That last point trips up a lot of folks. Extra length is extra weight you’re hauling and extra pressure you’re losing. Buy what reaches, not more.
Diameter is the call that matters most, and it’s the one people overlook. Three common sizes cover nearly every job. Half-inch handles light container and patio work. Five-eighths is the workhorse for most lawns and gardens. Three-quarter-inch moves serious volume — large properties, multiple sprinklers running at once, filling stock tanks.
Material decides how long the thing lasts. This matters more in Montana than almost anywhere. Cheap vinyl cracks in cold and sun. Quality rubber stays flexible when the temperature drops hard. Look for crush-proof brass couplings on the hose ends. Nickel-plated brass couplings with a hexagonal six-sided shape and double-spiral reinforcing hold up where the hose meets the spigot — the spot that takes the most abuse.

Most watering headaches start at the connections. Cross-threaded fittings, cracked plastic, a slow drip that never quits. The fix is simple: use brass where it counts.
Brass resists cross-threading and stands up to weather. Ensure all connections match in diameter and use brass fittings to prevent leaks. The standard outdoor faucet connection is 3/4-inch, so most fittings size to that. Mechanical egg-timer styles shut the water off after a set period. For multiple sprinklers, you need flow capacity. Flow range runs 5 to 12 GPM, and the high-flow design operates up to five impact sprinklers.

The good news on timers: they aren’t just for sprinklers. A hose-end timer automates hose-end sprinklers, drip irrigation systems, or soaker hoses, so the same controller runs your lawn and your beds.
