Black iron pipe is the workhorse for running natural gas, propane, fire sprinkler lines, and steam. Despite the name, it isn’t iron at all — it’s hot-rolled carbon steel that carries a black surface, known as mill scale, as a result of the manufacturing process. Carbon steel exposed to the hot rolling mill at temperatures over 1,700°F (927°C) reacts with oxygen in the air, forming a layer of magnetite on the steel surface that gives the finished product its dark color. That’s all the “black” means. It’s a surface condition, not a different metal.

Here’s the part that trips people up at the counter: “black steel pipe,” “black iron pipe,” and “black carbon steel pipe” are all references to the same pipe in the piping industry. “Black iron” is a common, popular, and inaccurate nickname — you aren’t actually buying iron, but black carbon steel. Don’t lose sleep over the terminology. Focus on the application.

The single most important decision is matching the pipe to the job. Unlike galvanized pipe, black pipe lacks a protective zinc coating. This absence makes it unsuitable for carrying potable water, as it would rust from the inside and contaminate the water supply. Its primary domain is the transport of fluids where slight internal corrosion is not a concern, such as natural gas, propane, steam, or fire sprinkler systems. Get that match wrong and you’re looking at corrosion, leaks, or a code violation.

Where It Belongs — and Where It Doesn’t

Black pipe earns its keep on fuel lines. The steel gives the pipe and its fittings more strength than copper, aluminum, or PVC counterparts, and it’s commonly used to transport gas — the extra strength is what keeps potentially deadly gas from leaking throughout a home. That matters across rural Montana, where propane is the standard fuel for properties off the natural-gas grid. Black pipe is the code-approved choice for both natural gas and propane fuel lines.

It also shows up in fire protection and high-heat work. The standard application areas run to gas distribution, fire protection, and steam/HVAC. Fire sprinkler systems, natural gas transmission, HVAC, and residential and industrial construction are all common uses.

Temperature is where this pipe genuinely shines. While black iron is a low-pressure pipe, the temperature rating is where the metal really shines — it can withstand temperatures of over 538°C. That heat tolerance is exactly why zinc-coated pipe gets avoided on high-heat lines.

Now the hard no’s. Black iron pipe is very susceptible to corrosion. Used for water pipes, it rusts both inside and out, and over time particles from internal rust seep into the fluids it transports. Skip it for potable water.

Outdoor and buried runs need a second thought. Montana buyers running lines to a grill, fire pit, or generator are exposing bare steel to moisture. Galvanized and black iron pipes are not interchangeable — black pipe requires an outer coating for maintenance and corrosion resistance. For exposed or buried service, plan for a professional anti-corrosion coating, or use galvanized instead of bare black pipe.

Schedules, Grades, and Fittings

Wall thickness is described by schedule, and you size it to your pressure. Black iron, also referred to as schedule 40 steel or schedule 40 black pipe, is a durable material that withstands high temperatures and pressures, with a maximum pressure of 700 psi. Schedule 40 covers general construction and most gas work. Step up to thicker-walled pipe for high-pressure or steam service.

Grade tells you the strength. ASTM A53 offers two grades — Grade A and Grade B — with Grade B being the better-specified pipe because its strength value is higher. Here’s how they compare:

For pressure calculations using Barlow’s formula, always use the minimum wall thickness to compensate for manufacturing tolerance. For high-temperature service specifically, the standard shifts to ASTM A106.

Black pipe is a threaded pipe-and-fitting system, and the fittings have their own logic. For black pipe, joints are most often made from malleable cast iron. Malleable iron begins as a brittle cast iron, then goes through a prolonged heat treatment — an annealing process that transforms it into a material with strength plus a degree of ductility. This means the fitting can withstand the compressive forces of being tightened onto a pipe’s threads without cracking. Malleable iron fittings are made for light industrial and plumbing use up to 300 psi.

The fittings catalog covers every move you’ll need to make. Malleable cast iron fittings — elbows, tees, couplings, unions, nipples, caps, plugs — are the primary means of connection, each serving a distinct purpose, from changing direction to branching lines or terminating a run. A word on nipples, since the names confuse people. A pipe nipple is a length of straight pipe with male threads on both ends. A close nipple has no bare, unthreaded pipe between the two connecting ends — the connected fittings come very close to touching. A hex nipple has a hexagonal section in the middle that works like a nut, so you can grip it with a wrench and tighten or loosen it much more easily than a rounded pipe.

The connection itself relies on tapered threads. The most common method to connect black pipe relies on tapered threads, and in North America the standard is the National Pipe Thread (NPT). As you screw the male and female threads together, the tapered design causes them to wedge against each other and deform slightly, creating a mechanical lock. But the threads alone do not create the seal — the seal is formed by a thread sealant filling the microscopic voids between the threads.

Making a Leak-Proof Joint

Threads don’t seal themselves. Without a sealant, a threaded pipe joint would almost certainly leak under pressure. Two options do the work: PTFE tape (commonly called Teflon tape), a simple way to seal joints without making a mess, which can withstand temperatures up to 260°C; or pipe sealant, also known as joint compound or “pipe dope,” a liquid that oozes between threads, lubricating while it fills in microscopic imperfections — though it can be messier than tape.

The two-wrench technique isn’t optional on a real assembly. One wrench acts as a backup, holding the fitting or connected pipe section stationary, while the second applies the turning force to the piece being installed. Skip the backup wrench and you’ll torque a joint you already made tight somewhere else down the line.

For tightening, achieving a secure seal requires tightening the components a specified number of turns past hand-tight engagement — roughly one to two full turns past hand-tight. Then test every joint. On gas work especially, adherence to established standards, such as those from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), governs fitting dimensions and material properties to ensure system safety and reliability. Follow local code, verify the joints, and don’t guess — a gas leak is a safety hazard, not a callback.
