How to Pick the Right Type, Coating, and Length
Building MaterialsA construction screw is a threaded wood-to-wood fastener built for framing, decking, drywall, and remodeling. The professional-grade versions provide a faster drive for improved productivity, and typical applications include general framing, remodeling, decking topboards and structural framing — used in wood, particle-board, plastic, cement fiber board, wood decking, composite decking and melamine. Sounds simple. It isn’t.
Picking the right screw is a four-part decision: failure mode, coating, geometry, and length. Get any one wrong and you’ve either got a corroded joint in three winters or a structural connection that won’t hold. Here’s how a contractor or serious DIY builder works through it.
The four questions, in order: How will it fail — corrosion, shear, or pullout? What coating matches the environment? Does the thread, head, and drive fit the job? And is it long enough to grab the receiving material? Answer those and the right screw picks itself.
Type matters first. Drywall screws hang gypsum to studs. Self-drilling screws bite into metal. Structural screws carry load. Multi-purpose screws do a little of everything.
Drywall screws are the workhorse for interior board. A #6 x 1-1/4 in bugle-head coarse-thread sharp-point drywall screw is a hand-drive fastener rated for interior drywall, coated in black phosphate for corrosion resistance and mud adhesion — the right screw to hang gypsum on wood studs. The black phosphate coating conforms to ASTM C1002, and the sharp point with aggressive threads gives smooth installation.
Self-drilling screws — Tek-style — drill and thread in one shot, no pilot hole. A #12 x 1-1/2” hex 5/16” drive self-drilling screw with a neoprene bonded washer is built for metal-building applications where moisture needs to be sealed out. That neoprene washer is the whole point on a metal roof or wall — it seals the penetration against water.
Structural wood screws are a different animal. The WS-series is a self-drilling screw used for numerous framing applications, featuring a reverse locking serration on the bottom of the head to help prevent over-tightening against a steel plate, with a head stamp for easy inspection. No predrilling is required, it’s a 1/4” diameter multi-purpose structural wood screw, and factored resistance values are published in accordance with CSA O86-14. That published load value is what separates a structural screw from a general-purpose one. For safety-critical framing, you need it.
Multi-purpose screws split the difference. The R4 multi-purpose framing and decking screw gives a faster drive for improved productivity — meant to frame with ease and confidence.
Coating is a longevity and code issue. Indoor and dry? Zinc-plated does the job. Gold zinc interior general-purpose screws are a cost-effective choice for non-structural building applications around the home and job site. But that interior coating has no business outdoors or in treated lumber.
For exterior work and pressure-treated lumber — every Montana deck, every outdoor frame — step up. The structural WS-series comes in three finishes for exactly this reason: Yellow Zinc, Hot-Dip Galvanized, and Gold Coat, covering both interior and exterior coatings. Hot-dip galvanized is the exterior answer. Treated lumber and freeze-thaw moisture eat plain zinc alive. Don’t make that mistake on a deck that has to survive a decade of snowmelt sitting at the ground line.
Geometry drives holding power and finish. Three things: thread, head, drive.
Coarse threads grab softwood. The SPF and Douglas fir framing used across Montana is softwood, so coarse is usually the call. Coarse threads speed drilling and provide excellent staying power in both soft and harder wood substrates.
Head style follows load and finish. A bugle head countersinks easily and creates a strong hold — flush finish, clean look. Hex washer heads handle high torque and the structural and metal connections, often with that sealing washer for outdoor metal work.
Drive style decides how much grief you get. Star (six-lobe) drive resists cam-out and takes more torque — T-25 Torx is the structural and deck favorite. A #2 Phillips drive offers enhanced grip during installation and shows up on drywall and general-purpose screws. And the point: a Type-17 Zip-Tip self-starts in lumber without pre-drilling — a real time-saver on a long framing run.
Length is about engagement. The working rule: the screw should reach into the receiving material by at least an inch, or twice the thickness of the top piece — whichever is greater. Too short and there’s nothing holding the joint together.
For structural connections, you don’t guess — you read the load table. The WS-series runs from 1/4 x 1-1/2 in up to 1/4 x 8 in, with factored shear resistance values published for different lumber species like SPF and Douglas fir, in both pounds and kilonewtons. A few anchor points from that table:

That’s the difference between a fastener with a number behind it and one without. Those WS factored resistance values follow CSA O86-14 Clause 12.11. Montana snow loads make that documentation matter on framing connections.
Driving them. Seat the head flush — no more. Over-torque and you strip the wood fibers, which kills holding power. For structural self-drillers the instructions are specific: install using a low-speed clutch drill with a 3/8” hex head driver, keep the washer head flat to the surface so the serrations oppose turning and release the clutch, and don’t over-tighten. Angle matters too. Installing the screw at an angle introduces bending and tension forces if the head isn’t flat on the bearing surface — keep the fastener perpendicular to the plane of the side plate.

What coating should go on a deck or outdoor framing? Hot-dip galvanized or stainless. Plain zinc-plated screws are fine indoors but corrode fast in pressure-treated lumber and moisture. Structural wood screws come in hot-dip galvanized specifically for exterior use, alongside interior yellow zinc and gold-coat finishes.
Coarse thread or fine thread? Coarse for softwood. The SPF and Douglas fir used in most framing holds coarse threads better — they speed drilling and give strong staying power in soft and hard wood alike.
Do drywall screws meet a standard? Yes. The coarse-thread black-phosphate drywall screws conform to ASTM C1002, with the phosphate coating helping mud and paint adhesion when you finish the board.
When do I need a screw with a published load value? For safety-critical framing connections. Structural wood screws like the WS-series publish factored shear resistance by lumber species under CSA O86. General-purpose interior screws are made for non-structural work and don’t carry those numbers.
Why a star drive over Phillips? Star (Torx) drive takes more torque and resists cam-out, which is why it’s standard on deck and structural screws. Phillips is common on drywall and general-purpose screws where driving loads are lighter.
What length do I need? Enough to penetrate the receiving material by at least an inch, or twice the thickness of the top piece — whichever is greater. For structural work, confirm against the published load table for your screw and lumber species.
