Picking the right one comes down to three decisions: match the coating to where the screw will live, match the thread and point to what it’s biting into, and size the length so it actually holds. Get those three right and the rest is just driving.

Matching Coating to the Job

This is where most buyers go wrong, and in Montana — freeze-thaw cycling, snowmelt sitting at the ground line, treated lumber everywhere — the wrong coating rusts out before the deck does.

Start with the environment. Yellow zinc is for indoor use, galvanized or coated steel suits general exterior work, and 316 stainless steel is the call for coastal or marine environments. Montana’s landlocked, so 316 stainless is a footnote here — but worth knowing it exists for constant-immersion situations.

For the bread-and-butter exterior work, polymer coatings carry the load. A proprietary multi-layer gold polymer-based corrosion-resistant finish tested to greater than 1,000-hour salt-spray resistance handles treated lumber and standard exterior duty. These are ACQ, CA-B, MCA, and MCQ treated-lumber approved, and perform well in covered decks, framing, fencing, pergolas, and general construction. That treated-lumber approval matters more than people think — modern ACQ and copper-based treated wood eats bare steel.

Black oxide is the one to be careful with. Black oxide is a conversion coating, not a heavy paint or plating, so it offers modest corrosion protection suitable for exterior applications when the screws remain under cover or are sealed with deck stain or finish after installation. The matte head looks sharp against dark composite and stained cedar — they self-countersink flush, reduce splitting, and the head disappears against charcoal composite, ipe, cedar, and black hardware. But in Montana’s wet conditions, reserve black oxide for covered or interior work. For longest life in exposed or high-moisture environments, top-coat the installed screws with the same finish used on the wood.

Thread, Point, Drive, and Length

Thread type tracks the substrate. Coarse threads handle softwood and drywall; fine threads suit hardwood or metal. Most construction screws run aggressive coarse threads for grip in framing lumber.

Length is the most common counter question, and the rule is simple. The screw should penetrate the receiving material by at least two-thirds of its length or 1 inch, whichever is greater. On thread coverage, thread length runs approximately 2/3 of the shank on lengths 6 inches and under, with full-length thread on 6-3/4 inch and longer.

For gauge and diameter, the range is wide. Common wood work lives around #9 and #10. Diameters available climb to 1/4 inch, 5/16 inch, and 3/8 inch for heavy timber, with lengths from 1-1/2 inch through 20 inches. Those heavier sizes do real structural work — these are engineered as a faster, stronger, more reliable alternative to traditional lag screws for ledger boards, joist hangers, stair treads, and general heavy timber fastening.

Others exceed ASTM C1513 and carry ICC-ES approval for structural applications. If the connection is engineered, the screw needs the published load value to match.
