It meets and exceeds IRC requirements universally, and Select Structural costs 2-3 times more while exceeding the needs of most frames. Save the upper grades for beams and headers carrying real load. For studs, joists, and rafters, No. 2 does the job and protects the budget.

Here’s why DF-L earns its spot at the top of the framing pile. Valued for its dimensional stability and high specific gravity, this species offers superior fastener holding along with a high strength-to-weight ratio. Douglas Fir-Larch has the highest Modulus of Elasticity value of all North American tree species, making it an ideal choice for truss and roof applications. That stiffness matters in this country. Snow piles up on Montana roofs, and a stiffer board sags less under that load. Modulus of elasticity for DF-L hits 1.8 to 2.0 million psi.

One thing to keep straight: a nominal 2x4 doesn’t measure 2 by 4. It’s 1.5 by 3.5 inches, surfaced down from the rough cut. And “Fir-Larch” is a species group — Douglas Fir-Larch combines Douglas Fir and Western Larch. DF-L is sourced from the Pacific Northwest, with much of the supply coming out of BC Interior mills — the natural supply region feeding Montana yards.

Reading the Stamp and Checking Moisture

Dry interior winters and seasonal humidity swings will move green lumber around. KD19 (19% max moisture) prevents shrink and cup; green lumber risks warping. Use kiln-dried lumber with moisture content around 19% or less to minimize shrink and warping. Spacing and load-sharing drive the structural math. Stud spacing runs 16 to 24 inches on center, and No. 2 DF-L handles 10-20 psf live loads as standard. Push past 24 inches and you lose it — for wider spacing, the Fb values shall be reduced 13%.

For roof framing in snow country, the span tables give you a break worth knowing. Duration of load factors run from 1.00 to 1.25. Ground snow loads must be converted to design snow loads per building code provisions before using span tables. Run your local design snow load — not the ground load — through the table before sizing rafters.

Storage keeps good lumber good. Stack flat on stickers, tarp loosely for airflow, and elevate off the ground. Use within 6 months of kiln-drying. Lumber stored flat on the dirt under a tight tarp traps moisture and turns straight boards into pretzels by spring.

Where framing meets concrete — basement walls, slab edges — moisture migrates up into the wood. Treated bottom plates fend off moisture in basements. That’s standard practice anywhere the freeze-thaw cycle and ground moisture meet your framing.

DF-L vs. SPF and Hem-Fir — Matching Species to Budget

DF-L is the premium structural pick, but it’s not the only board that frames a house. The question is how much stiffness and strength the job actually demands.

Hem-Fir suits the West Coast; Spruce-Pine-Fir works for light framing but has lower stiffness. The specific gravity numbers show the gap: DF-L sits at 0.49, Hem-Fir at 0.43, and SPF at 0.36. Higher specific gravity means better fastener holding and more strength per pound. Bending values follow the same order — Select Structural base bending stress runs 1,350 psi for Douglas Fir-Larch, 1,200 psi for Hem-Fir, and 1,250 psi for Spruce-Pine-Fir.

The practical read: running SPF in high-wind conditions is risky. For load-bearing walls, longer spans, and roof members carrying snow, DF-L’s stiffness pays off. For light, non-critical framing, a lighter species is acceptable and easier to handle. Whatever you pick, always verify stamps — ungraded lumber is a liability.
