A Buyer's Guide to Types, Setup, and Safety

Here’s the decision that trips up most painters, siding crews, and weekend remodelers: when does a ladder stop cutting it and you need to step up to a scaffold? The honest answer comes down to four things — terrain, height, load capacity, and project duration.

Ladders win for short, low-risk jobs where you don’t need both hands free and you’re not standing in one spot long. The minute you’re working a wall section for hours, hauling tools up with you, or stretching across an uneven yard, a scaffold earns its keep. While you can always use a ladder, scaffolding has several advantages. The most important advantage is safety. Scaffolding is less likely to tip over, it creates a working platform for you to stand on, and often comes with guardrail options. And it’s not just about not falling. Having a work platform also makes you more efficient. You can have your paint and tools next to you on the platform while you work and the platform allows you to complete a larger portion of the wall or ceiling before needing to move the scaffolding.

The cost argument that scares people off is mostly myth. All of the scaffold options listed below are also cost competitive with using a ladder.

The Scaffold Types and How They Differ

Four platform systems cover almost everything a homeowner or small contractor runs into. They differ mainly in how high they reach, how much they weigh, and whether they can handle ground that isn’t flat.

Baker/Perry (utility) scaffold. The workhorse. This kind of scaffolding goes by several different names such as Baker and Perry Scaffolding, Utility Scaffolding and more. It consists of two ladder frames that are joined in the middle by a work platform. The ladder frames are 6’ high and 29” wide. The work platform is adjustable up and down the ladder frames and the unit comes with locking wheels so it can be easily moved. The scaffolding units are stackable so that you can paint higher up the wall or ceiling. The feature that matters most on a Montana lot: the platform on this scaffolding can be adjusted on each frame independently, allowing you to set this scaffolding up to paint over stairs and other uneven surfaces. The trade-off is weight — each unit weighs 150 lbs, and assembly can be a little difficult with one person.

A-frame (folding trestle) scaffold. The light, fast option. A-Frame Scaffolding is also called Folding Trestle Scaffolding. It consist of two folding frames that are put into place, unfolded and then a working platform is put on top. These frames can be purchased in several different heights, such as 3ft, 4ft and 6ft and they contain ladder rungs to give you several platform height options. A-Frame scaffolding is very light, it is the fastest and most simple of all scaffolding to set up and you can create a platform as long or narrow as you need. Platform planks come in wood or aluminum boards — aluminum boards that range from 7’ all the way to 24’ long. Where it falls down: platform can only go up to 6’ high and it cannot work on uneven surfaces. Keep this one on flat floors.

Frame scaffold. The strong, configurable one for bigger jobs. Frame scaffolding is two scaffolding frames, connected by cross braces. These frames come in various widths, for instance ranging from 2’ wide to 5’ wide. They are very strong, stackable, and come with lots of accessories so that you can configure them to meet the specific needs of your painting project. For sloped ground, these frames can be used with leveling jacks so that each leg can be adjusted for painting on uneven surfaces. Best for large commercial painting projects. The catch: you must purchase accessories individually.

Ladder jack scaffold. The cheapest entry. Ladder jack scaffolding is simply some angled extensions that hook onto ladders that allow you to use your ladders like scaffold frames and attach a platform between them. You just need to purchase two jacks and a platform. This type of scaffolding allows you to utilize ladders you already have. Built for installing building exteriors, trim, and finishes, and contractors widely use ladder jack scaffolds because of their cost effectiveness, portability, and quick erection and dismantling procedures, as well as their adaptability for use in narrow spaces.

Matching the equipment to the surface

Montana lots are sloped, yards are uneven, and you’re often working over a set of deck or porch stairs. That rules out the A-frame and points you toward the Baker/Perry with its independently adjustable frames, or a frame scaffold set up with leveling jacks. For long, low runs — interior walls, low ceilings — the A-frame with a long aluminum board moves fast and gets a lot done. Tight, narrow spaces favor the ladder jack or the Baker. When you do reach for an extension or straight ladder, make sure that its length allows you to set it up at the required angle, using the 4-to-1 Rule.

Safety Limits You Can’t Negotiate

Falls are the dominant scaffold hazard, and OSHA sets hard numbers that decide what’s even legal at a given height. The ladder jack scaffold has the tightest envelope, so know these cold.

  • Do not use ladder jack scaffolding to support a platform higher than 20 feet (6.1m).
  • Each ladder jack scaffold platform must be at least 12 inches (30 cm) wide.
  • The maximum intended load for a ladder jack scaffold is 25 lb/ft².
  • No more than two workers may occupy a platform at any one time. The maximum span between supports is 8 feet.
  • Employees working above 10 feet (3.1 m) on a ladder jack scaffold must be protected from fall hazards by a personal fall arrest system.

Two rules people get wrong constantly. First: do not paint or plaster scaffold planks, and if paint or plaster is observed, promptly remove the plank from service. Paint hides the cracks and splits that tell you a plank’s about to fail. Second, on the ladders themselves: job-made ladders must not be used to support ladder jack scaffolds.

Before every use, inspect all scaffold components for damage. Verify that all parts are working and ensure that all nuts are tightened. Do not use bent, cracked, damaged or substitute parts. Footing matters as much as the platform — keep ladders on stable and level surfaces, unless secured, to prevent accidental displacement. Ladders must be secured or provided with slip-resistant feet when used on slippery surfaces. And the old OSHA data still stings: only 33 percent of scaffolds were equipped with a guardrail. Don’t be in the other two-thirds.

Keeping Metal Scaffold from Rusting Out

Store gear outdoors through a Montana winter and corrosion isn’t a cosmetic problem — it’s a load problem. The components of scaffolding that are corroded lose their structural integrity over time. Rust undermines load bearing capacity which poses dangers to workers. Coated equipment that’s eaten through gets replaced early, and corroded scaffolding needs premature replacement, reducing the lifespan of asset utilisation by years.

You’ve got two protection routes. Galvanized scaffolding has hot-dip zinc coating which offers great resistance to corrosion. Nevertheless, galvanizing is more expensive initially and damaged places are not easy to repair. Painted protection trades some toughness for flexibility — painted scaffolding uses liquid coatings such as DTM paint for protection. This technique gives flexibility to choice of color and easier touch up repairs. Preliminary expenses are less than galvanizing.

Painted coatings cost less up front and touch up easily. For gear that lives outside through wet, freezing months, the zinc protection of galvanizing earns its premium — but a properly coated and maintained painted frame holds up fine with regular touch-ups.
