How to Tell Two Very Different Products Apart
Building MaterialsHere’s the mistake that gets people hurt. “Galv/black vent pipe” sounds like one thing. It’s two — and they don’t do the same job.
One is factory-built, double-wall gas vent (B-Vent). The other is single-wall galvanized or black steel pipe used for drain-waste-vent runs or gas supply. Grab the wrong one and you’ve got a safety problem, not just a return trip to the counter. Before buying anything, figure out which job you’re doing: venting a gas appliance, venting a drain system, or running gas to a furnace.
Type B gas vent (B-Vent). This is the one most people mean when they say “gas vent.” B-Vent is a factory-built, double-wall pipe designed for venting Category I natural draft gas appliances, with an aluminum inner liner for rapid warm-up and draft efficiency and a galvanized steel outer casing. That double-wall design is the whole point — it keeps the flue gases moving and the outer surface cooler.
Black iron/steel pipe. Different animal entirely. Black iron or steel pipe is used for gas supply lines and is not interchangeable with vent pipe. It carries gas to the appliance. It does not vent combustion products away from it.
Galvanized steel pipe. Galvanized steel piping was originally introduced as an alternative to lead pipe. It was generally used for drain, waste, and vent piping before the 1980s. Now, galvanized steel is common in gas piping. Galvanized pipe has threaded connections that make it easy to connect.
So the same words cover a gas-venting product, a DWV material, and a gas-supply material. Match the product to the function. Don’t shortcut this.
Round is the standard for gas vent. Oval sections are available for tight wall-stud spaces. That oval option matters when you’re threading vent through a 2x4 wall and round won’t clear.
On the gas-vent side, the market runs common diameters in standard stick lengths, and B-Vent typically joins with twist-lock connections. Install using twist-lock or secure joints per manufacturer instructions; while typically self-securing, local codes may allow or require fasteners, but never penetrate the inner flue when using screws.
For galvanized pipe and fittings, Western Building Center carries a range of diameters and connectors. Sizes run 3, 4, 6, and 8-inch in 24-inch sections (30-gauge), with heavier 26-gauge in the larger adjustable elbows.

On the plumbing DWV side, the rooftop vent is the small pipe you see sticking up. The main vent stack usually exits through the roof and looks like a short, vertical pipe about 2 to 4 inches in diameter. It may be metal, PVC, or ABS, depending on your plumbing system.
If you’re venting a drain system, sizing isn’t guesswork. The base rule is straightforward. The vent must be at least one-half the diameter of the drain served, but in no case less than 1¼ inches in diameter.
Run the common ones from there. If the drain size is 4 inches, a 2-inch vent is required. A 3-inch drain would require a 1½-inch vent. A 2-inch, 1½-inch or 1¼-inch drain would require a minimum 1¼-inch vent, this being the minimum size allowed.
One more rule that catches people on long runs. Vents exceeding 40 feet in developed length shall be increased by one nominal pipe size for the entire developed length of the vent pipe. Measure the run before you settle on a diameter.
For gas vent, the sizing logic is different — choose B-Vent by matching the required diameters and connection styles specified in your appliance manual and NFPA 54 standards. The appliance manual is the boss here, not a rule of thumb.
The safety-critical part of a gas vent isn’t the pipe — it’s what surrounds it and what caps it. Ensure the system includes necessary firestops, roof flashings, and a listed cap to prevent debris and backdrafts. And the rule nobody should ignore: always maintain the required clearance to combustible materials.
That listed cap earns its keep in Montana. Roof-vent snow buildup and debris are real here, and a blocked terminus causes trouble. If the vent is blocked by leaves, snow, or debris, issues may appear even if the pipe is present. In some cases, a blocked vent can cause toilet water levels to drop or bubbles to rise in nearby fixtures.
If you’re leaving any old galvanized vent section in place during a remodel, support it properly. Leaving the galvanized at the top of the vent is generally OK — just make sure it is well braced and supported before you cut out the stuff below. You don’t want it falling down or moving and causing a leak where it goes through the roof.
Plenty of older Montana homes have galvanized DWV and vent stacks. The question is always: what stays, what goes?
The answer splits along vent versus drain. Keeping the galvanized for the vent should be fine, but replace any galvanized drain pipe with ABS or PVC. It’s likely all blocked up with gunk and crud — worth the replacement. Horizontal drain runs are the worst offenders. Any drain or vent lines that see waste or water really should be replaced — the horizontal runs especially, as they love to rust out along the bottom.
Tying new plastic into old metal is routine. There are ABS/PVC fittings to join it to most any other kind of pipe. Connecting to galvanized is easy — the hard part will be getting the old galv fittings off. Don’t fight the old threads. Take a Sawzall to the vent pipe, then connect into your new ABS with a Fernco coupler.
As for which plastic: ABS is a black plastic pipe mainly used for drain, waste, and vent piping. It can be used both indoors and outdoors, is lightweight, and is joined using a one-step cement. ABS has a property that matters in a freeze-thaw climate — it can withstand cold temperatures. PVC is the more versatile of the two. PVC pipes can be used indoors, outdoors, and underground, and can provide water supply or be used for drain and vent piping. PVC does have a connection step ABS doesn’t — it requires two steps to make a connection, primer and cement.
Can I use galvanized vent pipe to vent my gas furnace? No — not single-wall galvanized. Venting a Category I natural draft gas appliance calls for B-Vent. B-Vent is a factory-built, double-wall pipe with an aluminum inner liner for draft efficiency and a galvanized steel outer casing. The single-wall galvanized stuff is a different product for different jobs.

My old galvanized vent stack is still solid — do I have to replace it? Not necessarily. Keeping the galvanized for the vent should be fine, but replace any galvanized drain pipe with ABS or PVC. If you cut out sections below it, make sure the remaining pipe is well braced and supported so it doesn’t move and cause a leak where it goes through the roof.
Can I connect new ABS to existing galvanized? Yes. There are fittings to join ABS or PVC to most any other kind of pipe — cut the old pipe and connect into the new ABS with a Fernco coupler.
Why does my drain gurgle? Often a venting issue. As water travels down the drain it creates negative pressure behind it; without proper ventilation, that suction can pull water from nearby traps and cause slow drainage or gurgling. A blocked rooftop terminus — snow, leaves, debris — does the same thing even when the pipe itself is intact.
