How to Pick the Right Structural Wood Fastener

WBS stands for Wood Building Screws, and they’re not the same animal as a general-purpose deck screw. These are self-tapping screws made from special carbon steel, hardened, with corrosion protection, in outer thread diameters from 3.0 mm to 12.0 mm and overall lengths ranging from 16 mm to 600 mm. What sets them apart is the engineering behind them. They’re rated for static and quasi-static loads in load-bearing timber structures — meaning a roof connection, a rafter assembly, a glulam joint can actually count on a published load capacity, not a guess.

For a framer or serious builder, that distinction governs where these screws belong. The key decision isn’t grabbing whatever fits the driver. It’s matching diameter, length, head type, and corrosion coating to the specific timber and the exposure it’ll see. Get the coating wrong on an exterior connection in Montana, and you’ll be looking at a corroded fastener long before the wood gives out.

A quick note to avoid confusion: there’s a separate product called the W-BS concrete screw, an A4 stainless anchor for fastening into concrete. That’s a high-load concrete fastener for mounting rails, panels, and fire-protection panels in concrete — different product line, not the wood screw covered here.

Sizes, Heads, and Thread Configurations

The range runs wide, and the right pick depends on member thickness and the job. Head style is the first fork in the road. Wood building screws come with a countersunk head — with mill cutter and threaded tip with scraper groove — or a flange head, also with mill cutter and threaded tip. For countersunk applications, countersunk washers are available in B6, B8, and B10 sizes.

There’s also a hex-drive variant when you need it. Hexagon wood building screws come in 8x80 and 12x80 through 12x340. The mill cutter feature shows up on the larger sizes — 3.5x30, 4x30, 4.5x40, 5x40, 6x60, 8x80, and 10x100 — which means cleaner driving on the bigger fasteners where you’d otherwise fight the wood.

On working life: the assessment methods lead to the assumption of a working life of at least 50 years, though that’s a means for choosing the right product against expected service life, not a guarantee. And the steel itself earns its fire classification — the screws are made of steel classified as Euroclass A1, the reaction-to-fire class.

What You Can Fasten — and With Which Coating

WBS screws are approved for a defined list of timber and panel substrates. Step outside that scope and the rated load no longer applies.

On the structural side, they’re used in load-bearing timber connections between wood-based members, or between those members and steel members: solid timber (softwood) in strength classes C14 to C40, glued laminated timber of at least strength class GL24c, laminated veneer lumber (LVL) of softwood with screws arranged only perpendicular to the plane of the veneers, and cross-laminated timber. That LVL rule matters — set the screw across the veneer planes, not parallel to them.

For panel work, the screws connect wood-based panels to those timber members — OSB, plywood, particleboard, cement-bonded particleboard, fibreboard, and solid wood panels — with the panels arranged only on the side of the screw head.

There’s a detail that’s genuinely useful for cold-climate roof assemblies. WBS screws with an outer thread diameter of at least 6 mm are used to fix thermal insulation on top of rafters or on wood-based members in vertical façades. If you’re running rigid insulation above the deck — common where ice dams and R-value both matter — that’s the fastener doing the work.

Now the part that trips people up most: corrosion coating. The biggest selection mistake is putting an interior-grade zinc-plated screw where moisture is going to find it. Durability is only ensured if the specifications of intended use are taken into account. Match the coating to the site. Zinc-plated carbon steel belongs in controlled, dry interior conditions. For exterior, damp, coastal, or aggressive exposure, step up to stainless steel — the W-BS stainless variants are rated for use outdoors, including in industrial atmospheres and coastal areas, or in damp rooms, provided no particularly aggressive conditions are present.

In Montana terms: freeze-thaw cycling and spring moisture are hard on fasteners. Dry interior framing can run zinc-plated. Anything seeing weather, condensation, or exposed work calls for stainless.

Installation Basics

Driving technique protects the rated capacity. Run the screw perpendicular to the members and drive it home. The screw is considered installed when the head is close fitting — flush, not over-driven and stripped.

Pre-drilling depends on the wood and the screw. Screws can be driven into softwood without pre-drilling, or after pre-drilling with a diameter no larger than the inner thread diameter for the length of the threaded part. That inner-thread limit is the rule to remember — overdrill and you sacrifice withdrawal strength. Larger stainless screws and long insertions get pre-drilled, and holes in Beech LVL must always be pre-drilled. Hardwood and LVL don’t forgive a dry start the way softwood does.
