Clear 4-mil poly is the do-everything middle grade of plastic sheeting. It’s a versatile low-density polyethylene film designed for construction and DIY use, balancing flexibility and durability, which makes it a standard choice for dust containment, temporary enclosures, concrete curing covers, and moisture protection in walls or crawl spaces. For most general-purpose jobs around a Montana jobsite, 4-mil is the thickness to reach for first.

One thing to settle up front: this is construction-grade film, not a certified building product. It’s made from LDPE (low-density polyethylene), and the sheeting is construction grade film, usually milky in appearance — not perfectly clear. It meets ASTM D2103. The big catch worth knowing before you buy: it is not UV treated and not flame retardant. Leave it stapled to a south wall through a Flathead summer and the sun will chew it up.

Matching Mil Thickness to the Job

Thickness is the first decision, and it’s the one buyers get wrong most often. Lighter film tears under abuse; heavier film costs more and is overkill for a drop cloth. Here’s where 4-mil sits in the lineup.

4-mil clear poly is the most popular choice for demanding applications like insulating, roofing, and landscaping projects. It’s a real step up from the light-duty films but still below the heavy-duty range. When the job is a critical, permanent vapor barrier or a crawl space you’re encapsulating for good, step up to 6-mil or heavier. For everything in between, 4-mil earns its keep.

A note on clear versus black: clear is the economical color and lets light through, which suits interior wall work and greenhouse-style covers. Black poly is the call when you need to block light and want better resistance to sun exposure. For covering lumber stacks, taping off a remodel, or running a temporary wall barrier, clear 4-mil does the work.

What 4-Mil Clear Poly Is Good For

Buyers grab poly for a dozen unrelated jobs, and 4-mil clear handles most of them. It covers warehouse equipment, machinery, construction materials and skids, replaces expensive drop cloths, and the giant sheeting makes an ideal cover for lumber, walls and scaffolding. It may also be used to cover walls as a moisture barrier, and it’s great for multi-purpose use on construction sites such as covering lumber.

The list of practical applications runs long. This polyethylene film can be used under wood floors, as a barrier against overspray, vapor, moisture and airborne particles, for equipment cover, protection between drywall and insulation, to cover a crawl space, for weed protection in agriculture, to winterize windows, as shielding for curing concrete, and a variety of other DIY projects. Window winterizing and crawl-space moisture control are the seasonal ones most homeowners in this part of the country will run into.

On vapor barriers: construction-grade poly can be used as a vapor barrier. In a heating-dominated climate, the interior side of the assembly is the correct placement for that retarder. But before you treat any standard film as a permanent vapor retarder, confirm it meets local code — construction-grade poly isn’t always a certified product for that purpose.

Choosing the Right Roll Size

Poly is sold width by length, and picking the right width is about minimizing seams. Every seam is a place a moisture or debris barrier can fail. Wider rolls cover large jobs with fewer overlaps. Narrower rolls suit small projects and cut down on waste you’ll never use.

Installation and Sealing Basics

A poly barrier only works if the seams and edges hold. This is where DIY jobs usually fall apart. Start by unrolling and cutting to size with a utility knife. Secure the sheeting with construction-grade tape or the right fasteners for the surface. The film is not perforated, and economy duct tape is recommended for taping sheets together.

When you overlap sheets, give yourself enough margin and seal the seam with duct or seam tape so the barrier stays continuous. Skimp on the overlap and you’ve built a barrier with gaps in it. And the rule worth repeating: verify local building codes before using poly as a permanent vapor retarder, because standard construction-grade film may not be a certified vapor barrier.
