How to Buy the Right Few and Keep Them Working
ToolsThe honest truth about hand tools in this category: most buyers own too many and use too few. A small set of quality chisels, files, and punches — kept sharp and stored dry — outperforms a drawer crammed with neglected steel. This guide is for the DIY woodworker, hobbyist furniture maker, or Montana tradesperson building a first kit or replacing worn tools.
Here’s the single most useful thing to know up front. While it seems logical to focus on the steel of the chisel, that’s one of the smallest concerns. There’s basically good steel and bad steel. Bad steel won’t hold an edge for more than a few minutes of work. Good steel covers a wide range of tools from the well-made hardware-store tool up to premium products. There are differences in edge-holding between the inexpensive and expensive stuff, but if you keep your chisels sharp with regular honing, you won’t really notice the difference. Sharpness beats price. Every time.
There are three chisel types worth knowing first. The main type of wood chisels you’ll want when first getting started in traditional woodworking are bench chisels, mortise chisels, and paring chisels. Get those right and the specialty patterns can wait.
Bench chisels are the workhorse. Bench chisels are multi-purpose woodworking chisels used so often that they usually sit on the bench, used for chopping and paring the wood. The bevel-edge pattern is the one to own. It’s better with a bevel — the narrow flats on the long edges let you sneak into acute corners, yet they’re strong enough for fairly heavy work. One veteran’s verdict after trying every style: the basic bevel-edge chisel is the most handy pattern for making furniture. A good bevel-edge chisel can handle almost any task imaginable.
How many sizes? Fewer than you think. A set of five — 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4” and 1” — is more than enough. If you’re starting from scratch, buy one and grow from there. Buy a 1/2” tool — the most-used size — then expand cautiously from there.
Mortise chisels are the exception to the bevel-edge rule. The only exception to the love for bevel-edge chisels is mortising. If you cut your mortises by hand, you’ll be best served by a couple dedicated mortise chisels. Bevel-edge chisels can snap in a deep mortise. The reason is mass. Mortising needs mass. Hand-mortising can be brutal on the wood and the maker. Mortise chisels are built to withstand heavy blows and levering out boulders of waste. Don’t buy a whole set. Start with a 1/4” chisel if you work mostly with 3/4”-thick material, or a 5/16” if you work mostly with 7/8” to 1”. Let your work dictate the next size you purchase.
Paring chisels are the delicate ones — and the rule here is absolute. Paring chisels are more delicate chisels used for careful slicing of the wood. They have thinner steel and are usually sharpened with a low angle to aid in paring end-grain and difficult grain. Paring chisels should never be struck with a mallet, but only used with the hands.
Beyond those three sit the specialty patterns — buy them only when the work demands it. The fishtail chisel is a huge help when cleaning up half-blind dovetails. The swan-neck chisel scours the bottom of mortises. And the drawer-lock chisel lets you work in tight quarters. A trick worth knowing: the drawer-lock chisel gets you into tight places when installing locks in small drawers, but you can get around owning one — install the lock before assembling the drawer.
The handle matters more than the steel grade. Two attachment styles exist. Chisels attach by either a socket or tang. A socket chisel has the cone-shaped handle fit into the metal socket of the chisel. Tang chisels have a pointed metal tang fastened inside the wood handle. For heavy blows, the socket wins. Socket chisel handles are more durable than tang handles, and so they are more popular. The reason: socket chisels sit on top of the handle’s cone and can take a severe beating, whereas tang chisels sit inside a handle’s mortise and can split the wood handle if repeatedly struck hard enough.
Wood or plastic? Each has a place. Wood handles give better balance, and that balance is what makes a chisel feel like an extension of your hand. Whatever the handle, strike it right. Handles often break when someone strikes a wood chisel with a metal hammer. You should only ever strike a chisel with a wooden mallet. And don’t overdo it. Chop sparingly with a bench chisel, and don’t keep pounding after it has sunk deep into the wood.
Files confuse more buyers than any other tool here. Start with the cut. A single-cut file has a single set of parallel, diagonal rows of teeth. Single-cut files are often used with light pressure to produce a smooth surface finish or to put a keen edge on knives, shears or saws. Need to remove material fast? A double-cut file has two sets of diagonal rows of teeth. The double-cut file is used with heavier pressure than the single-cut and removes material faster from the workpiece.
Then there’s coarseness — three grades to know. Most files have three grades of cut: bastard-cut, second-cut and smooth-cut. Bastard is the coarsest of the three. Bastard is file coarseness between “Coarse and Second Cut.” Size and coarseness move together. In selecting the right file, consider the shape, size and coarseness. The size and coarseness are directly related — the larger the file the more stock it will remove, and the smaller the file the finer the finish it will achieve.
The general rule for matching file to task:
Generally speaking, bastard and second-cut grades of double-cut files would be chosen for fast removal of stock, while single-cut files and smooth double-cut files would be chosen for finishing.
Shape follows contour. A rasp-cut has a series of individual teeth formed by a single-pointed tool. This produces a rough cut and is used primarily on wood, hooves, aluminum and lead. For automotive bodywork, a different shape applies — a curved-cut / mill tooth file has its teeth arranged in curved contours across the file face and is normally used in automotive body shops for smoothing body panels.
Two terms every file buyer should recognize. Pinning is filings wedged between the file teeth. Shelling is the breaking of file teeth, usually caused by using too much pressure, reverse filing, or filing sharp corners or edges. Translation: ease off the pressure and don’t ride sharp corners, or you’ll chip the teeth right off.
Use a handle. A handle is a holder into which the tang of the file fits. If the file has an integral holder, this is known as a solid handle file.
One Montana note worth its own paragraph. Files leave the factory with rust protection — the file is cleaned and sharpened, the tang reheated for strength, then given a series of tests and oiled to prevent rust. That oiling tells you everything about storage. In an unheated shop with seasonal humidity swings and freeze-thaw, bare file steel will rust. Keep a light oil film on the teeth and store them dry.
Punches and metalworking chisels serve construction, masonry, and mechanical work. Misuse here isn’t just sloppy — it’s dangerous.

The most common mistake — and the one that wrecks tools — is grabbing the wrong punch to start. The most common mistake mechanics make is grabbing a pin punch to break loose a pin when the proper tool is a tapered punch. Using a pin punch to start the initial removal can damage the punch and the part being driven. Do it in order: start with a taper punch, then switch to the pin punch to complete the removal.
Cold chisels — the metalworking flat chisels — earn their keep on steel. Flat chisels, often called cold chisels, are the most common metalworking chisels. They feature a flat wide tip with a cutting edge; the size is determined by the width of the tip. Common uses are breaking chain, removing burrs, and cutting bolts. The category runs broad — guarded cold chisels for concrete and masonry, electrician variants, brick chisels, and flooring chisels, in widths from 0.75” up to 4”. One hard limit on what they’ll cut: be sure the object being cut is not harder than the chisel itself. Otherwise, the chisel’s point will dull or be destroyed.
Safety on struck tools is non-negotiable. Ensure the hammer’s head diameter is never more than 3/8” larger than the head of the chisel or punch. Always use a proper punch or chisel holder — never use a pair of locking pliers, as they create sharp indentations that can endanger your hands later. Always wear safety goggles.
And when you resharpen a cold chisel, reach for a file, not a grinder. The best way to re-sharpen the chisel is to re-file the cutting edge using a hand file, not a grinder. Using a grinder could result in the chisel losing its temper.
This is the part that separates tools that work from tools that frustrate. Set your bevel angle first. A primary bevel at 25 to 30 degrees handles general work; mortise chisels run steeper, 30 to 35 degrees, for durability under heavy blows. You may add a slightly steeper secondary micro-bevel to the edge to increase durability.
Then hone often — during the work, not just before it. Chisels should be honed regularly during work. When chopping out dovetails in a chest or case, rehone the chisel after every corner. There’s a rhythm to it. When dovetailing a carcase, hone after each corner. On a large drawer, maybe two corners before honing. With small drawers, hone after finishing each drawer. Why bother that often? The most critical aspect of using these tools is sharpness. A dull tool is dangerous and produces poor results.
Struck tools need a different kind of upkeep. Punches and cold chisels are differentially tempered — the striking end is softer than the working end. That softer end mushrooms with use, and a mushroomed head is a hazard. When any punch or chisel mushrooms on the striking end, it must be dressed to prevent the mushrooming pieces from chipping off and causing harm. Dress it back. Keep the working edge clean and sharp.
If a chisel simply won’t hold an edge, the steel — not your technique — is the problem. Bottom line: if your chisel won’t hold an edge for more than a few chops, send it back to the maker or learn to heat treat steel.
What’s the smallest set of chisels worth buying? Start with one bench chisel and grow deliberately. Buy a 1/2” tool — the most-used size — then expand cautiously from there. A common beginner kit runs three sizes. 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1” chisels are all you need to start. A full bevel-edge set of five (1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4”, 1”) covers nearly any furniture task.
