How to Pick the Right One for the Job
ToolsThe fastest way to buy the wrong hand plane is to grab whatever’s closest and hope it works. It won’t. Each plane is engineered for a specific task, and the right choice comes down to matching the tool to the job — block planes for end grain and one-handed work, bench planes for heavy material removal and leveling. A draw knife is a different animal entirely — a two-handled shaving tool for shaping stock.

This guide is for trim carpenters, woodworkers, and serious DIYers who want a tool that fits the work. Get the type right first. Everything else — blade width, steel, adjustment — follows from that.
Plane length determines what a plane does. Short planes ride over small areas and hug curves. Long planes bridge dips and flatten. Here’s the working logic.
Block planes are the one-hand tool. Small, low-bedded, built for end grain and quick trim. On the Stanley 6-5/8 in. adjustable model, the cutter rests at a 21° angle, ideal for cross-grain planing, and thickness and evenness of shavings can be changed by loosening the clamping wheel and manually adjusting the cutter. It has a gray cast-iron base with precision-ground sides and a finger-rest at the front of the plane that adds comfort and control.
The RB5 is the jobsite-friendly block plane. It’s compact, perfect for narrow work areas, with cutting depth that’s easy to set and dual-blade positioning for both regular planing and bullnosing into corners. The blade change is quick and easy with no honing required, and there’s blade storage in the handle. Replacement blades are available for bullnose work, regular planing, and work on plastics and laminates. For a carpenter who doesn’t want to stop and hone mid-job, that’s the draw.
Bench/smoothing planes — the No. 4 is the workhorse here — handle finishing. The No. 4 adjustable bench plane runs a cast-iron base with precision-ground sides and bottom, an epoxy coating, a hardened tempered steel cutter, a quick-release cam-lock, and manual depth adjustment, with high-impact polymer handles for comfort. It’s a fine general-purpose bench plane — and honing is recommended before use. That last point matters: most of these ship needing a sharpening session before they earn their keep.
For the buyer who wants the best edge holding in difficult wood, the SweetHeart No. 4 steps up. It uses extra-thick 1/8 in. A2 steel for excellent edge retention, with a one-piece base and frog, a Norris-type adjuster with lateral locking, and an adjustable throat plate. That one-piece base and frog construction virtually eliminates chatter — which is exactly what you fight when planing figured or contrary grain.
Draw knives belong to a separate category. Two handles, you pull the blade toward you to shave and shape stock. This is the tool for rustic and timber work, rounding edges, and roughing out shapes a plane can’t reach.
Blade width tells you how much surface the plane covers per pass. Steel tells you how long the edge lasts between honings.

On steel: the Stanley range of planes features hardened, tempered, and precision-ground chrome carbon alloy steel cutters. Standard irons hold a workable edge for general carpentry. The premium SweetHeart line jumps to extra-thick 1/8 in. A2 steel for better edge retention — worth it if you’re working hard or figured stock where a dull edge tears instead of cuts. The thicker iron and one-piece frog cut down chatter on the grain that gives cheaper planes trouble.
Replacement blades aren’t universal — they’re model-specific. The 6-5/8 in. block plane takes replacement iron 12-330, the SweetHeart No. 4 takes blade 12-141, and bench plane irons vary by model. Match the part number to your plane.
Plan on honing. Stanley block plane cutter blades are hardened, tempered high-carbon chrome steel for edge retention, ground to a flat surface for easy sharpening, and can be honed to a razor-sharp edge. They come with an accurate ground edge of 25°, and finishing with an additional honed angle of 30° is recommended. That secondary 30° bevel is your working edge — it’s what you touch up between jobs.
The RB5 is the exception. Its blade change is quick and easy with no honing required — you swap a fresh blade instead of stopping to sharpen. Different philosophy, same goal: a sharp edge when you need one.
Daily-use features separate a plane you reach for from one that lives in a drawer. Look for these:
On warranty: most of these planes carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty — Stanley will repair defects from faulty materials or workmanship within the warranty terms. A few regional and specialty versions are excluded, so confirm by model.
Cast-iron plane bodies and carbon-steel irons rust. Epoxy coatings on the base help, but bare soles and edges flash-rust fast in a damp shop or an unheated garage through a Montana winter. Wipe the sole and the blade with a light oil and store dry. A draw knife’s exposed edge needs the same treatment. Two minutes of care beats sanding rust off a pitted sole come spring.
Two items anchor the local lineup. The Stanley 6 in. block plane (model 12-960) is the compact one-hand tool for trim, end grain, and tight work. The 225 mm draw knife (model 500-1320) is the two-handled shaper for rustic, timber, and edge-rounding jobs.
