A 350-count bucket is the workhorse pack size for construction screws. It’s a standard professional pack size for medium-to-large projects, typically containing high-strength, star-drive fasteners — and most come with a driver bit tossed in the lid. The point of buying by the bucket is coverage. Fasteners are available in key sizes for decking top board and fencing applications, with optimized pack counts covering the square footage of decking from 100 sq ft to 400 sq ft.

Here’s the thing most buyers get backwards. The screw type and finish matter far more than the pack size. To choose the right screw, diagnose your failure mode — corrosion, shear, or pullout — and match the screw to your environment and substrate. Get the coating wrong on a Montana deck and you’ll be chasing rust streaks in two springs. Get the length wrong on a structural connection and it pulls out under snow load. The bucket is just the box. What’s inside is the decision.

Matching Material and Coating to Exposure

Corrosion is what kills exterior fasteners first. For inside work and covered framing, a case-hardened carbon steel screw with a quality coating handles it. The R4-style multi-purpose screws run a Climatek AC257 code approved coating, which is the kind of treatment built to survive treated-lumber contact and weather.

For anything outdoors and exposed — decks, fences, exterior framing — step up. For outdoor projects, use 304 stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized screws. Montana’s freeze-thaw punishment, snowmelt sitting at the ground line, and repeated wet-dry cycling chew through cheap finishes fast. A coated screw rated for treated lumber, or stainless, earns its keep here.

What about 316 marine-grade stainless? In coastal areas, 316 marine-grade stainless is mandatory to prevent corrosion. The 316 Conquest deck screws are made from 316 stainless steel, providing corrosion resistance even in saltwater and coastal environments. Montana’s landlocked. You almost never need 316 here — save the money and run 304 stainless or hot-dip galvanized for outdoor work.

Sizes, Threads, Drives, and Heads

After material, the next decision is geometry — gauge, length, thread, drive, and head style. The rules are concrete.

Thread first. For softwoods, use coarse threads; for hardwoods, metals, or MDF, use fine threads. For deck boards specifically, gauge follows species: for deck boards consisting of pressure-treated lumber, cedar and redwood use #9 or #10 gauge screws. For Southern Yellow Pine use #10.

Drive style decides how much cussing happens at the gun. Star/Torx drives — T20, T25 — resist cam-out far better than Phillips. The recessed star drive gives zero stripping, with 6 points of contact. Drive a dock with treated 5/4 decking and the T25 head won’t strip out, even hitting it at a 45 degree angle and spinning around the screw head. That’s the difference a good drive makes.

Head style depends on the finish you want. Bugle and flat heads sit flush. The flat head sits flush with the surface for a clean, professional look, while deep threads grip tight into pressure-treated wood, hardwoods, and composite materials.

Point type controls whether you pre-drill. A Type-17 point means you generally don’t. Installation is fast and frustration-free thanks to the self-starting point and no need for pre-drilling in most cases. Applications: Decking, Framing, and Concrete

The big advantage of a multi-purpose construction screw is range. The R4-style screws work across wood, particle board, sheet metal, cement fiber board, laminate and wood decking and melamine. That covers most of what a remodel or deck build throws at you. These same screws carry structural approval. Concrete is a different animal entirely. W-BS concrete screws are a separate category for anchoring into masonry and concrete. They’re built for fastening metal structures, railings, base plates, supports, metal profiles, and brackets in concrete. One caution worth flagging: the zinc-plated versions aren’t for wet service. W-BS galvanized steel may only be used in dry indoor room conditions. For exposed concrete work, the stainless A4 version is the one — W-BS/A4 stainless steel can be used in dry indoor conditions, outdoors, or in wet rooms, provided no particularly aggressive conditions are present.

Installation Basics

The right screw still fails if you drive it wrong. Three rules cover most of it.

Penetration first. Follow the two-thirds rule: ensure the screw penetrates the receiving material by at least two-thirds of its length, or at least 1 inch — whichever is greater. On snow-load-bearing deck and structural connections — which is most of what gets built in Montana — that depth is what keeps the connection holding when the roof and deck pile up.

Driving technique second. Use the driver bit included in the bucket, apply steady pressure to prevent cam-out, and do not over-drive the screw, as this can crush wood fibers and compromise holding strength. Sinking the head too deep feels productive. It isn’t. You’re shredding the wood that’s supposed to hold.

Pre-drilling last. With a Type-17 point you generally skip it. But dense hardwoods are the exception — running 316 stainless into a hard dock plank, you still pre-drill an inch and a half before driving the screws. When the wood’s hard enough to fight back, a pilot hole saves heads and reduces splitting.
