How to Choose the Right One for Gas, Heat, and Structural Work

Here’s the one rule that matters more than anything else in this guide: black iron is the standard for gas and propane, and it should never carry potable water. Get the material matched to the medium and most of the rest is straightforward.
For Montana, that’s a relevant distinction. Propane runs a lot of rural homes here, and hydronic and boiler heat is common in cold-climate builds. Black iron lives in both of those worlds. It just needs to stay dry.
Black steel nipples are typically used as a component in plumbing and pipe systems. They’re essentially short lengths of black steel pipe with thread at both ends, allowing them to be screwed into other fittings or pipes to create a secure connection — often used in gas, oil, and water applications because they’re durable and resistant to corrosion. They’re commonly used in residential and commercial plumbing, heating systems, and in the oil and gas industry, and can also be used for structural applications such as construction of supports, frames, and railing systems.
Black iron earns its keep where strength and heat matter. It’s ideal for high-pressure and high-temperature applications, and offers better performance in fire protection systems. That’s why it shows up in fire sprinkler, HVAC, and other low-pressure plumbing applications, alongside gas and propane runs.
The reason buyers reach for nipples instead of cutting pipe: nipples come pre-cut and pre-threaded, unlike black iron pipe, which must be cut and threaded for each joint. This makes black iron nipples an extremely convenient and time-saving piece of hardware. They handle the close work — connecting two fittings that are close to each other. The matching fittings round out the system: elbows, tees, unions, couplings, reducing couplings, and bushings, all in the same black malleable iron.
The standards behind the part: ASTM A53 for material, ASTM A733 for dimensions, and ANSI B1.20.1 for pipe threads. ASTM A733 covers welded and seamless carbon steel pipe nipples, black and hot-dip galvanized, plus austenitic stainless steel nipples, in sizes from 1/8 inch to 12 inch and in standard or special lengths. Standardized component, not a random accessory.
Two numbers describe a nipple: the nominal pipe size (the diameter) and the length. Pipe nipples run from 1/8 inch to 12 inch, with common wall classes like SCH 40 and SCH 80. One caution on sizing — NPS is a standardized label, not a literal measurement of the bore, so verify with calipers rather than eyeballing it.
On schedule: Schedule 40 is the standard for gas work and most DIY runs. Schedule 80 has the heavier wall for high-pressure steam or industrial duty. For a typical propane drop or heating connection, Schedule 40 is the answer.
Lengths run from “close” all the way out. A close nipple is the shortest there is — minimal thread land, the two threaded ends nearly meeting in the middle. They save space in tight assemblies, but the trade-off is real: little wrench land and a harder time backing it out down the road. Leave yourself fit-up margin when you can.

That spread of 1/2” and 3/4” sizes lines up with where most residential gas and propane connections land.

Black steel is the standard for gas piping. Galvanized is the opposite story: galvanized steel is not recommended for gas lines because zinc can react with certain gases, leading to corrosion and potential leaks.
Flip it for water. Black steel isn’t recommended for water supply — it rusts quickly when exposed to water, leading to contamination and pipe failure. Use galvanized or stainless steel instead. Galvanized can last 20–50 years depending on the environment, thanks to zinc’s corrosion resistance.
The practical guidance: choose black steel if you need high-pressure resistance for gas, steam, or hydraulic systems, the application is indoors or in dry environments, and cost is a factor. Choose galvanized if the pipe will be exposed to water, moisture, or outdoor weather, you need long-term corrosion resistance, or the application involves drinking water.
One Montana note worth holding onto: bare carbon steel and wet environments are not best friends. Once moisture sits there, corrosion starts working. So if the line lives outside or in a damp room, black steel can become callback material fast. Indoor heating and gas runs are the right home for it. If you’ve got a damp mechanical room or an exposed run, applying a rust-resistant paint or epoxy coating can extend their lifespan in humid conditions.
Black iron uses NPT tapered threads, and the seal is everything — especially on gas. Apply PTFE tape or pipe dope to the male threads only, wrapping clockwise so it doesn’t unravel when you thread the joint. Hand-tighten first, then bring it home with one to two turns of a pipe wrench.
Don’t go gorilla on it. Over-tightening can crack the malleable iron fitting, and a cracked fitting on a gas line is a problem you don’t want to find later. Snug and sealed beats bottomed-out and stressed.
Nipples sit in the joint. That means they sit where leaks start, where vibration shows up first, and where bad thread matching turns a clean install into rework. If the nipple is off on thread, length, or schedule, the install crew starts fighting the spool — then you get cross-threading, drip points, wrench damage, or a bad handover. Match the threads, match the schedule, leave a little length margin, and the joint runs quiet for years.
