How to Pick the Right Size, Schedule, and Thread

That’s the whole point. The coating takes the hit so the steel keeps doing its job, which is why these turn up in plumbing, fire protection, HVAC, and outdoor utility lines.

For a contractor or rancher running water lines, the choice comes down to three things: schedule, size, and thread standard. Get those right and the joint holds. Get them wrong and you’re chasing leaks.
A nipple connects two female threaded fittings. The simplest version is the close nipple. A nipple is a short piece of pipe with male pipe threads at both ends, and the length is specified by the overall length including the threads. A ‘close nipple’ has no unthreaded area and is virtually unexposed when connected to two female fittings. That’s the part you reach for in tight spaces where two fittings need to meet with nothing showing between them.
The material itself does the heavy lifting in a wet or buried run. Galvanized nipples are made from zinc-coated steel, and they are commonly used for outdoor and industrial applications. That zinc layer is what keeps the rust off through a Montana winter where the ground stays wet for weeks during snowmelt.
These connectors are built to last through the seasons. Galvanized finishes greatly enhance resistance to corrosion, abrasions, and the like, so the components keep working whether there’s summer heat or winter chill. That four-season durability is exactly why galvanized shows up in yard hydrant assemblies on rural and ranch properties.
Schedule 40 vs Schedule 80. Schedule is wall thickness. Schedule 40 is the workhorse for residential and light commercial water, air, and gas. Schedule 80 carries thicker walls for higher pressure or heat. The rule that keeps you out of trouble: never drop your nipple’s schedule below the schedule of the pipe it’s joining. A thinner-walled connector in a heavier-walled run is a failure point waiting to happen.
Size. Galvanized nipples run from the smallest fractional sizes up through 2 inches and larger, in lengths from close on up. Western Building Center carries a broad spread of these. The lineup runs from small bore on up — items like a 1/8 x 2”, a 1/4 x close, a 3/8 x 1-1/2”, a range of 1/2” nipples from close through 12”, 3/4” sizes from 2” through 12”, a 1 x close, a 1-1/2 x 8”, and a 2 x 8”. Length is measured end to end, threads included, so order to the actual gap you need to fill.
Thread standard. This is the hidden leak-maker. NPT is standard in North America, while BSPT is common elsewhere — mixing them causes leaks. NPT threads are tapered, which is how they seal as they tighten. Quality galvanized fittings are compliant with ASTM A197, ASME B16.3, and B1.20.1 for material, dimensions, and threading. Match both the size and the thread standard to your fittings and you won’t be re-cutting a joint that won’t seal.

Galvanized fits a clear middle ground. It’s the right call for plumbing, fire protection, HVAC, compressed air, and outdoor utility runs. The galvanized finish helps resist rust in water, air, and steam applications. For a yard hydrant assembly that has to survive year-round on a rural property, it’s hard to beat.
The hard limit is heat. Skip galvanized on steam or high-heat lines above roughly 400°F — the zinc coating degrades and flakes. Worth flagging for anyone tying into a boiler or steam system. That’s the wrong material for the job.
Most galvanized leaks trace back to the install, not the part. Before you start, inspect the threads for rust or damage. Use PTFE tape or a proper pipe joint compound, and don’t over-tighten — cranking it past snug doesn’t seal better, it cracks fittings.
If you cut a nipple on site, the raw steel at the cut end is no longer protected. Use a dedicated pipe cutter, ream the burr, and hit the exposed steel with a zinc-rich primer. Skip that step on a buried or outdoor line and that bare end will be the first thing to rust through.
One thing you never do: don’t weld galvanized. The heat releases toxic zinc fumes and destroys the protective coating that’s the entire reason you bought galvanized in the first place.
What’s a close nipple for? A close nipple is fully threaded end to end with no smooth section in the middle. A close nipple has no unthreaded area and is virtually unexposed when connected to two female fittings. Use it where two fittings need to join in the tightest possible space.
How is nipple length measured? End to end, threads included. The length of the nipple is specified by the overall length including the threads. Measure the actual gap you need to bridge and order to that.
Can I mix NPT and BSPT threads? No. NPT is standard in North America, while BSPT is common elsewhere; mixing them causes leaks. Imported fittings sometimes carry BSPT threads — confirm the standard before you assemble.
Why not just weld a galvanized joint? Welding galvanized releases toxic zinc fumes and burns off the protective coating. Thread it, don’t weld it.
Is galvanized okay for a high-heat or steam line? Not above about 400°F. The zinc breaks down and flakes at high heat, so a boiler or steam tie-in needs a different material.
Do I need to do anything special after cutting a nipple? Yes. Cutting exposes raw steel that has no zinc protection. Ream the end, then apply a zinc-rich primer to the cut — especially important on buried or outdoor lines that see Montana’s freeze-thaw and wet ground.
