What They Are and How to Choose
Building MaterialsA galvanized bushing does one job. It connects two pipes of different diameters. It’s threaded on both the inside and outside, allowing it to fit into a larger fitting while accommodating a smaller pipe. That’s the part most people get wrong at the counter — they reach for a bushing when they mean a reducer, or the other way around.
Here’s the distinction. A bushing threads inside a larger fitting to shrink its opening — female on the outside, male feeding the smaller pipe. A reducer, by contrast, is a standalone fitting that connects different pipe sizes directly. Bushings earn their keep in tight maintenance work and small-scale pipeline adjustments — pipe nipples extend connections between fittings, while bushings reduce pipe size.
The galvanizing matters as much as the shape. These fittings are impregnated with a protective zinc coating that protects against rust, corrosion, and mineral buildup and withstands wet conditions. In Montana, where supply runs cross frost-heaved ground and sit through long wet springs, that zinc is what keeps threads from seizing and rusting at the ground line.
This is the decision that actually matters. Get it wrong and you’ve got a safety problem, not just a leak.
Galvanized is the water specialist. A galvanized iron fitting is the undisputed champion of water-carrying systems. Because water contains dissolved oxygen, raw iron will begin to oxidize almost immediately upon contact. The “Sacrificial Anode” effect of zinc extends the life-cycle of water systems — and that protection holds up even after a wrench scratches the surface. The zinc acts as a sacrificial anode, protecting the iron even if the surface is scratched.
That’s why galvanized is the standard for three jobs: potable water, fire fighting pipe fitting networks, and outdoor exposure. Fire-protection lines are a perfect fit because in a fire fighting pipe fitting network, pipes often sit stagnant for years. Stagnant water is exactly where bare steel pits out — relevant for rural properties running long, rarely-used supply lines.
Now the hard rule. Never put galvanized on a gas line. The zinc coating can “spall” — flake off — traveling downstream to clog burners and pilot orifices, a critical safety risk. For natural gas and propane, black iron is the answer. Black iron fittings are the preferred, cost-effective choice for closed-loop systems like natural gas, propane, and high-temperature steam where oxygen is absent. The logic is simple: once installed in a closed-loop gas or oil system where oxygen is absent, the fluid itself often provides the internal corrosion protection.

One visual tell if you’re sorting a mixed bin: galvanized appears silver, bright gray, or sometimes has a “spangled” crystalline texture, while black appears matte black or dark charcoal and often feels slightly oily because of its protective varnish.
Bushings travel with company. The common galvanized fitting shapes include bushings, elbows, couplings, caps, tees, unions, and hex plugs. Each handles one task: some change direction, some create branches, some reduce pipe size, and others stop the flow or allow easy disassembly.
Western Building Center stocks galvanized hex bushings across a practical range of reductions — from a 1/4” male × 1/8” female on the small end up to a 2” male × 1-1/2” female, with the common 1/2 × 3/8, 3/4 × 1/2, and 1 × 3/4 steps in between. Hex-body bushings give a wrench something to grab, which matters when you’re fighting an older line.
On pressure and size, the threaded malleable-iron family runs up to 150 PSI, with common sizes spanning roughly 1/2” to 6” depending on the fitting.
Threads are where leaks start. In North America you’re working with NPT. NPT is the abbreviation of National (American) Pipe Thread — the American standard 60-degree tapered pipe thread used in North America. The European and Commonwealth standard, BSPT, uses a 55-degree sealing angle. Don’t mix them. Threaded connections include NPT or BSPT and are sealed with PTFE tape. Confirm the standard before you buy or you’ll chase a leak you can’t tighten out.
If you’re buying galvanized for the coating, get the right galvanizing. Hot-dip galvanizing produces a thicker zinc layer that reacts with the iron matrix at high temperatures, so it bonds firmly and does not readily come off. Electro-galvanizing leaves a thin layer that is easy to fall off. For water and outdoor work, hot-dip is the call.
Sealing threaded galvanized is straightforward. Cover the threads with pipe dope or wrap them with PTFE tape to establish a leak-proof connection, then once hand-tight, use one pipe wrench to keep the pipe steady and another to tighten the fitting.
Don’t crank it. Galvanized steel is brittle compared to malleable iron or brass — over-tightening a bushing can crack the fitting, leading to immediate flooding.
The real trap is mixing metals. Tie copper straight to galvanized and you start a battery. When these two metals touch in the presence of water, they create a galvanic corrosion effect — the zinc coating sacrifices itself to protect the copper, leading to rapid rusting and eventual failure of the steel pipe. Code requires you break that circuit. Joints between copper pipe or tubing and galvanized steel pipe shall be made with a copper-alloy or dielectric fitting — the copper soldered to the fitting, and the fitting screwed to the threaded pipe.
When the sizes also change, there’s no single magic part. Instead of hunting for a non-existent single piece, professionals build a small assembly. A typical copper-to-galvanized transition runs:

One sealant warning on that dielectric union: never use oil-based pipe dope on the plastic components of a dielectric union, as it can degrade the rubber gasket.
Last point — avoid welding galvanized. When welding galvanized steel, the zinc coating vaporizes and forms zinc oxide fumes that can be hazardous if inhaled. It also wrecks the corrosion protection. Remove the zinc coating in the weld area to prevent porosity, and after welding apply a zinc-rich primer or paint to protect the exposed steel.
