There’s no single best rake or fork. The right one depends entirely on what you’re moving — leaves, soil, gravel, compost, or thatch. Grab the wrong tool and you’ll fight it the whole way. Using the wrong rake is the equivalent of using a hairbrush to brush your teeth with. It can cause damage and it can give you less than stellar results.
The smart move is matching the tool to the task first, then picking durable construction that’ll survive a Montana season. Steel left outside rusts. Cheap stamped heads bend. Below is how the types break down and how to choose between them.
Start with what you’re actually raking. Each type is purpose-built and struggles outside its lane.
Garden rake (bow rake). The workhorse most homeowners already own. A garden rake will have a long and straight handle, with a stiff, wide head at a right angle to the handle. The head will typically be made of sturdy metal, and have many short tines attached to it. The tines will be rigid and unmoveable, making them ideal for tougher jobs such as breaking up compacted soil. Use it for leveling out soil or sand, raking up flower beds, or aerating soil. Its sturdy build allows it to rake up materials heavier than leaves, such as gravel, and mulch. Don’t reach for it on leaves, though. Leaves actually will clog this up instantly. So it can’t be used for leaves effectively.
Leaf rake (lawn rake). Long, fan-shaped, flexible tines. It can remove light debris. It can obviously remove leaves themselves, and it can remove grass that has been freshly cut, or if you’re trying to thatch your grass, a leaf rake is a great tool to go with. If you choose to use this with rocks or clay soil, you’re going to be less than impressed because it’s not meant for that. It has very flexible teeth for the purpose of catching very lightweight debris.
Thatch rake (dethatching rake). Dethatching, which is removing the build up of dead grass and other organic material between the grass and the soil, is important for a healthy lawn. A thatch rake may have just one side of tines on its head, but many have two. One side of the rake will be for breaking up the clumps of thatch, and the other side is for removing it from the lawn. The tines on these rakes are so sharp that they operate like blades. They are sharp and strong, being sharp enough to break up the thatch, and strong enough to drag it out. Timing matters here — generally, you do it in the spring, which lines up with Montana lawns greening up after a hard winter.
Shrub rake. Narrow head for tight work. A shrub rake may look like a miniature leaf rake, but it’s made to work in tight spaces. A shrub rake is the tool to use when removing leaves and debris from between shrubs, along fence lines, and from flower beds. The tines span less than 10 inches.
Landscape rake. The big one for moving rock and gravel — relevant in rural areas where gravel driveways are the norm. These are jumbo-sized garden rakes, and they are literally meant to move rock and gravel. So, if you need to flatten out rock or gravel in pathways, maybe you have a driveway or something like that, this landscape rake is the route you want to go. It is very wide in how large it is, and it has a bit of weight to it to help with grabbing onto those rocks. And the teeth themselves are very, very small. Heads run up to 38 inches wide.
Hand rake. Similar in size to a trowel, a hand rake is best for precise, detailed work. Use it to till soil, remove debris and pull weeds in flower beds. It also works well to break up the soil in pots before you plant a container garden.
Roof rake. The Montana winter essential. While snow on a roof looks picturesque, too much of it can damage or cave in your roof. So, in high-snow areas, a roof rake is a necessity. This rake has a slightly curved blade attached to a telescoping handle that reaches around 15 feet. In country where snow load is the dominant structural worry, pulling snow off before it piles up is cheap insurance.
Leaf scoop rake. For folks who’d rather not bend. A leaf scoop rake has a set of curved edges that open up like jaws to scoop and hold leaves to be easily transported. This makes raking up leaves an easier and less messy operation. It will also be especially useful for anyone prone to back injuries. Keep it to leaves — it has a plastic construction, and is not particularly strong and should therefore only be used to move piles of leaves around. It would not withstand trying to transport heavier garden materials, such as gravel or compacted soil.
Western Building Center’s rake selection covers the common ground: bow rakes in 14- and 16-tine steel configurations, a 26-tine lawn/leaf rake, a 24-tine steel leaf rake, a 30-inch poly leaf rake, and a 30-inch-wide landscape rake on a 66-inch handle.
Forks split across very different jobs, and tine count is the tell.
Digging fork. Heavy-duty digging forks with four square or rounded tines for compact soil. Good for breaking ground and lifting root crops. The spading forks WBC carries run a 4-tine head on a fiberglass handle.
Manure, hay, and pitch forks. More tines, lighter build, made for loose material. From shoveling wood chips to mucking out stalls, these handle compost, mulch, and manure. Tine counts run from a few up to around 10 depending on the material — silage and lighter debris want more tines, packed manure wants fewer and stouter. WBC stocks 5-tine and 10-tine versions.
Border fork. Border forks are smaller, lighter alternatives for precision work in tight beds.
Broadfork. This is the one that earns its keep in Montana’s clay and rocky valleys. A broadfork, also known as a grelinette, is an essential tool for small-scale farming and gardening using a no-till approach to soil preparation. Broadforks aerate and loosen soils with much less damage to soil structure, lifting and opening the ground without shredding it the way a motorized tiller does. Forks require no power and don’t put gasoline fumes into the garden. Curved round tines penetrate the toughest soils, and flexible ash handles make the tool a pleasure to work with.
It works the compacted, rocky ground common across the valleys. In heavy clay soil you can see and feel the ground loosening and breathing again, the broadfork opening it gently and leaving the layers underneath undisturbed. And in a bit of Montana improvisation, faced with a driveway covered in hard-packed icy snow, you can pull the broadfork out of the garden shed and start creating crevasses everywhere, then relocate the broken-up pieces of hard pack with a big scoop snow shovel. A four-season tool, in other words.
Build quality on broadforks varies. The CobraHead runs 1045 carbon steel extremely resistant to bending or breaking, while the Bully Tools version uses 10-gauge 100% Made In The USA steel, with a steel encasement around the fiberglass handles, and a reinforcing wood core on 11” tines with handles that measure 42.5”, for a total tool length of 56”.
Grip choice matters too. Choose D-grips for maximum leverage and T-grips for controlled, repetitive lifting.

Head and handle materials are the single biggest factor in whether a tool lasts. Here’s the rundown.

On head metal, metal is the most durable material for both rake heads and handles; it can take on jobs other materials can’t. For handles, a fiberglass handle is lightweight and more durable than wood. Plastic has its place — plastic rakes are lightweight, won’t rust, and generally are the least expensive. But they are the least durable. However, polyresin rakes may be a good compromise as they offer durability and flexibility.
The rust question is the one that matters most through Montana’s wet springs and freeze-thaw cycles. Steel tools left in the weather will corrode. Stainless steel is preferred for low-maintenance rust resistance, while carbon steel offers high strength but requires regular oiling to prevent corrosion. Either keep them under cover or commit to maintenance.
One more durability tell: replaceable handles. A quality fork with a replaceable handle means a snapped shaft doesn’t send the whole tool to the scrap pile.
Tine count tracks the job. Leaf rakes typically run 22 to 26 tines, bow rakes around 16, and manure forks anywhere from 4 to 10 depending on what you’re moving.
Which rake works for leaves versus soil? Use a leaf or lawn rake for leaves — the long, flexible fan-shaped tines gather light debris without clogging. For soil, use a garden (bow) rake with short, stiff metal tines made to level dirt, break compacted ground, and spread mulch. The two don’t cross over well: a bow rake clogs instantly on leaves, and a leaf rake is useless on clay or rock.
When is the right time to dethatch a lawn? Dethatching removes the buildup of dead grass and organic material between the grass and the soil, and it’s generally done in spring. That timing works well for lawns coming out of a hard winter. For small jobs a manual thatch rake does the work; for large areas or heavy thatch, a power rake or vertical mower is the better call. The blades are sharp, so set them just under the grass surface and pull toward you.
Is a broadfork worth it for hard clay soil? Yes. A broadfork loosens and aerates compacted ground without flipping the soil layers or shredding structure the way a tiller does, and it needs no fuel or power. It delivers real results in heavy clay and rocky soil, opening the ground gently while preserving the ecology underneath — which is exactly what the dense, clay-heavy soils in many Montana valleys call for.
Steel or fiberglass handle — which holds up better? Fiberglass handles are lighter and more durable than wood, while ash wood absorbs shock in the traditional way. For heads and tines, forged steel is the most durable, but it can rust. Stainless steel resists corrosion with little maintenance; carbon steel is strong but needs oiling. Given Montana’s wet springs and freeze-thaw cycles, fiberglass handles paired with stainless or well-maintained steel heads hold up best.
Is a roof rake really necessary? In high-snow country, yes. Too much snow on a roof can damage or even cave it in. A roof rake uses a telescoping handle reaching about 15 feet so snow can be pulled down from the ground before the load gets dangerous. Where snow load is the dominant structural concern, it’s a basic piece of winter equipment.
