How to Build a Safe Plank Platform from Two Ladders

A ladder jack scaffold isn’t one thing you buy off a shelf. It’s three separate purchases that have to work together: two rated ladders, a pair of ladder jacks, and a plank. Triangle-shaped brackets called “ladder jacks” attach to portable ladders, used on each side to form support for a platform. Get any one of those three wrong and you’ve built something that wobbles, sags, or worse.

Who’s this for? Painters, siding crews, trim carpenters. A ladder jack scaffold is a system designed to perform activities such as installing building exteriors, trim, and finishes. Contractors widely use them because of their cost effectiveness, portability, and quick erection and dismantling procedures, as well as their adaptability for use in narrow spaces. The appeal is real — two ladders and a plank cost a fraction of a tower scaffold and pack into a truck.

But know the limits going in. Ladder jack scaffolds are designed to be lightweight and portable, making them easy to transport and set up. They are typically used for tasks that require access to elevated areas for a short duration of time. These scaffolds are not intended for heavy loads or prolonged use, as they do not provide the same level of stability as more permanent scaffolding systems. This is short-duration access, not a place to park a crew all week.

The whole system gets governed by four hard numbers. Build your gear list around them: do not use ladder jack scaffolding to support a platform higher than 20 feet; the maximum intended load is 25 lb/ft²; no more than two workers may occupy a platform at any one time; and the maximum span between supports is 8 feet.

Picking the Jacks and Ladders

Two jack styles exist, and which one you buy depends on how it grips the ladder.

The Side Rail Ladder Jack installs onto the railing and rungs of a pair of extension or single ladders. The planking is then slid into position along the side of the bracket to create a work platform. The other style: Two or Three Rung Bracket Ladder Jacks hook directly onto two or three ladder rungs. With these, planking may be placed on top of the bracket jacks to create a working platform.

Here’s the rule that catches people. The ladder jack must be designed and constructed so that it will bear on the side rails and ladder rungs or on the ladder rungs alone. If bearing on rungs only, the bearing area must include a length of at least 10 inches on each rung.

Material is a straight trade-off. Aluminum jacks are lightweight and rust-resistant, ideal for occasional use. Steel jacks offer superior strength and durability for heavy-duty projects, but their weight can be a drawback. Consider the frequency of use and your own physical capabilities when making this choice. One Montana note worth its own line: aluminum conducts. Aluminum ladder jacks and aluminum ladders can conduct electricity. Do not let ladders or ladder jacks come in contact with electrical wires.

The single most common buyer mistake is mismatched gear. Consider the width of your ladder’s rails. Ladder jacks must fit snugly to ensure stability. Measure your ladder’s rail width before purchasing jacks to avoid compatibility issues. Capacity varies more than people expect — ladder jacks come in various weight capacities, typically ranging from 250 to 500 pounds. Factor in your weight plus paint, tools, and materials, not just your bodyweight.

The ladders themselves aren’t negotiable. Ladders shall be Type 1 (250 lbs rated) or Type 1A (300 lbs rated). And don’t get clever about cobbling something together — job-made ladders must not be used to support ladder jack scaffolds.

The Plank Is the Part That Matters Most

The plank is your working surface and the most safety-critical buy in the kit. Two paths here: wood scaffold plank or a fabricated aluminum platform.

For wood, the standard is a 2x10 or 2x12 wooden plank, rated for scaffolding use. Width minimums differ by plank type. The minimum width of the platform shall be 18 inches when a wood plank is being used and 12 inches when a fabricated platform is being used. The overhang rule is fixed at both ends: planks and platforms shall be securely fastened to the supporting members to prevent lateral movement and shall overhang the supporting member by a minimum of 12 inches and a maximum of 18 inches. Length has a ceiling too — maximum lengths of planks in ladder supported scaffolds shall be 28 feet unless specifically designed for the application.

Now the rule nobody likes hearing: never paint a scaffold plank. Do not paint or plaster scaffold planks, and if paint or plaster is observed, promptly remove the plank from service. Paint hides the cracks you most need to see. A painter’s instinct is to slap a coat on everything — fight it. In Montana especially, moisture works on wood that sits outside. Store ladder jacks and planks in a dry place to prevent damage, and inspect the ladder, jacks, and planks for damage before each use. A hidden crack under paint, plus freeze-thaw on stored lumber, is exactly how a plank fails when someone’s standing on it.

Worth noting how worker count changes by plank type. Ladder jack scaffolds erected with wood scaffold planks or fabricated decorator plank shall be limited to one person on the plank. When erected with a fabricated scaffold plank, use shall be limited to no more than two persons, but only one person shall stand on each half of the plank’s span.

The fabricated route trades cost for capability. Setup Numbers and Safety

Setup takes two people. Two people are needed to set up the system; each person climbs a ladder, holding an end of the plank. Once the plank is in place, you do not need the helper again until it is time to take the scaffolding down.

Set the ladder angle right. The ladder shall be erected at a pitch of approximately 75-1/2 degrees from the horizontal. A simple rule is to place the base a distance from the wall equal to one-quarter the effective working length — the distance along the side rails from the bottom of the ladder to the support point of the upper portion. That’s the 4-to-1 rule.

Jack placement on the ladder has its own limits. Ladder jacks shall be placed no higher than the second rung from the top of the ladder, and shall never be placed above the upper support point of the ladder. Set both jacks dead even — make sure that both jacks are set to an equal height, and ensure the bracket jack is adjusted so it is parallel to the ground to create a level platform, then securely tighten the wing nuts to prevent slippage during use.

The ground underneath decides everything, and that’s where Montana sites get tricky. Keep ladders on stable and level surfaces, unless secured, to prevent accidental displacement. Ladders must be secured or provided with slip-resistant feet when used on slippery surfaces. Freeze-heaved, uneven ground is exactly what the footing has to overcome. The foundation must maintain the ladder base in a level position when four times the expected design working load is applied vertically, and shall be free of loose materials or substances that could allow the ladder to slip laterally.

Weather kills more painting jobs than bad gear. Avoid setup in windy or wet conditions to prevent slipping. Montana exterior windows are short — but a gusty day is not the day to be standing on a plank between two ladders.

Fall protection isn’t optional once you get up there. Employees working above 10 feet on a ladder jack scaffold must be protected from fall hazards by a personal fall arrest system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How high can a ladder jack scaffold go? The maximum height of the working surface for ladder supported scaffolds using ladder jacks shall not be more than 20 feet above the base of the ladder.

Why two ladders instead of one? This type of simple scaffolding is useful when you are working in one area for an extended period of time, or on an area where you cannot get a single ladder exactly where you need it — such as dead center on an upstairs window.

Are these safe to use near power lines? Keep aluminum well clear. Workers should avoid electrical hazards and look for overhead power lines before handling ladders, and should not use metal ladders near power lines or exposed energized electrical equipment.
