White wood isn’t one species. It’s a generic classification for pale, affordable softwoods like spruce, pine, or fir, often sold collectively as SPF. That confuses a lot of buyers who think they’re getting a specific wood. They’re not. They’re getting whatever pale softwood fits the spruce-pine-fir bucket, and that’s fine for most framing.

Here’s what trips people up first. A 2x6 isn’t 2 inches by 6 inches. While nominally 2 inches by 6 inches, its actual dimensions are 1.5 inches by 5.5 inches due to the milling and kiln-drying processes. The nominal measurement was done before smoothing the surface, whereas the actual dimension measures after the planing process is 1.5 inches by 5.5 inches. Lay out a wall like it’s actually 6 inches deep and you’ll be chasing mistakes all day. Account for that 1.5-inch thickness on every layout.

For weight planning, figure on average it weighs 2 pounds per foot, varying based on the type of lumber and the moisture content.

The thing to understand about white wood: it soaks up water. All grades of whitewood lumber rot easily, so it takes a lot of maintenance to keep objects made from this material in good condition for decades. In Montana, where freeze-thaw and snow are a fact of life, that means untreated white wood has to stay dry. Any ground contact or exposed deck use needs pressure treatment. No exceptions.

Grades, Sizes, and Treatment

Grade drives both how it looks and what it’ll carry. The standard workhorse is No. 2. No. 2 grade is the standard for general framing. Move up the scale when the wood shows or the load climbs — Select Structural or No. 1 grades are best for visible or high-load applications.

Below No. 2, you’re into common-grade territory. Common grade is standard lumber with visible knots, grain irregularities, and minor imperfections — ideal for structural or hidden applications. It’s affordable, widely available, and carries sufficient strength for non-cosmetic uses, but you won’t want it where it shows. It’s best for attics, basements, utility framing, and other non-finished spaces.

For walls, stud-grade is the call. Specifically graded for vertical wall framing, these studs are straighter and more consistent than common-grade lumber.

One point worth hammering home: treatment isn’t a grade. Pressure-treated isn’t a grade, it’s a process. The lumber is placed in a vacuum chamber, and preservative chemicals are forced deep into the wood fibers. This shields it from rot and insects, adding decades to its life in ground contact. Anything touching dirt or living outside gets treated. Period.

On moisture content, know the difference between dry and green stock. Kiln-dried is the preferred indoor choice to minimize warping. Whitewood typically runs around 25% moisture content, while kiln-dried framing is held to 19% or less. Green wood’s a gamble — it shrinks and twists as it dries.

Applications and Spans

The 2x6 earns its keep because it goes nearly everywhere. A 2x6 is one of the most widely used dimensional wood sizes in residential and light commercial construction, used in various structural and support roles across building projects. Wall framing, floor joists, rafters, headers, shelving, concrete forms, scaffold planking — the list runs long.

Space framing members the standard way. When framing, space members 16 or 24 inches on-center and always account for the 1.5-inch actual thickness during layout.

For deck joists, mind the span. A 2x6 works for deck joists with a maximum allowable span of 10 feet at 12-inch centers, 9 feet at 16-inch centers, and 7.5 feet at 24-inch centers. Decking boards themselves run differently — 2x6 is suited for ground-level decking at 12 inches center to center.

Rafters are where Montana snow load matters. A 2x6 works for rafters on a 3/12 pitched roof or shed. For sheds that won’t see heavy wind or snow load, 2x4 rafters can span up to 20 feet, but for sheds that will experience heavy wind or snow load over the same distance, use 2x6 rafters. When the white stuff stacks up, step up to the 2x6. That’s not a preference — it’s the safe call under load.

For concrete work, the 2x6 holds its shape. 2x6 lumber is strong enough to withstand the pressure of poured concrete, though it’ll need bracing and alignment, and it can warp if left wet long term.

Why 2x6 Walls Win in a Cold Climate

This is the big one for Montana heating loads. The deeper cavity holds more insulation. Using 2x6 lumber allows more construction space and better insulation in exterior walls, which can lead to reduced utility bills. Stud-grade 2x6 walls open up room for R-19 to R-21 insulation.

There’s structural payoff too. In addition to a deeper cavity that provides space for more insulation, 2x6 studs have significantly higher compression and bending capacity that allow for increased stud spacing and reduced number of jack and king studs at openings. Using fewer studs per length of wall leads to a reduced framing factor — leaving more room for insulation — plus material cost savings, resource efficiency, and labor savings.

Wider spacing is on the table with advanced framing. The 2x6 advanced framing approach uses studs spaced either 16 or 24 inches on center, and these walls have been used with various approaches to insulation, air sealing, and moisture control as far north as Alaska with a long history of successful performance. That guidance aligns with the 2012/2015 International Residential Codes, with the primary application in IRC Climate Zones 3-5. If a 2x6 wall holds up in Alaska, it’ll handle a Montana winter.

Installation and Fastening

Keep connections simple and rated. For framing, use 16d nails or structural screws.

Decking with 2x6 calls for deck screws — standard deck screws in 1-1/2, 2-1/2, or 3 inch lengths depending on what you’re fastening through.

For reinforcing ceiling joists, there are two proven methods. Use 6 of 10d nails with plywood gussets, or 6 of 16d nails with 2x4s, half into each 2x6 joist. That’s traditional nailing for the capacity of the ties, and it keeps the gussets from twisting.

Last thing — and it’s the thing that kills white wood early if you skip it. Seal it for any damp or exterior use. Whitewood soaks up water and paint quickly, so applying a finish or a layer of paint is necessary to slow down the decaying process. The material can withstand moderate exposure to rain or snow, but if it gets soaked it may start to warp and crack as the water evaporates. Get the finish on before the weather finds it.
