Here’s the honest take: 4 mil is the right call for general construction covering, protecting stored material, and light-duty barrier work. It is not the choice for serious crawl space encapsulation or a code-driven vapor barrier where the inspector wants thicker film. For those jobs, you move up to 6, 10, or 15 mil. Match the thickness to the work, and check what your local code requires before you commit.

What You’re Actually Buying

Most black poly is heavy-duty opaque low-density film, construction grade, used in construction, masonry, and remodeling. The opacity does real work: polyethylene black sheeting handles many construction and DIY projects, holds up for construction and agriculture, and sun-resistant black outperforms clear in outdoor applications.

One spec point matters before you put it in the sun for the long haul. Standard construction-grade black poly is not UV treated. Some products list UV resistance and some don’t, so read the spec on the exact roll you’re buying. For temporary covers and barrier work that lives under concrete or behind drywall, UV isn’t a factor. For anything sitting exposed all summer, it matters.

On standards, the better construction-grade film carries recognized ratings. It meets ASTM D4397 and ASTM D2103. The film is also not perforated and can be used as a vapor barrier.

If you’re working an indoor containment site or anywhere fire code applies, that changes the spec. Fire-retardant poly versions exist that meet NFPA 701 Test 1, ASTM E-84, and California Title 19 for indoor containment and industrial sites.
