How to Pick the Right Angle, Size, and Thread

The buying decision comes down to three things: the angle, the size, and the thread. Get any one wrong and you’ve got a leak — or worse on a gas line. Match all three to your existing pipe and you get a joint that holds for decades.
The base material is malleable iron — made from malleable cast iron EN-GJMB-350-10, a material composition selected for its robustness and resilience. On its own, iron rusts. The zinc is the difference.
Not all galvanizing is equal, and this matters when you’re buying. Galvanized malleable fittings undergo hot-dip galvanizing for corrosion resistance. This involves cleaning, dipping in molten zinc, and forming a protective alloy layer. Compare that to the cheaper route: galvanized steel fittings undergo cold galvanizing or electro-galvanizing, with a thin zinc layer of 10-50g/m2 using electrolysis, resulting in weak corrosion resistance. Hot-dip is the one you want on anything buried or exposed.
On a quality hot-dip elbow, the galvanized finish is applied with a minimum thickness of 70 μm. This zinc layer significantly extends the life of the fitting, making it ideally suited for environments exposed to moisture or corrosive agents — a durable solution for installations that require minimal maintenance, whether buried or exposed to the elements.
The threads come last, and that’s by design. Threads are precisely cut post-galvanization for a secure, leak-proof connection. The fitting is built from high-quality malleable iron, providing durability and resistance to wear in various environments. Cut the threads after dipping and you keep crisp, sealing threads instead of zinc-clogged ones.
For Montana, the cold-weather rating is the number that counts. In regular use, the fittings are suitable for service at temperatures as low as -20°C. That’s the kind of buried irrigation or exposed run that has to survive a hard winter.
Start with the angle. Galvanized elbows are available in two different angles, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. This type of fitting is typically used for water flow, and the connection is directly connected to the pipe. A 90° makes a hard turn; a 45° eases it. Pick based on how sharp a direction change your layout needs.
Then there’s the street elbow, which trips up a lot of people. There are also 45-degree and 90-degree street elbows. Unlike regular elbows, street elbows are attached to galvanized fittings rather than the pipe itself, and are also used to change the direction of the pipe. A regular elbow has female threads on both ends. A street elbow has one male end so it threads straight into another fitting — saves you a nipple.

If you’ve got a long sweeping run where flow matters — think water supply or a pressurized line — the large-radius 90° is worth knowing about. The wide angle allows for a smoother curvature for the flow of fluids or gases, reducing pressure drops and turbulence in the piping.

Size is nominal pipe size, not the actual outside diameter. Elbows commonly run 1/2” to 4” in the everyday catalog range, though the broader family spans 1/8” up to 6”. Reducing elbows pair two sizes — 3/4”x1/2” and 1”x3/4” are typical combinations.
Here’s where joints leak: thread mismatch. Threaded connections include NPT (American Standard Threads) or BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) and are sealed with PTFE tape. In the US, NPT is the standard. Most domestic galvanized fittings are Class 150 and NPT-sized. The BSP and BSPT fittings you’ll see in European and Australian catalogs are a different thread form — mix them with NPT and you won’t get a seal. Match your fitting thread to your pipe thread, full stop.
Pressure and pull strength back up the spec. A galvanized elbow is rated up to 150 PSI for plumbing, gas systems, and fire protection. Quality fittings carry recognizable certifications worth looking for: UL Certified; No Lead, NSF/ANSI 372 and NSF/ANSI 61; ISO 7-1; ISO 49; ASTM A153; ASME/ANSI B16.3; ANSI/ASTM A197. The NSF marks are the ones to verify on anything carrying drinking water — they mean no-lead and potable-safe.
Galvanized elbows show up across a wide range of work. Compared with ordinary iron fittings, galvanized pipe fittings are more durable and reliable in environments exposed to moisture or chemicals. They are widely used in residential plumbing, construction projects, agriculture irrigation, oil and gas pipelines, and fire protection systems. On rural Montana property, that means irrigation lines and fire-protection runs sit right in the wheelhouse — seasonal, outdoor, and often buried.
Two installation rules are non-negotiable.
First, seal the threads right. The female threads are on the inside of the fitting; the male threads are on the outside and screw into the female threads, sealed with PTFE tape. Wrap the male threads — not the female — and don’t over-tighten. Cranking past snug cracks malleable iron and strips the seal.
Second, and this one’s a safety line: never weld galvanized. Heating that zinc coating releases toxic fumes and burns off the corrosion protection you paid for. If your design calls for welding, you’re using the wrong fitting.
What’s the difference between a regular elbow and a street elbow? A regular elbow has female threads on both ends, so it connects to two lengths of pipe. A street elbow has one male end and one female end, letting it thread directly into another fitting without a nipple in between. Street elbows are attached to galvanized fittings rather than the pipe itself. Both change pipe direction.

Do I need thread sealant on a galvanized elbow? Yes. Threaded galvanized connections are sealed with PTFE tape. Wrap the male threads, thread it together, and stop at snug — over-tightening cracks the iron.
Are galvanized elbows safe for drinking water? Look for the no-lead certifications. Quality fittings carry NSF/ANSI 372 and NSF/ANSI 61 marks, which confirm they’re rated for potable water.
