How to Pick the Right Width and Know When to Step Up

It’s a quality low-density film — heavy-duty, opaque plastic sheeting used in construction, masonry, and remodeling. The “6 mil” is the spec that matters: six thousandths of an inch thick. That number tells you whether the sheet does its job or fails when you need it.
The black color isn’t cosmetic. Made from heavy-duty, opaque low-density polyethylene (LDPE), this durable sheeting shields against dust, dirt, debris, and moisture while keeping contents hidden from view. For anything sitting outdoors, the dark film earns its keep — sun-resistant black outperforms clear in outdoor applications.
Most of what you’ll find on the rack is commodity LDPE, not a branded engineered membrane. Standard rolls are construction-grade film and meet ASTM D2103 and ASTM D4397. Cutting it is simple — supplied on a continuous roll, you can easily cut it to size for custom coverage with a utility knife or scissors.

The wider the roll, the fewer seams you tape. That’s the whole decision. A crawl space floor you can span in one piece beats two narrow sheets lapped and sealed down the middle. Pick the width that covers your area in a single run where you can, and you cut the work — and the failure points — in half.
For reference, the broader poly market runs wider still. Common widths include 8’, 10’, 12’, 20’, and 24’ on 100-foot rolls, and some suppliers push out to 16’, 24’, 32’, 40’, and 50’ widths.
The same roll handles two very different jobs, and you should know which one you’re buying for.
As a permanent moisture barrier, poly goes where ground water and condensation cause trouble. Used as a vapor barrier, it protects homes and buildings from moisture, dampness, and condensation — working for crawl spaces, underlayment for concrete slabs or laminate flooring, and interior or exterior walls. In Montana crawl spaces, that ground-moisture barrier is what stands between damp soil and mold, mildew, and rot under the floor. It’s fully waterproof, making it ideal for creating moisture barriers both indoors and outdoors.
The flooring application is everyday work. It’s ideal as a vapor barrier between a concrete subfloor and new flooring.
Then there’s temporary protection — the other half of the job. Black poly makes a great covering for equipment and machinery to protect from moisture, dirt, and dust. Sheeting conceals as it protects. Great for multi-purpose use on construction sites such as covering lumber. On framing jobs where rain and snow show up uninvited, that’s how you keep a lumber stack dry. The same film does demolition duty too — create partitions or barriers to control dust during renovations, sanding, or demolition, and build temporary enclosures or storm windows and doors to protect building materials stored outdoors.
Here’s the single most useful thing to know before you buy. Poly-grade 6 mil is full-weight sheeting, and the 6 mil thickness provides moderate protection for interior or exterior jobs. It’s the floor — the minimum threshold for many code-compliant vapor barriers. For a covered crawl space where nobody’s walking on the plastic, 6 mil does the job.
But “minimum” is the word to sit with. If anything’s going to land on top of the barrier — foot traffic, stored material, a slab pour over rocky fill — step up. Under-slab work and high-traffic areas call for 10 mil or heavier. For the worst conditions, reinforced “scrim” poly — a laminated film with an internal cord grid — resists the tears and punctures that gravel and boots inflict on plain film.
Two Montana-specific cautions:
UV exposure. Most construction-grade 6 mil is not built for the sun. Standard LDPE film is not UV treated. Leave it on a lumber pile through a high-altitude Montana summer and untreated film gets brittle and breaks down. For anything staying outside long-term, choose a product specifically rated with UV stabilizers. Some manufacturers do build it in — one option is made with UV protection for extended life under the sun, containing a UV inhibitor rated for 200 UV hours. Know which you’re buying.
Tear strength matters in the cold. Thickness is your insurance against failure. Heavier USA-made sheeting can carry up to 50% more tear strength than thinner 3 mil imported film — meaning your sheeting won’t fail on you when you need it most. In Montana winters, where standard film turns brittle in deep cold, that margin is the difference between a barrier that holds and one that shatters.
One rule applies no matter the thickness: always verify local building codes regarding required thickness and installation methods for vapor barriers.

Clear the ground first. Sharp debris is the enemy of any poly sheet — sweep out rocks and protruding nails before you roll anything out. Then lap your seams. Overlap seams by several inches and seal them with construction-grade tape. Economy duct tape is commonly recommended for taping sheets together. In crawl space and flooring work, run the barrier a few inches up the walls so ground moisture has nowhere to sneak past the edges. Trim to fit with a pair of scissors or a utility knife once it’s positioned.
