How to Match the Right Fastener to Wood, Metal, and Masonry
Building MaterialsBuying screws by the bucket is how a crew keeps moving. But the wrong screw in a bulk order is an expensive mistake repeated a few thousand times. Using the right kind of screw is essential to any construction project, large or small. You need screws specifically manufactured for the material to be fastened — whether it’s concrete, wood, metal, or something else — and that will hold up for their designated use.
Four things decide the right screw: what you’re driving into, the thread, the coating, and the length. Get those right and the bulk order pays off. When purchased in bulk, companies can significantly reduce the per-unit price, leading to substantial savings, especially in large-scale projects. Order consistency matters too — many builders buy bulk screws for shops, crews, and ongoing projects where consistent sizing and finish really matter.
Start with the material you’re fastening into. That single decision narrows the field fast.
Wood. Standard wood screws fasten wood to wood in general carpentry. For decks and outdoor builds, reach for deck screws — they’re made for exterior wood jobs, especially decking and other outdoor builds. They hold well in pressure-treated lumber and stand up better when the weather keeps changing. That last part earns its keep on a Montana deck cycling through freeze-thaw all winter. When a connection needs real muscle, step up to lag screws. Lag screws are heavy-duty fasteners for wood, used when a connection needs real strength. You’ll see them on beams, posts, ledgers, and other load-bearing lumber where standard screws aren’t enough.
Metal. For steel framing, self-drilling screws skip the pilot hole. Self-drilling screws drill and tap in one motion — ideal for steel frames. On metal roofing and siding, self-piercing screws move fast: like self-drilling screws, they’re made to go in without a pilot hole. They’re often used in metal roofing and siding where speed matters and you’re fastening sheet to framing.
Concrete and masonry. Concrete screws are incredibly tough and made specifically for firm placement in concrete and masonry. They are excellent for use in heavy-duty construction when something has to be anchored to a cement wall or foundation. Many concrete screws are hardened, cut their own threads into concrete and masonry, and include drill bits.
Timber structures. For load-bearing timber connections, there’s a class of self-tapping wood building screws. CPS and WBS screws are self-tapping screws made from special carbon steel. The outer thread diameter is not less than 3.0 mm and not greater than 12.0 mm. The overall length ranges from 16 mm to 600 mm. These connect wood-based members or join wood to steel, and they cover the panel materials a framer actually uses — plywood, OSB, particleboard, fiberboards, cement-bonded particle boards, and solid-wood panels. One limit to know: these screws are used only for static and quasi-static loads.
Once the substrate’s settled, the screw’s geometry decides how well it holds and how easily it drives.
Thread. Coarse threads are typically used in soft materials like wood, as they provide excellent holding power. Fine threads are preferred in harder materials, delivering greater tensile strength. Coarse for softwoods and MDF, fine for hardwoods and metal.
Head style. Pick by the finish you need. Bugle head works for drywall and framing, oval head gives a finished look, and other head types are designed to sit flush, countersink, or spread load depending on the application. Flat and countersunk for flush, pan or truss for surface clamping, hex or washer heads for heavy structural framing.
Drive. Torx or square beats Phillips, plain and simple. The choice of drive types, such as Phillips, slotted, or Torx, can affect how easily a screw can be driven into a material and how well it resists stripping during installation.
Coating. This is where outdoor jobs live or die. Bulk screws come in several materials to match strength and environmental needs — carbon steel for general use, stainless steel for moisture-prone areas, and zinc-plated finishes for added surface protection in indoor or light outdoor applications. Stainless steel screws are often preferred in environments where corrosion resistance is essential, such as in outdoor construction or marine applications. The order of thinking: zinc-plated stays indoors and dry, hot-dipped galvanized handles general outdoor framing, stainless covers the most exposed connections.
One warning that costs people money on treated lumber: verify the coating is compatible with the specific preservative-treated timber being used. Some treatments chew through an incompatible coating and the screw fails years before the wood does.
Length isn’t guesswork. The receiving material has to grab enough of the screw. The rule: the screw should penetrate the receiving piece by at least two-thirds of its total length, or twice the thickness of the top piece — whichever gets you deeper. For anything carrying real structural load, don’t eyeball it. High-load connections may call for fasteners specified by an engineer, and the timber building screws above are rated for static and quasi-static loads only.

Bucket packs run from a few hundred to a couple thousand pieces depending on size — handy when one screw type is carrying a whole job. The longer 17-gauge lags (10, 12, and 16 inch) sell by the each, which is what you’d expect for fasteners that size.

Which coating for an outdoor deck on treated lumber? Use a corrosion-resistant option — stainless for moisture-prone and exposed spots, galvanized for general outdoor framing. The non-negotiable step is confirming the coating is rated for the specific treated lumber you’re using, since some preservatives accelerate corrosion on the wrong coating.
Why Torx instead of Phillips for bulk work? Drive type affects how easily a screw drives and how well it resists stripping during installation. Torx grips harder and cams out less, which matters when you’re sinking thousands of screws.
