They’re malleable or ductile cast iron components used to connect, branch, or change the direction of piping in non-potable systems like natural gas, oil, steam, and fire suppression. If you’re running a gas line to a furnace, a propane drop to a shop heater, or a sprinkler main, these are the fittings that thread onto the pipe and turn the corners.
First thing to clear up: the “black” isn’t the metal. The black finish is a protective oxide or phosphate coating, not the metal itself. Underneath that coating is malleable iron. Malleable iron pipe fittings are created through a special annealing heat treatment process that transforms white cast iron into malleable iron. This process reduces brittleness and enhances workability and ductility, which makes malleable iron ideal for applications requiring flexibility and strength. That toughness matters — malleable iron’s ability to withstand high stress without failing makes it a reliable material for critical infrastructure.
Worth understanding the naming. A “black pipe” system pairs black steel pipe for the straight runs with malleable iron fittings — the elbows, tees, and unions. The fittings are what most people mean when they say “black iron.” The standards behind them include ASTM A197 for the castings and NPT threads for the connections.
The shape family is wide. You’ll find elbows, nipples, floor flanges, caps, tees, couplings, unions, reducers, plugs, and hex bushings in a range of sizes. Sizes typically run from 1/8” up to 6” for most fittings, though specifics vary by type.
Western Building Center carries a working set of elbows for the common residential sizes: 90-degree black iron elbows in 3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4”, and 1”; a 3/4” 45-degree elbow; street elbows in 1/2” and 3/4”; and a 3/4” x 1/2” reducing 90.
Know the difference between a standard elbow and a street elbow before you order. A standard 90 has two female threaded ends. These elbows have two female-threaded connections, allowing the user to change flow direction in a black iron piping system. A street elbow is male-by-female, which is what you reach for in tight spots. Street elbows are used around existing piping mounted on flat surfaces such as a wall or ceiling.
Two pressure classes cover most work. Class 150 is the everyday fitting. Class 150 pipe fittings are UL Listed and FM Approved at 300 psi. Class 300 — sometimes called Schedule 80 — handles higher pressure. Class 300 pipe fittings are UL Listed. One thing that catches people: smaller fittings handle more pressure than the big ones. Smaller diameters typically handle higher pressures than larger ones.

Those ratings come straight off a manufacturer spec: temperature range -20°F to 350°F, maximum operating pressure 300 psi @ 150°F, with saturated steam at 150 psi @ 350°F. Some 150-lb fittings push higher in the right conditions — one street elbow is rated to work up to 500 PSI at 150°F.
This is the part that keeps systems safe. Black iron is for non-potable, dry-environment work. Black iron pipe is used to transport natural and propane gas in residential applications. It’s also most often used in fire sprinkler systems due to its high heat resistance. Around here, that covers a lot — natural gas and propane feed most Montana homes and shops, and the high heat tolerance makes black iron the standard for commercial sprinkler systems.
In the house, you’ll see it at the appliances. Common residential uses include natural gas lines safely transporting gas within homes, and heating systems connecting boilers and radiators. On the commercial side, it shows up in gas distribution and HVAC connections. Malleable iron ensures a secure, leak-proof connection essential for safely transporting gas, and in HVAC systems these fittings transport both gas and liquids under varying pressure, withstanding the high temperature changes common in those systems.
Where it does not belong: drinking water and anywhere wet. The black oxide coating gives only moderate corrosion protection. Because black iron is prone to rust in moist environments, it is best suited for dry, enclosed, or industrial-controlled settings. When water or outdoor exposure is in the picture, the galvanized version of the same fitting is the move. The black malleable iron fittings are ideal for gas and oil applications, while the galvanized iron fittings are perfect for non-potable water and outdoor use due to their enhanced rust protection.
That dry-only rule lands hard in this climate. The fittings are rated down to -20°F, so an unheated basement, crawlspace, or outbuilding doesn’t bother them. But condensation does. Freeze-thaw cycling and moisture in a crawlspace will rust black iron over time, so keep these runs in dry, enclosed locations.
One more note worth passing along: these products carry a California Prop 65 warning for lead exposure.
Three things decide whether a joint holds: size, class, and threads. Match the pressure and temperature rating to your system first. Then confirm the threads. Always confirm your pipe and fitting threads are compatible, such as NPT, to prevent leaks. NPT is the U.S. standard — mixing NPT and BSPT threads gives you a joint that never quite seals no matter how hard you crank it.
Sealant is on you. These fittings ship bare. They do not include pre-applied thread sealant. Installation only requires thread sealant to create a tight seal. Use proper pipe-thread compound or tape rated for the system — gas-rated for gas.
Watch dissimilar metals. Avoid contact with dissimilar metals to prevent galvanic corrosion. And don’t skip the test. Hydrostatic pressure testing is recommended after assembly to confirm system integrity. Gas work is code-regulated and usually needs a permit and inspection — that’s not optional, and it’s not something to eyeball.
Can black iron fittings be used for drinking water? No. Black iron rusts in moist conditions, so it’s meant for non-potable, dry systems only. Galvanized iron fittings are the choice for non-potable water and outdoor use because of their enhanced rust protection.
