A Buyer's Guide to Crosses, Traps, and Cleanouts
Building MaterialsPVC DWV pipe and fittings handle the dirty work nobody sees — the drain, waste, and vent lines that carry sewage and gray water out of a building and let sewer gas escape up through the roof. This system is for sanitary drain, waste and vent, sewer and storm drainage applications, intended for use in non-pressure applications where the operating temperature will not exceed 140°F. That last part is the whole ballgame. DWV is a gravity system. Water runs downhill, gas rises, and nothing in the line is ever under pressure.
Here’s the rule that matters most, and it’s not a suggestion. Never test with or transport/store compressed air or gas in PVC pipe or fittings. Doing so can result in explosive failures and cause severe injury or death. Some plumbers get tempted to pressure-test a drain line with a compressor. Don’t. PVC DWV is also not a hot-water material — PVC DWV fittings are not designed for hot water systems and discharge temperatures should not exceed 140°F.
The material itself earns its place for good reasons. Polyvinyl chloride is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and joined by solvent cementing, and PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. For a buried or in-wall drain line that has to last the life of the house, that corrosion resistance is the entire point.
Two pipe constructions show up in DWV work. Solid wall Schedule 40 is the rigid workhorse, and some of it carries more than one rating. The smaller sizes are dual marked to ASTM D 1785 and ASTM D 2665, while the larger diameters are triple marked to ASTM D 1785, ASTM D 2665 and ASTM F 480. Then there’s cellular core, a lighter, less expensive product strictly for non-pressure drainage. PVC Schedule 40 DWV cellular core pipe conforms to ASTM D 4396 and ASTM F 891.
The material spec is the same regardless of who molds it. The materials used in the manufacture of the fittings are rigid Poly(Vinyl Chloride) Type 1 PVC compound having a Cell Classification of 12454 per ASTM D1784, also formerly known as Type I, Grade I PVC, PVC 1120.

Third party certifications should be in place for fittings in compliance with NSF Standard 14, and fittings should be certified to the Uniform Plumbing Code where applicable. Worth verifying US manufacturing too — pipe fittings manufactured to these specs are made in the United States of America.
Solid wall pipe runs a wide size range. Schedule 40 DWV pipe is offered from 1-1/4 inch up through 16 inch. Most residential and light-commercial DWV work lives in the smaller end of that range — 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch for fixture drains and traps, 3 inch and 4 inch for the main building drain and stacks.
This is where buyers grab the wrong part most often. Three fitting families do most of the work, and they’re not interchangeable.
P-traps are the curved fitting under every sink and fixture. The P-trap provides a water seal so that wastewater will automatically be trapped in the arc of the configuration, thereby preventing unwanted gases from entering the household environment. That water seal is doing a real job — it’s the only thing standing between living space and the sewer. The version with a built-in cleanout adds a service access point. The P-Trap with hub x hub x cleanout with plug connection provides a means for clearing potential clogs. Western Building Center carries P-traps in the common residential sizes — 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch — both plain and with an integrated cleanout, plus an adjustable P-trap with union for tight retrofit work where the existing pipe doesn’t line up perfectly. For low-clearance situations, a low-profile P-trap exists; it features a compact design ideal for tight spaces in drain, waste, and vent systems.
Cleanouts give you a way back into the line when something clogs. A cleanout body with threaded plug or a cleanout tee lets a snake or auger reach the blockage without cutting pipe. The stock list runs the full range here — cleanout bodies and threaded cleanout plugs in 1-1/2, 2, 3, and 4 inch, with both FIP (female threaded) and spigot inlets. Put one anywhere a drain changes direction sharply or runs long enough to invite trouble.
Crosses join four runs at one junction. The DWV cross joins four pipes within a system, featuring one outlet and three inlets or vice versa. A sanitary cross with a side inlet adds branch connections in configurations like 3 inch x 3 inch x 3 inch x 2 inch and 3 inch x 3 inch x 2 inch x 2 inch.
The connection type on the end of each fitting is what trips people up. The descriptions you’ll see are H for Hub, Sp for Spigot (pipe O.D.), SJ for Slip Joint, MPT for Male Pipe Thread, and FPT for Female Pipe Thread. A hub end takes a solvent-weld socket joint; a slip joint takes a compression-style nut; a threaded end screws on. Match the end type to whatever you’re tying into before you buy, not at the truck.
PVC DWV gets joined one correct way, and threading the pipe itself isn’t it. Solvent cement joints shall be made in a two-step process with primer conforming to ASTM F 656 and solvent cement conforming to ASTM D 2564. Primer first, then cement — that two-step welds the pipe and fitting into a single piece of plastic. The basic sequence is straightforward. Use proper primer and PVC solvent cement for the products being joined, cut pipe square, bevel and deburr, and check the dry fit.
Slope and support are what make the line drain and pass inspection. All 90° openings pitch 1/4 inch per foot, with vent fittings the exception. On hangers, the rule is tight: horizontal runs of drainage piping are supported at no more than 4 ft intervals, at changes in direction or elevation, and at end of branches; on vertical runs, maintain the pipe in straight alignment and support at each floor level or at 10 ft intervals, whichever is less.
That support spec matters more here than in milder country. Provide proper support to piping exposed to wind, snow and ice loading, and extreme temperature swings. PVC moves with the thermometer, and Montana hands a drain line a wide swing every year. Hangers and supports are to be installed in such a manner as to allow free movement of the piping caused by thermal expansion and contraction, with all piping components aligned properly without strain. A line cinched down hard at every hanger will fight that movement and eventually crack.
A few more cautions worth respecting. The system must be protected from chemical agents, fire-stopping materials, thread sealant, plasticized-vinyl products or other aggressive chemical agents not compatible with PVC compounds. And when the whole assembly is done, the system shall be hydrostatically tested after installation — water, never air.
Sizing isn’t guesswork, and it isn’t your call alone. Installation shall comply with all applicable plumbing, fire, and building code requirements. Drain and vent sizing comes from fixture unit counts in your local plumbing code, so the authority having jurisdiction has the final say on diameters. One design rule is baked into the spec sheets: all systems shall utilize a separate waste and vent system.
When you pull a fitting off the shelf, work through it in this order: confirm the diameter your code calls for, confirm the connection type on every end matches what you’re joining to, and verify the NSF 14 and ASTM markings are on the part. Get those three right and the rest of the install goes smooth.
