The Right Choice for Gas, Propane, and Oil Lines

They’re made from malleable iron — cast iron put through a specific heat treatment that gives it ductility, making it strong and resilient. The single most important thing a buyer needs to understand: these fittings belong on gas, propane, oil, and air lines. Not water. Black steel fittings can be used for air, gas, or oil. Do not use them for drinking water.
That dark, matte finish throws people off. It’s not paint. The term “black” pipe fitting is something of a misnomer — it doesn’t refer to a coating applied for color. The dark finish is a byproduct of manufacturing. During the high-temperature forging and annealing that gives malleable iron its properties, a layer of dark iron oxide, specifically magnetite (Fe3O4), forms on the surface. This is often called mill scale.
Here’s why that matters for the buyer. That scaly surface offers a minimal degree of corrosion resistance — essentially just enough to prevent flash rusting during storage and transport. It provides no long-term protection against oxidation, especially in the presence of moisture. The fitting’s job isn’t to resist external corrosion. It’s to safely contain substances that aren’t corrosive to iron, like natural gas and certain oils.
For Montana builders, that lines up with the most common use case. Gas and propane heat are everywhere here, and black iron is the appropriate fitting for fuel-gas lines. But moisture is the enemy. Anything outdoor, damp, or freeze-thaw exposed needs galvanized — not black.
This is the call that prevents rust, contamination, and corrosion failures. Get it wrong and you’re looking at rework, not just a returned part.
The rule is short. Use galvanized malleable iron fittings for all water, steam, and outdoor projects. Select black malleable iron fittings exclusively for gas and oil line installations.
Two mistakes will wreck a system. First: never use galvanized fittings for gas lines — the zinc can flake and clog the system. Second: avoid mixing black and galvanized fittings, because it causes accelerated galvanic corrosion. Pick one and stay with it through the whole run.
The cost difference comes down to coating. Galvanization applies a protective zinc coating to iron or steel to prevent rusting — the most common method for pipe fittings being hot-dip galvanization. That extra process is why galvanized runs more. Black is generally less expensive; galvanized is generally more expensive due to the galvanizing process.

A pipe run is never a straight shot. It turns, branches, changes size, and sometimes needs a spot you can open back up. Each fitting has a job. Elbows are used when a line turns. Tees create a branch. Sockets and couplings join straight sections. Caps and plugs close an opening. Bushings and reducers connect different pipe sizes.
The coupling is the workhorse. A coupling (fipt x fipt) connects two pieces of male threaded pipe or fittings. Need to step between sizes? A reducer coupling connects two pieces of male threaded pipe or fittings of different sizes.
Elbows come in a couple of flavors worth knowing. A 90 degree elbow turns the pipe sharply, while a 45 degree elbow gives a gentler change of direction. A street elbow swaps one female end for a male, letting you thread straight into another fitting.
Don’t skip the union. A union allows easier separation of a pipe section — often chosen near valves, pumps, meters, or other points where future access may be useful. Put one in where you’ll want to break the line later without tearing the whole system apart.

Match the rating to the system before you buy. Black iron — also called schedule 40 steel or schedule 40 black pipe — is a durable material that withstands high temperatures and pressures, with a maximum of 700 psi. For everyday work, standard black iron fittings are typically Class 150 NPT-sized.
If a job pushes harder, the pressure classes climb. Low-pressure iron and steel fittings handle up to 300 psi; high-pressure versions are built for up to 6,000 psi, with industrial extremes going higher still.
Threads are where assemblies leak when nobody checks. In North America that’s NPT, but verify it. BSPT and NPT may look similar at a glance, but they’re not the same — the angle, taper, and sealing behavior differ, which is why thread choice matters before a fitting is used. The clean method, straight from the catalog: measure your pipe and fittings to identify pipe size, thread size, schedule, and thread type, then find compatible components.
The technique isn’t complicated, but on a gas line it isn’t optional either.
Start clean, then seal. Clean the threads, apply a thread sealant like PTFE tape or pipe joint compound, hand-tighten, then use two pipe wrenches — one to turn and one as backup — to reach a secure, leak-proof seal.
Don’t put the line into service on faith. Always perform a pressure test, such as a hydrostatic test, to verify system integrity before full deployment.

Can black iron fittings be used for water lines? No. Black malleable iron fittings rust when exposed to water and are unsafe for potable water due to rust. Use galvanized fittings — they carry a hot-dipped zinc coating that’s safe for potable water — for water lines instead.
Why shouldn’t galvanized fittings go on gas lines? Zinc from the galvanized coating can flake off and clog the gas system. Black iron is the appropriate choice for gas, propane, and oil.
