How to Pick the Right One for Your Property

Spreaders throw dry granular product — fertilizer, grass seed, ice melt. Sprayers push liquid through a pump and nozzle — herbicides, insecticides, liquid fertilizer, de-icers. If you only need to fertilize your lawn or apply salt to a driveway or lot, a spreader will be simpler. If you need the versatility to apply herbicides and pesticides to different areas and also want to apply fertilizer over a large area, it may be worth looking at a sprayer. For a lot of Montana property owners, the honest answer is both — a spreader for fall fertilizer and winter salt, a sprayer for spot-treating weeds.
A spreader is a simple machine. It broadcasts or “spreads” the material with a spinning disc that has vanes or fins in it, similar to the impeller of a pump. The material is held in a hopper, and a small gate in the bottom opens to allow the material to drop onto the disc. The rotation of the disk propels material away from the spreader as it moves forward, resulting in an even distribution.
The case for spreaders is straightforward. A lawn spreader is mechanical and does not rely on a pump to operate. There is no need to make adjustments to pressure or flow rate. The material simply drops through the slide gate and is thrown out by the spinning disc. The operator sets the gate opening to apply the desired amount and then pushes it by hand or pulls it with a mower or lawn tractor. Fewer parts means fewer headaches. A sprayer can leak or the pump can fail to work. A spreader is mechanically driven and generally has fewer components that can fail.
There’s one Montana detail worth pulling out: drift. Spreaders do not have the same risk of drift as a sprayer. Liquid droplets from a sprayer can be blown off target by wind, which can result in unwanted damage to other plants or animals. As spreaders apply solid material, there is little if any risk of drift. On an open, breezy lot — and a lot of this country runs windy — that matters.
Where sprayers earn their keep is precision and versatility. Sprayers are especially versatile when it comes to lawn care, offering precision and control. Those characteristics play an important role in applications like weed control, disease management, and applying plant growth regulators. The reason is physical: one of the key advantages of sprayers is their ability to deliver liquid products directly to the foliage, which is crucial for tasks like post-emergent weed control, where the herbicide needs to be absorbed by the leaves. A granule sitting on the ground can’t do that.
For fertilizing, though, a spreader often wins. Spreading offers a more controlled and consistent nutrient release, often allowing for less frequent applications due to the slow-release nature of granules. These granules can release nutrients based on temperature or moisture.

Spreaders come in two main walk-behind styles. There are drop spreaders and broadcast spreaders. Drop spreaders drop whatever product you fill them with directly under the spreader. They are best for smaller yards because they cover a relatively small area with each pass, but they are very precise in their application. Compare that to the broadcast type: broadcast spreaders spray the product out in a fan-like pattern. They are less precise but let you quickly cover large lawn spaces. You’ll just need to be extra careful you don’t get lawn products in the wrong place — for example, herbicides in the flower bed.
Beyond the walk-behinds, spreaders can be pushed by someone like a lawn mower or pulled by a lawn tractor, ATV, or large tractor. Spreaders can also be mounted on equipment or self-propelled similar to large agricultural sprayers.
Western Building Center’s spreader lineup runs from the handheld up. There’s a handheld seed spreader for small jobs, a broadcast mini spreader, and an 80-pound broadcast spreader for covering more ground in a pass.
Sprayers scale even wider. Manual sprayers come in several styles, including small hand-held sprayers, canister models, and canisters carried like a backpack. Step up from there and powered backpack sprayers make it easy to work on large properties. These are powered by a gasoline engine or a battery-powered motor and have a much longer spray range.
On the larger end, the equipment fans out considerably. One supplier lineup covers spot, skid, trailer, UTV, and ATV sprayers designed to fertilize, eliminate weeds, get rid of pests, water, and apply fungicides and herbicides. Models range from 15 gallon up to 200-gallon, with either 12-volt or gas engine powered pumps. Boom choices include 2, 5, or 7 nozzle traditional booms or 3 nozzle broadcast booms. Pressure ratings vary by job, running anywhere from low-pressure spot units up to 0-300 PSI on the heavier rigs.
The sprayers on Western Building Center’s shelves cover the homeowner-to-small-property range: a 48-ounce garden hand sprayer for spot work, 1- and 2-gallon tank sprayers in poly and heavy-duty versions, back-saver models in 1- and 2-gallon sizes, and a dedicated 2-gallon deck stain sprayer.
Property size and access dictate the choice more than anything. The pros draw a hard line on the small end: any lawn smaller than 6,000 square feet is done by hand. Below that, a ride-on just wastes time backing up and turning.
Slope is a safety issue, not a preference. On a smaller lawn with a lot of backing up and tight turns, you might spend twice as long as you would if you grab the backpack sprayer and do it by hand. Ride-on equipment shouldn’t be used on anything with any degree of slope, because it gets operators into trouble and becomes a safety issue. If it’s flat, use the ride-on. That’s worth remembering on Whitefish-style sloped mountain lots.
For the big flat properties, combo machines exist. A compact stand-on unit shows what’s possible: fast forward speeds of up to 5.5 mph, a large 175-lb. hopper and a 20-gallon spray tank. Access is built in — the compact design allows for maneuverability in tight spaces, including fitting through 36” gates. It also carries a hand-held spray wand standard for spot spraying, and an adjustable spreading width from 4 ft to 22 ft.
But self-propelled gear comes with real trade-offs. A self-propelled spreader or sprayer costs considerably more than a non-power walk-behind. And they’re heavier on the turf: a large self-propelled machine will potentially cause more turf damage and compaction than a non-powered walk-behind spreader. There may be some days when a non-powered machine could be used without damaging turf while a self-propelled machine could not be used because of wet soil. In a region where spring thaw keeps ground saturated for weeks, that wet-soil limitation isn’t theoretical.
Neither tool works right out of the gate without setup. First rule, every time: training on a spreader focuses mainly on calibration and understanding the swath width to ensure even application, while sprayers require operators to know different product types — wettable powders, liquids, emulsifiable concentrates, flowables, and water-dispersible granules — each of which may require different mixing techniques.
Spreaders need overlap on every pass, and here’s why. When going back and forth on a lawn, you want to overlap the swath, as the fertilizer isn’t equally spread across the swath width. It is most concentrated in the center and gradually decreases the further away from the spreader the granules land. Skip the overlap and you get striping — fed lanes next to starved ones.
One sneaky calibration killer worth knowing: spreaders being transported in the bed of a truck can lose calibration from the vibrations. As they sit in the bed while driving, they have the risk of accidentally becoming recalibrated when hitting bumps, so the operator has to make sure everything is correctly calibrated between jobs.
Sprayers ask more. Calibrating a sprayer is more difficult. With a spreader, you simply set the gate opening. A sprayer requires knowing the nozzle size, spacing, speed, and application rate, and you must calibrate it by driving over a small area to ensure you’re applying the right amount. Nozzle choice isn’t a detail, either — the wrong ones can mean ineffective pesticides or herbicides.
A useful add-on for keeping product where it belongs: remote deflector kits on rotary spreaders. When you’re trying to spread around areas like sidewalks, driveways, and beds, you can remotely put a shield down and keep it from going into those areas.
On upkeep, the gap between the two is wide. Maintenance for sprayers includes cleaning the tanks, checking gaskets, and general upkeep of components. With tank and ride-on sprayers with engines, standard engine maintenance protocols also apply. Spreaders don’t require as much maintenance, with the primary focus being calibration. And the cold-weather step nobody should skip here: sprayers need to be rinsed out and winterized. Spreaders should be rinsed out as well but it is not as crucial. A sprayer left full going into a hard freeze is a cracked pump waiting to happen.
Do I really need both a sprayer and a spreader? It depends on what you’re applying. If you only need to fertilize your lawn or apply salt to a driveway or lot, a spreader will be simpler. If you need the versatility to apply herbicides and pesticides to different areas and also want to apply fertilizer over a large area, it may be worth looking at a sprayer. Many property owners end up with one of each.
