How to Match Duty Rating, Material, and Height to the Job
ToolsThe wrong ladder is the leading way people get hurt on one. Picking the right one comes down to three decisions made in order: how much weight it has to carry, what it’s made of, and how tall it needs to be. Get those three right and the rest is setup and common sense.
Start with the duty rating. Total load — the user plus tools plus materials — must never exceed the duty rating. That’s the part buyers blow most often. A duty rating isn’t your body weight. It’s everything riding up the ladder at once: you fully dressed, the tool belt, the bucket, the bundle of shingles in your arm. Werner runs five ratings, from Type III lightweight household use through Type II for basic projects, Type I for most working jobs, Type IA for rugged professional use at 300 pounds, up to Type IAA for the toughest, heaviest-duty work. For anything resembling a jobsite, Type II or heavier is the floor — and most pros land on IA or IAA.
This is the first safety call, and near electricity it isn’t a preference. Use fiberglass near electricity to reduce shock risk; use aluminum for general, non-conductive needs. Fiberglass doesn’t conduct, so it’s the right answer — and often the required one — anywhere current is in play. It’s also the durable choice for the long haul: it won’t dent, rust, or corrode, and it’s built to take temperature extremes. That last point matters in Montana, where a ladder lives through hot summer sun and deep cold, sometimes in the same week, and frequently stored outdoors or in an unheated shop.
Aluminum’s pitch is weight. It’s light and it won’t corrode, which makes it easy to carry from the truck to the work. But keep it away from anything electrical — full stop.

Stepladders reach roughly 4 feet above their height, and extension ladders should be 7 to 10 feet longer than the support point. Never stand above the support points or the roof line. The temptation to grab one more foot of reach by climbing too high is exactly how the accident reports read.
When the job means moving along a wall — taping, painting, trim — a rolling scaffold beats climbing up and down a ladder a hundred times. A scaffold is only as safe as how it’s set. Erect it plumb, level, and rigid on firm ground. Metal scaffold conducts electricity — keep it well clear of any current, same rule as an aluminum ladder. And weather is a real constraint on exposed sites: don’t run scaffold or ladders outdoors in high wind or adverse conditions.
Winter and shoulder-season work add hazards the manuals call out directly. Don’t use a ladder contaminated with snow, ice, or water, and don’t set up on slippery or icy footing. In a cold snap, be careful touching bare metal components — that goes for aluminum ladders and steel scaffold alike. This is where fiberglass earns its keep: tested for temperature extremes, corrosion-resistant, and a smarter pick for gear that gets stored cold and dragged out at first light.
A thirty-second look before you go up catches most failures. Check for cracks or damage, missing or loose bolts and rivets, worn or missing feet, frayed ropes on extension models, and rungs that should be straight and tight. If something’s wrong, tag the ladder out of service — Werner doesn’t recommend repairing a damaged ladder. A bad ladder kept in rotation is a claim waiting to happen.
What does a ladder’s duty rating actually measure? It’s the maximum combined weight the ladder is built to carry — the user fully clothed plus all tools and materials together. It is not your body weight alone. A Type IA fiberglass ladder rated at 300 pounds is built for heavy professional use, but the total of everything going up must still stay under that number.
Why use fiberglass instead of aluminum? Fiberglass doesn’t conduct electricity, so it’s the safe — and frequently required — choice anywhere near electrical hazards. It also resists denting, rust, and corrosion and holds up to temperature extremes. Aluminum is lighter and corrosion-resistant for general work, but it should never be used around electricity.
What size extension ladder do I need to reach a roof? The ladder should extend 7 to 10 feet beyond the highest point it contacts or rests against. Your highest safe standing level is four rungs down from the top, and you should never stand above the support points or step onto the roof line from too high on the ladder.
