How to Choose the Right Circular Saw Blade

The blade matters more than the saw. More than the brand of saw blade, getting the correct type of blade determines whether you’ll get a quality cut. A strong saw with the wrong blade leaves you with splintered plywood, burn marks in hardwood, and a tool that fights you the whole way through the cut.

Here’s the short version: match four specs to your saw and your material, and the rest falls into place. Diameter and arbor have to fit the saw. Tooth count and grind have to fit the job. Get those right and cuts come out clean and fast. Get them wrong and you’re sanding all night — or chasing a kickback.

The Four Specs That Define Every Blade

Before tooth count, before grind, before anything else — the blade has to physically fit your saw. Two numbers control that.

Diameter. Each tool generally accepts a specific size blade: typically 10 inches for tablesaws, 6-1/2 or 7-1/4 inches for handheld circular saws, 10 or 12 inches for mitersaws and radial-arm saws. Most standard handheld saws run a 7-1/4 inch blade. Some tools can use a smaller blade, but never attempt to use a larger one. Check your saw’s manual before buying any blade — using the wrong diameter is dangerous and can damage both the blade and the saw.

Arbor. The arbor is the hole in the center of the blade that fits onto the saw’s spindle. Most blades 10 inches or less in diameter mount on a 5/8 inch arbor, but 12 inch blades typically use a 1 inch arbor. Some blades have a 5/8 inch hole with a removable insert that accommodates smaller arbors. Always verify your saw’s arbor size before purchasing.

Tooth count. This is the single most important factor for cut quality. More teeth means smoother, finer cuts. Fewer teeth means faster, rougher cuts. More on this below.

Tooth grind. The shape of each tooth affects how it cuts. Different materials require different tooth geometries. Using the wrong geometry can damage both the blade and the material.

For reference, a full manufacturer catalog shows diameters such as 5-1/2”, 7-1/4”, 10”, 12”, 14”, and more, with various arbor fits (5/8”, 1”, 20mm, 1/2”, etc.) to match different saws.

Tooth Count and Grind — Matching the Blade to the Job

Tooth count is where most people go wrong. The instinct is to think more teeth is always better. It isn’t. Each tooth removes a small chip of material. Fewer teeth means bigger chips, faster material removal, but a rougher surface. More teeth means smaller chips, a smoother surface, but slower cutting speed because the blade has to work harder to clear all those tiny chips.

The most common beginner mistake worth calling out: the most common mistake beginners make is using a high tooth count blade for rough framing work — it cuts slower, generates more heat, and dulls faster than a lower tooth count blade designed for that purpose.

For a one-blade-does-most-things setup, the 40-tooth is the answer. If you own one circular saw and do general DIY work, a 40-tooth blade handles 90% of what you’ll throw at it. But when you’re cutting oak for a bookshelf project and need zero tearout, that’s when you swap to a 60T or 80T blade.

Grind geometry is the other half of the equation. The shape of the tooth tip decides what the blade cuts cleanly and what it tears apart.

  • ATB (Alternate Top Bevel). Teeth with alternating left- and right-pointing tips, made to minimize tear-out in wood and veneered plywood. General purpose, crosscutting, and plywood/melamine blades use this grind.
  • FTG (Flat Top Grind). Rip blades, used to cut wood parallel to the grain, have flat-top teeth with no bevel. This helps clear debris from the kerf. They act like tiny chisels, efficiently removing material along the grain.
  • TCG (Triple Chip Grind). Teeth alternate between a trapezoidal “chip” tooth and a flat “raker” tooth. The chip tooth pre-cuts the material, and the flat tooth cleans it up. TCG blades are excellent for cutting hard materials like laminates, particleboard, MDF, and even non-ferrous metals, as they reduce chipping.
  • ATBR (ATB with raker). Often found on combination blades, this design includes groups of ATB teeth followed by a single FTG tooth (the raker). This combination allows the blade to perform both ripping and cross-cutting reasonably well.

Matching Blade Material to What You’re Cutting

The teeth themselves are made from different materials, and putting the wrong one on the wrong job destroys the blade — sometimes in a single cut.

Carbide is the default for wood, no argument. Almost every blade used today has carbide teeth, which stay sharp far longer than all-steel blades. A quality carbide tipped blade will outlast a cheap HSS blade by a factor of 10 to 20 in typical use.

Beyond wood, match the blade to the material:

  • Metal. Standard wood blades will destroy themselves on metal. Metal cutting blades use carbide teeth with a triple chip grind (TCG) designed to handle the hardness of aluminum, steel, and other metals.
  • Masonry. These are abrasive diamond or silicon carbide blades with no teeth at all — they cut through friction rather than slicing. Used for concrete, brick, tile, and stone. These generate significant dust and heat — always use appropriate respiratory protection and eye protection.
  • Fiber cement. Fiber cement siding requires a specialized blade with polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tips. Standard blades dull almost instantly on this material. Worth knowing for siding work that has to stand up to wet, freeze-thaw conditions.

One safety point that applies to every non-wood blade: metal cutting blades run at slower speeds — always check the RPM rating matches your saw. Masonry and metal blades are built for lower RPMs, and pushing one past its rated speed is dangerous.

A couple of Montana-specific notes worth keeping in mind. When you’re cutting wet or sap-heavy softwood — common around here — some versions feature specialized wipers to reduce friction and prevent resin buildup when cutting wet or sap-heavy wood. And for anyone cutting treated lumber or storing tools in an unheated, humid shop, some coatings also protect the blade body from rust and corrosion, especially important if you work in humid environments or cut treated lumber.

Kerf, Installation, and Blade Care

Kerf is the width of the cut the blade makes, and it determines how hard your saw has to work. Heavy-duty stationary tablesaws generally use 1/8 inch kerf blades because those saws can easily power that blade through dense hardwoods. Tablesaws with motors rated at 1-1/2 hp or less, as well as mitersaws and radial-arm saws, get more apparent power with thin-kerf blades (about 3/32 inch). For cordless saws, thin kerf is the move — they remove less material, putting less strain on your saw and requiring less power. They are a great choice for cordless saws or lower-powered models. That matters in cold weather when battery capacity is already working against you.

Installation is simple but non-negotiable on the safety front. Pull the battery or unplug the saw first. Mount the blade with the teeth pointing in the direction of rotation. Set your depth so the blade extends approximately 6mm below the material being cut. Too deep increases kickback risk. And leave the guard alone — the blade guard exists for a reason. Never remove or disable it for convenience.

A dull blade is more than an annoyance — it’s a hazard. A dull blade requires more force, generates more heat, creates rougher cuts, and dramatically increases kickback risk. Replace or resharpen blades when they feel like they are working harder than usual. Carbide-tipped blades have an advantage here: they last significantly longer than HSS blades, can be resharpened professionally, and deliver clean cuts across a wide range of wood types.

What tooth count should a general-purpose blade have? Forty teeth. For most DIYers a quality 40-tooth combination blade handles 80% of wood cutting tasks effectively. Step up to 60 or 80 teeth when you need clean crosscuts in hardwood or trim, and drop to 24 teeth for fast framing rips.

What blade do I use for plywood without splintering? A high-tooth-count ATB blade. Plywood requires a blade with a high tooth count (60–80 teeth) to prevent the veneer from splintering on the exit side of the cut. The teeth should have an alternate top bevel (ATB) grind.
