How to Pick the Right One
Building MaterialsIf you’re joining cast iron DWV pipe, two things matter more than anything else. Match the coupling’s duty rating to the job, and torque the bands to spec. Get those wrong and you leak. For the hardware that supports the run — straps and clamps — size by the pipe’s actual outside diameter, not the nominal trade size. That’s the whole game.
No-hub couplings are the modern way to join hubless cast iron soil pipe. They connect no-hub cast iron pipe, replacing the less-efficient hub and spigot. No molten lead, no oakum, no caulking a bell joint. Shielded couplings connect cast iron hubless soil pipe and fittings in sanitary and drain waste and vent applications, for non-pressure, gravity flow applications only. Drain, waste, vent — gravity work. Not pressure pipe.
Every shielded no-hub coupling is built from three parts. Hubless couplings that fall under this standard are composed of three main elements, all working together to provide a positive, reliable, corrosion-resistant seal. There’s a stainless corrugated shield, stainless clamps, and a rubber gasket. The coupling sleeve or gasket is housed inside a 301 stainless steel corrugated shield. Depending on the size of the shield, two or four 301 stainless steel clamps surround the shield and provide the sealing force. The gasket does the sealing, the shield transfers clamp load to the gasket, and the clamps supply the squeeze.
The standard ones carry the codes everybody recognizes. Standard no-hub couplings are designed for an installation torque of 60 inch-pounds for a proper seal. The entire assembly is corrosion resistant and is allowed by every model code in the US for both above and below grade installation. The gasket has limits worth knowing: the gasket is made from a properly vulcanized virgin compound in compliance with ASTM C564 (neoprene). Neoprene has a maximum operating temperature of 212°F and has a maximum joint deflection of 5 degrees.
This is the decision that matters. The grade sets the clamp count, the torque spec, and how rigid the finished joint is.
A standard coupling does most residential and light commercial work. Standard 301 stainless steel clamps and 5/16-inch hex-head 305 screws provide the sealing force needed for a secure fit. Couplings 1 1/2 inches through 4 inches use two clamps; 5-inch through 10-inch couplings use four clamps.
Step up to medium and heavy duty when the joint needs to stay put under stress. Medium- and heavy-duty couplings have more clamps and yield increased surface-bearing contact between the coupling and the pipe or fittings. This inhibits movement and results in a more uniformly rigid joint. The color coding makes inspections fast — the distinctive yellow shield quickly identifies the Heavy-Duty MD Couplings and makes it easier for inspectors. The 5/16” hex-head screw applies 80 in-lbs of installation torque to the band/shield assembly. Green shields run the same install torque with heavier hardware: a 3/8” hex-head screw applies 80 in-lbs of installation torque, boasts an ultimate torque rating exceeding 100 in-lbs, and heavier gauge stainless steel.
One thing to understand about the standards. Standard hubless couplings are manufactured to CISPI 310 and ASTM C1277, while the medium- and heavy-duty couplings are manufactured to ASTM C1540.
The big-diameter couplings are their own animal. The 12” & 15” couplings use 6 clamps, a 5/8” clamp band, and a 3/8” hex head screw, with an installation torque of 120 in-lbs and ultimate torque of 150 in-lbs.
For high-risk buildings — places where a blockage could push hard on a joint — heavy-duty earns its keep. Clamp-All is third-party tested to Factory Mutual FM 1680 Class I at 15 PSI and conforms to the ASTM A-888 standard for all storm and sanitary DWV piping systems. Here’s where good plumbers lose joints. Nominal pipe size is not the diameter the coupling has to grip. Always size based on the pipe’s actual outside diameter, not its nominal trade size, as dimensions vary by material. A few common ones to keep in your head: 1-1/2” pipe runs 1-5/8” o.d., 2” runs 2-3/8” o.d., 3” runs 3-3/8” o.d., and 4” runs 4-3/8” o.d.
Need to step down? Reducing couplings handle that. Reducing options connect 2” to 1.5”, 3” to 2”, 4” to 2”, and 4” to 3”. Crossing materials — cast iron to copper, or PVC into a cast iron line — has its own answers. There’s a 2” CI x 1-1/2” copper coupling built for that transition. And for plastic into cast iron, the no-hub couplings are lightweight and can be used to connect plastic, steel or cast iron pipe for low pressure drainage. A PVC adapter handles the diameter mismatch: the PVC No-Hub Adapter adapts PVC plastic schedule 40 pipe to match cast-iron pipe diameter — the hub end glues over the pipe, the opposite end fits the no-hub coupling, and it keeps the no-hub coupling inner neoprene gasket from over stretching.
Western Building Center carries PVC no-hub couplings in 1½”, 3”, and 4”. For supporting and anchoring runs, the lineup includes galvanized pipe strap in ½”, ¾”, 1”, 1¼”, 1½”, and 2”, plastic hanger strap, and a wide range of stainless hose clamps.
A word on strap material. Use cushioned (elastomeric-lined) clamps for vibration control or to prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals, like steel straps on copper pipe. For outdoor or harsh chemical environments, choose stainless steel (grade 304 or 316) to prevent rust. Moist soil and damp crawlspaces are exactly where that matters. Spacing isn’t a guess either — determine support spacing based on your local building code and load requirements.
Torque is the difference between a joint that lasts and one that calls you back. Under-torque and it weeps. Crank it down past spec and you can crush the gasket. Use the right wrench for the grade — a Seekonk torque wrench pre-set to 60 in-lbs with a .3125” hex head screw for standard couplings. The no-hub torque wrench measures torque when turned clockwise and ratchets when turned counterclockwise — when the shielded band screw is tightened to the correct torque, the wrench ratchets so the handle keeps turning but the drive socket will not. That ratchet click is your signal you’ve hit spec.
Match the torque to the grade: 60 in-lbs standard, 80 in-lbs for medium and heavy, 120 in-lbs on the 12” and 15”. Then set the pipe square and let the coupling do its job. The interlocking design centers the sleeve within the housing for easy installation and stability. Seat the pipe without forcing it and tighten the bands evenly.
One hard line worth remembering. A soft rubber repair coupling is not a shielded no-hub. No-hub couplings may substitute for flexible rubber couplings only when sizes match and installation is above ground. Don’t swap one for the other above grade without checking that.
Why does the coupling list a pipe size and a different outside diameter? Because nominal trade size isn’t the dimension the coupling grips. Always size based on the pipe’s actual outside diameter, not its nominal trade size, as dimensions vary by material. A 2” pipe measures about 2-3/8” on the outside, a 4” measures about 4-3/8”. Fit the OD and you fit the gasket.
What’s the difference between standard and heavy-duty no-hub couplings? Clamp count, torque, and rigidity. The heavier grades carry yellow or green shields so an inspector can spot them at a glance.
Can no-hub couplings go underground? Yes. Shielded couplings are recommended for above and underground installations. The stainless components hold up in tough ground — stainless steel components resist corrosion in poorly aerated/moist soils, contaminated ground conditions, and chloride, sulfates or bicarbonates in ground water.
How hot can these joints get? The gasket sets the ceiling. Neoprene has a maximum operating temperature of 212°F and a maximum joint deflection of 5 degrees. Standard DWV waste and vent stays well under that.
Do I really need a torque wrench? For shielded no-hub work, yes. The whole seal depends on hitting the right band tension. When the shielded band screw is tightened to the correct torque, the wrench ratchets so the handle will continue to turn but the drive socket will not. That’s how you know you’re at spec without guessing — and guessing is how joints leak.
What strap should I use on copper? Not a bare steel one. Use cushioned (elastomeric-lined) clamps to prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals, like steel straps on copper pipe. For wet or outdoor spots, choose stainless steel grade 304 or 316 to prevent rust.
