How to Pick the Right Grade and Length

A 2x6 is the framing member you’ll reach for constantly — wall studs, floor joists, rafters, deck framing. The species matters as much as the size. Douglas Fir is often the standard against which all other framing species are measured. When it’s grouped with Western Larch into the DF-L structural species, you get the stiffest commonly available softwood on the continent.

Here’s the decision that actually counts: grade. A 2x6 Douglas Fir-Larch #2 at 16 inches on center spans 9 feet 9 inches under standard residential loads — that’s the most common floor joist combination. Most jobs call for #2. Upgrade to Select Structural only when the span demands it, and never drop to #3 for anything carrying load. Get that right and the rest is detail.

Why DF-L Is the Framing Benchmark

Douglas Fir and Western Larch get combined into one structural group for good reason. In the Inland Region, east of the crest of the Cascade Mountains, Douglas Fir and Western Larch often grow in intermixed stands, and coastal and inland species share similar structural performance characteristics, so they’re often combined in dimension lumber structural products. That’s the Northern Rockies — the same country these stores sit in.

The stiffness number is what sets it apart. This species combination has the highest modulus of elasticity (MOE or E) value — the stiffness factor — of all North American softwoods. Stiffness is what keeps a floor from feeling bouncy. In strength properties, DF-L has the highest ratings of any Western softwood for fiber stress in bending, tension parallel to grain, horizontal shear, and compression perpendicular and parallel to grain.

It also holds fasteners. Its strength combined with a superior strength-to-weight ratio, high specific gravity for excellent nail and metal truss plate-holding capability, excellent dimensional stability, the moderate decay resistance of its heartwood, and a documented performance record against strong forces from winds, storms and earthquakes have given Douglas Fir its reputation. For connection design, use a specific gravity of 0.55. The wood is tight knotted and close grained. That density is why a metal truss plate or a hanger nail bites and stays bitten.

One more practical edge: excellent dimensional stability gives “green” DF products the ability to season well in service. It moves less as it dries than weaker species do.

Grades, Spans, and the Stamp

Grade is the single biggest variable you control. For US residential builds, #2 Douglas Fir leads as the workhorse for 60-70% of projects. The ladder runs from premium to economy:

Grades range from Select Structural — premium, nearly knot-free for high-stress beams — down through No. 2, ideal for studs and joists with allowable knots; No. 1 offers cleaner appearance; No. 3 suits non-critical uses.

How much does grade actually buy you? Using DF-L 2x6 at 16” on center as the baseline:

Select Structural gives you 20 inches more than #2. #3 costs you 22 inches — and #3 is sold at the same yard, looks identical, and is often mistakenly used for structural work. Always verify the stamp. That’s the trap. Both #3 and Stud grade are sold at most yards and look identical to #2 without checking the stamp, and they span nearly 2 feet less than #2 under the same conditions.

Match the grade to the load, not the other way around. Going to Select Structural adds roughly 20 inches of span — upgrade only when the span requires it. Overbuying Select Structural for a wall full of studs is wasted material. SS exceeds needs for most frames; No. 2 meets or exceeds IRC requirements universally.

Read the stamp before you frame. Stamps reveal grade, species, moisture content (KD19 for kiln-dried), and mill. Look for KD19. KD19 (19% max) prevents shrink and cup; green lumber risks warping.

For jobs needing engineered precision, machine stress-rated material exists. DF-L 2x6 dimension lumber is produced in 2400F MSR, 1800F MSR, Select Structural, High Quality (HQ), #2 & Btr., #3, and Economy. Visual grading checks knots, splits, wane, and checks; machine stress-rated (MSR) adds precision via deflection tests.

Sizes, Lengths, and Matching Lumber to the Job

A 2x6 is nominal. The actual dimension is 38 x 140 mm — 1½” x 5½”. Dimension 2x6 runs 8 to 20 feet. Stud-grade 2x6 comes shorter and precision-cut: 6 to 10 feet, Precision End Trimmed (PET). PET stud lengths typically run 8’, 9’, and 10’.

Floor joists. The span table runs the show, not your gut. For DF-L #2 under standard residential load (40 psf live, 10 psf dead, L/360 deflection):

Douglas Fir-Larch leads at 10’-9” (12” OC) and 9’-9” (16” OC); tighter spacing increases span by 10–12%, while moving from 16” to 24” OC reduces it by 14–17%.

Wall studs. A 2x6 bearing wall allows a 10’ laterally unsupported stud height, and the listed heights are distances between points of lateral support placed perpendicular to the plane of the wall. Per the IRC stud-spacing table, a 2x6 bearing wall can support a roof and ceiling, one floor plus roof and ceiling, or two floors plus roof and ceiling depending on spacing.

Decks. Outdoor framing carries a penalty. For deck joists, the same board spans 8 to 9 feet because outdoor lumber carries a wet-service penalty. A DF-L #2 deck joist at 16” OC spans roughly 8’-8”, shorter than the same board indoors due to the wet-service factor. Deck framing also has to be treated lumber for ground contact and moisture exposure — that’s a different product line.

Roofs — and this is where Montana bites. Snow load drives rafter sizing. The Framer Series tables show how the same member loses span as snow load climbs: a 2x8 at 16” OC spans 18’-11” under 20 psf snow load but drops to 16’-6” under 30 psf snow load, both at L/240. Montana’s state minimum is 30 psf, and valley-floor and mountain sites run far higher. Pull a site-specific number from the MSU snow load tool at snowload.montana.edu and size to that, not to a generic table.

Whatever the application, work to a table — and leave margin. Stay within 90% of the table maximum: a 9’-9” allowable span means 8’-10” is your practical working span, and the 10% buffer handles lumber variation, future loads, and the natural creep that occurs as wood carries load over years. The table number isn’t the failure point. The lumber design values already include safety factors of 2.0 to 3.0; the number is the serviceability limit, with substantial margin above it. IRC mandates graded and stamped lumber for framing, and span tables dictate sizes — local amendments can upspec for seismic and wind zones.

Installation and Handling

Crown orientation first. Every board has a slight natural bow. The typical field practice is aligning crowns in the framing — crown up — and a double arrow indicates an undetectable crown edge. Set joists and rafters crown-up so loading flattens them over time instead of compounding the sag.

Cull at the pile. Check for straight grain, no excessive bow or twist — over 1/2” in 8 ft disqualifies a board. Inspect for firm knots — no loose ones — minimal shake, and fresh stamp ink.

Bearing and restraint matter at the ends. Minimum end bearing is 1½” on wood or steel, 3” on masonry, and bearing across the full joist width is required. Joists must bear directly on beams, girders, ledgers, or load bearing walls, or be supported by hangers or framing anchors.

Storage is where good lumber goes bad — and in this climate, that’s not theoretical. Stack flat on stickers, tarp loosely for air flow, and elevate off the ground; use within 6 months of kiln-drying. Wet lumber molds and moves. Get KD19 stock, keep it covered and off the dirt, and frame it before it has a chance to drink up a spring rain.

What grade of 2x6 should I use for most framing? #2 (sold as #2 & Btr.). Can I use #3 or Stud-grade 2x6 for floor joists? No. Never use #3 or Stud grade for structural floor joists — both are sold at most yards, look identical to #2 without checking the stamp, and span nearly 2 feet less under the same conditions. Reserve those for blocking and non-structural work.

Why does DF-L span farther than other framing species? Stiffness. Douglas Fir-Larch spans farthest because of its high modulus of elasticity, though the difference between DF-L and SPF at 16” OC is only 5 inches. For most jobs that gap doesn’t justify special-ordering a different species, but DF-L gives you the margin when you need it.

What does KD19 mean on the stamp, and why care? KD19 means kiln-dried to 19% maximum moisture content. KD19 prevents shrink and cup; green lumber risks warping. Drier lumber holds its shape after the wall closes up, which means fewer drywall cracks and nail pops down the road.

Which way does the crown go? Up. Standard field practice is aligning crowns in the framing. Installing joists and rafters crown-up lets the load gradually flatten the member instead of adding to its natural sag.

What sizes and lengths does a 2x6 come in? A 2x6 actually measures 1½” by 5½”. Dimension stock runs 8 to 20 feet, while PET stud-grade lengths typically run 8’, 9’, and 10’.
