Poly sheeting is the thin plastic film a crew reaches for when something needs to stay dry, clean, or dust-free. It’s a low cost, effective way to keep equipment, inventory, and goods safe and secure from moisture, environmental elements, and dust, available in clear and black across many sizes and gauges. For the light-duty range — 1, 2, and 3 mil — the decision comes down to one number: thickness. Get that right and you don’t overspend on a roll heavier than the job needs, and you don’t waste material that tears the first time the wind catches it.
Mil is the spec that matters. A mil is one-thousandth of an inch (0.001 inch). In metric measurement, 1 mil equals 0.0254 millimeters. The larger the mil number, the thicker and stronger the material. For a sense of scale, a human hair is about 1-2 mil thick. So 1-3 mil film is genuinely thin — and that’s the point. It’s built for temporary protection, not permanent barriers.
Here’s the honest rule on overbuying: poly sheeting is available in a wide range of thicknesses because each application has different durability, strength, and flexibility requirements. Thinner sheets (1-2 mil) are lightweight, cost-effective, and best for short-term use. Going heavier than the task demands costs more and gives up flexibility. Choosing the wrong thickness may lead to wasted costs if you overbuy or damaged goods if you underbuy.

One thing to be clear about: 1-3 mil film is temporary protection, not a code-grade vapor barrier. Thinner sheeting (1-2 mils) might be suitable for light-duty applications like covering furniture during painting, while medium thickness (4-6 mils) is suitable for more robust applications like vapor barriers. True under-slab and wall vapor barriers run thicker. Use the light gauges for what they’re good at and don’t ask them to do a 6 mil job.
The thin stuff earns its keep as a drop-cloth replacement and a quick cover. Sheeting is an economical alternative to drop cloths, may also be used to cover walls as a moisture barrier, and is great for multi-purpose use on construction sites such as covering lumber. Clear poly makes a great covering for equipment and machinery to protect from moisture, dirt and dust.
That lumber-cover use matters here. In Montana, stacked lumber and building materials sitting on site before install need to stay dry through rain and snow — a clear poly cover buys time without much cost. A six mil reinforced film can be considered heavy duty when it’s used to cover a desk to keep it clear of dust — meaning duty rating is always about the job, not the number alone. For short-term cover over a lumber stack or a tool pile, the light gauges do the work.
The 3 mil tier stretches further into active construction tasks. It’s ideal for covering equipment, materials, and machinery, and is commonly used for temporary walls, weatherproofing, scaffolding, and general protection in construction, painting, plastering, and foam spraying applications. It’s lightweight, economical protective sheeting for indoor and outdoor use that shields against dust, dirt, and debris, and is easy to handle, cut, and secure.
Clear poly also pulls double duty as a temporary window or wall cover during cold-weather renovation work, blocking wind and dust while still letting light through. That brings up the color choice. Clear lets light pass — useful for temporary covers and greenhouse-style work. Black blocks it. The light-gauge poly that Western Building Center carries comes in both: clear film in 1.5, 2, and 3 mil, plus black in 3 mil, in sizes from a 3-by-50 roll up to 8.33-by-200 widths.
Most of this film is the same base material. Poly sheeting is generally categorized as a plastic #4 (LDPE — Low-Density Polyethylene) and can be recycled where facilities exist. Some all-purpose lines blend it: a proprietary blend of low and linear low-density polyethylene with calcium carbonate and recycled content. Worth knowing — sheeting with additives or coatings may not be recyclable, and local recycling programs should be checked.
Light-gauge poly is sold by roll in a range of widths and lengths. It’s usually sold in rolls and available in various thicknesses, measured in mils, and widths. Common runs come in 100’ and 200’ lengths, with widths from around 3’ up to 20’+. To estimate roll weight before you order, use the formula: Width (inches) × Length (feet) × Gauge (mil) / 2500. For example, a 20’ × 100’ 4 mil roll works out to 240” × 100’ × 4 / 2500 = 38.4 lbs per roll.
Getting coverage right is mostly about overlap and securing edges. Overlap adjoining sheets by 6 to 12 inches so there are no gaps, then hold the edges down with tape or tacks. In any enclosed space, keep some ventilation going so moisture doesn’t build up behind the film and defeat the purpose.
The sun is the real enemy of thin clear poly. If the film is in the sun, it needs UV protection additives to maintain its strength. Standard 1-3 mil clear film degrades fast under Montana’s high-elevation UV — for anything left exposed outdoors, reach for UV-resistant film. UV-resistant poly sheeting is available for applications with prolonged exposure to sunlight, which can prolong the life of the sheeting.
For storage, keep rolls cool and shaded. Store at temperatures less than 120°F and avoid storage in direct sunlight.
