched ¼-inch holes spaced 6 inches apart with self-fastening lugs every 6 inches, the bottom lugs facing downward to keep fencing from riding up. Use these for temporary fencing or light-duty applications — a short-term boundary for a garden, for example.
Corner, gate, and end posts carry the loads everything else hangs off. The breakdown is plain: posts that support the straightaway body of the fence are line posts; the posts needed at the end or corner and at gates are end, corner, and gate posts. Weight tells the story — line posts carry a nominal weight of 1.33 pounds per foot, while angle-type end, corner, and gate posts run 4.10 pounds per foot for upright members, with bracing members at 3.19 pounds per foot. For gates specifically, the surrounding posts need to be sturdy enough to support the weight of the gate and frequent use, which often involves using larger or reinforced posts and specialized gate hardware.
As for line post shape, there’s room to work: line posts may be Tee, U, Y, channel, or other suitable section, with corrugations, knobs, notches, holes, or studs placed to engage fence line wires in proper position. One thing that’s ruled out — posts with punched tabs used for fastening wires aren’t standard, because of the risk of injury to fence wires when tabs are crimped and the tendency of tabs to fracture upon removal and refastening.
Match the post length to fence height plus bury depth. Galvanized T-posts come in a wide range of lengths and weights.

Those galvanized weights and the full length range run from 5 feet up through 12 feet, sold in bundles of five.
Gauge is the U-post conversation. Medium-duty U-posts are 13 gauge. Light-duty drops to 14-gauge steel — a light-duty U-style post, good for residential gardens to agricultural fencing. The heavier the gauge number, the thinner the steel, so 13-gauge holds more than 14.
Finish drives how long the post lasts in the ground. Hot-dip galvanizing is the one you want for wet or acidic soils — it outlasts painted or electrogalvanized steel. T-posts come in two finishes: green baked enamel paint and hot-dipped galvanized, and the galvanized version meets Federal Highway fence specifications. The coating adds a touch of weight — enamel T-posts run about 1.25 pounds per foot while galvanized run 1.33 pounds per foot. U-posts are commonly offered with a durable rust-resistant green PVC coating. Worth knowing for finished posts: painting or applying a protective coat increases resistance to rust and extends lifespan — just clean thoroughly and apply a primer or undercoat first.

Two methods, and which one you use depends on the post’s job.
For driven T- and U-posts along the run, a driver does it fast. A post driver is the fast, safe way to install steel fence posts — no sledge hammer, which can cause serious injury, and no standing on a ladder. The tool is simple: a 30-inch pipe capped at one end that slides over the post top; you grasp the handles and hammer posts straight into the ground letting gravity do the work, and it fits all types of U and T fence posts.
Depth is the rule that keeps posts from heaving out. The depth depends on fence height, but typically a third to half the length of the post should be buried underground — for a standard six-foot fence, post holes should be around two feet deep. In Montana that depth rule bends to one bigger principle: set below the frost line. Spring snowmelt keeps the ground saturated for weeks at the ground line, and freeze-thaw will push a shallow post right out of the dirt.
Corner and gate posts get the concrete treatment. Dig generous holes — 6 to 10 inches in diameter and 30 inches deep, with exact diameter and depth determined by local conditions, setting the post bottom 30 inches below surface in firm, undisturbed soil. Mix matters: use concrete with a minimum 28-day compressive strength of 3,000 psi (20 MPa). When you pour, center posts in holes, make sure they’re plumb and square to the fence line, block and support to preserve position, then place concrete in a continuous pour, mounding the top to direct water away from the post. That mounded top is the detail people skip — it sheds water away from the steel instead of letting it pool at the ground line.
Spacing the line posts: typically six to eight feet apart, with exact spacing depending on the fencing material, the fence design, and the property’s requirements. For U-posts the window runs a bit wider — 5 to 10 feet depending on the fence type. A working sequence for terminal posts: once concrete has hardened in the corner and gate posts, stretch a string between them to help set the line posts at the correct height.
