How to Choose the Right Fitting

A PVC coupling joins two pipes in a straight line — for extending a run or fixing a damaged section. A tee creates a branch where one line splits off another. Both belong to the drain, waste, and vent family, and that distinction is the whole ballgame. These fittings cover sanitary drain, waste and vent, sewer and storm drainage applications, intended for use in non-pressure applications where the operating temperature will not exceed 140°F. Non-pressure. Gravity flow. That’s what they’re built for, and nothing else.

Get one thing straight before anything else. Never test with or transport/store compressed air or gas in PVC pipe or fittings. Doing so can result in explosive failures and cause severe injury or death. This is not a suggestion. DWV PVC is for water moving downhill under its own weight — not pressurized lines, not hot water systems, not air.

What DWV Fittings Are For — and What They Aren’t

DWV stands for drain, waste, and vent. These systems are essential for a building’s plumbing, removing wastewater and ensuring airflow for water movement to septic or sewer systems. They include drains for gravity-led water removal, waste sections for used water from toilets and sinks, and vents to prevent vacuum in piping and sewer gas entry into living spaces.

The temperature ceiling matters. PVC DWV fittings are not designed for hot water systems and discharge temperatures should not exceed 140°F. That’s a hard line. Run a high-temp discharge through these and you’re asking for distortion.

The couplings and tees do two different jobs. A sanitary tee is a fitting designed to connect a branch line into a vertical drain or vent line. A coupling, by contrast, just connects pipe end to pipe end. Western Building Center carries straight couplings in solvent-weld sizes from 1/2” up through 2”, plus DWV hub couplings in 1-1/2”, 2”, 3”, and 4”, and reducing couplings like 2x1.5, 3x2, and 4x3 for stepping down between sizes.

There’s also a repair coupling, built for fixing pipe already in place rather than building new. The stock list includes 2”, 3”, and 4” repair couplings for exactly that situation — cutting into an existing run and splicing back together.

On the tee side, sanitary tees run in 1-1/2”, 2”, 3”, and 4”, with reducing versions (3x1.5, 3x2, 4x2, 2x1.5) when the branch is smaller than the main. All connections are slip (hub/socket), available in standard, double with branch outlets on both sides, double with left and/or right side additional inlets, and other options.

Sizes, Standards, and Certifications

Match three things: diameter, schedule, and certification. Miss any one and you fail inspection.

DWV molded fittings come in a wide diameter range. Corrosion resistant injection molded PVC pipe fittings run IPS sizes 1-1/4” through 12”, produced to DWV dimensions, for use at temperatures up to and including 140°F. Home plumbing typically lives in the 1-1/4” to 4” range. The material itself is specified: pipe shall be manufactured from virgin rigid PVC vinyl compounds with a cell class of 12454 as identified in ASTM D1784.

Injection molded PVC DWV fittings shall conform to ASTM D2665. For the certification stamp that keeps inspectors happy, third party certifications shall be in place for fittings in compliance with NSF Standard 14, and fittings shall be certified to the Uniform Plumbing Code where applicable. Verify against your local authority having jurisdiction. Codes shift between jurisdictions.

Solvent-Weld Installation

DWV joints aren’t mechanical. They’re chemically welded. For a secure, lasting connection in PVC pipe joining, primer and solvent cement are crucial to prevent plumbing failures. Solvent cementing chemically welds two pipe surfaces together that, once cured, create an airtight seal.

It’s a two-step process. Solvent cement joints shall be made in a two-step process with primer conforming to ASTM F656 and solvent cement conforming to ASTM D2564. Use PVC-specific products — not ABS cement, not CPVC cement.

The sequence on the bench: follow safety precautions, use proper primer and PVC solvent cement for products being joined, cut pipe square, bevel and deburr, then check dry fit and measure. Then primer, then cement while the primer’s still wet.

Timing is tight. The maximum application temperature for primer is 110°F, and when applying it, plumbers should use an aggressive application to ensure that solvents are worked into the surface. The cement should be applied while the primer is still wet — within five minutes. Don’t dawdle between coats.

Support spacing keeps the system from sagging. Horizontal runs of drainage piping are to be supported at no more than 4 ft intervals, at changes in direction or elevation, and at end of branches. On vertical runs, maintain pipe in straight alignment and support at each floor level or at 10 ft intervals, whichever is less.

That last point lands hard in this part of the country. Provide proper support to piping exposed to wind, snow and ice loading, and extreme temperature swings. Montana’s freeze-thaw cycling and snow loads aren’t kind to underbuilt support. Build for movement.

PVC vs. ABS vs. CPVC

A single store may stock more than one DWV material. Knowing the trade-offs keeps you from mixing them wrong.

PVC earns its spot for good reasons. PVC pipe is a top choice for its affordability, light weight and resistance to chemicals and bacteria. It is particularly suitable for drain and vent lines due to smooth interiors, preventing scaling and facilitating waste removal.

ABS deserves a hard look in cold country. ABS pipe is notably better suited for colder climates due to its superior performance in extreme temperatures, which makes it a more prevalent choice in colder areas. Known for its black color, it’s less flexible than PVC but offers superior strength and cold resistance. One key difference at the bench: primer can be applied only to PVC and CPVC applications, not ABS pipe. ABS joins with cement alone.

CPVC fills a narrower niche. CPVC, less common in residential plumbing than PVC or ABS, excels in managing chemical waste thanks to its chlorine content, which boosts its temperature resistance and resilience against chemical solvents.

When you have to join two different materials, don’t try to weld them. Use transition couplings. Rubber-sleeve couplings with steel jackets bridge dissimilar materials — PVC to cast iron, for instance — without a chemical bond that won’t take.

One Montana caution worth repeating: the impact resistance of DWV PVC-U pipe and fittings decreases with reduction in temperature. Cold-weather handling needs a gentler touch. Drop a fitting on a frozen jobsite and it’ll crack where it wouldn’t in July.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can these fittings be used on a pressurized water line? No. PVC Schedule 40 DWV pipe and fittings are intended for use in non-pressure applications where the operating temperature will not exceed 140°F — sanitary drain, waste, vent, sewer, and storm drainage. Pressure-rated lines require different fittings entirely.

Why can’t I pressure-test a DWV system with air? Because it can kill you. Never test with or transport/store compressed air or gas in PVC pipe or fittings — doing so can result in explosive failures and cause severe injury or death. The system shall be hydrostatically tested after installation. Water, not air.

Do I need primer with PVC? Yes for PVC. To select the right primer, identify the material being joined — use a PVC-specific primer for PVC pipe. Primer can be applied only to PVC and CPVC applications, not ABS pipe. The primer preps and softens the surface for a strong weld.

How far apart should I support horizontal drain pipe? Horizontal runs of drainage piping are to be supported at no more than 4 ft intervals, at changes in direction or elevation, and at end of branches. Tighten that up further on runs exposed to snow load or temperature swings.

What’s the difference between a standard coupling and a repair coupling? A standard coupling joins two pipe ends in new work. A repair coupling is built to fix pipe already installed — you cut into an existing run and splice the repair coupling in to close it back up.

What size fittings does home plumbing use? Residential DWV generally falls in the 1-1/4” to 4” range, though injection molded PVC DWV fittings run IPS sizes 1-1/4” through 12”. Match the fitting to your existing pipe diameter and schedule, and confirm the certification meets your local code.
