For most residential framing in this part of the country, 2x8 Douglas Fir-Larch is the workhorse. It’s strong, stiff, and holds a fastener like few other softwoods. The trick isn’t whether to use it — it’s matching the grade, length, and moisture spec to the load you’re carrying. Get that wrong and you’ve got a sagging floor or a roof that won’t pass inspection.

Here’s what Fir/Larch actually is: a species combination of Douglas Fir and Western Larch, reddish brown to yellowish brown, with a high degree of hardness and good resistance to decay. Known for its strength and decay resistance, recognized by its tight, straight grain. Valued for its dimensional stability and high specific gravity, this species variety offers superior fastener holding, along with a high strength to weight ratio. Douglas fir/larch has the highest Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) value of all North American tree species.

That stiffness number matters more than most buyers realize. Douglas Fir-Larch dominates: high strength-to-weight, stiff for spans. Use for floors, walls, roofs — bends less under load. Modulus of elasticity (E) hits 1.8-2.0 million psi. Among the Western species, it sits at the top. Douglas Fir-Larch has the highest design values among Western species groups with SELECT STRUCTURAL grade BASE VALUES of 1500 psi Fb, 1000 psi Ft, 180 psi Fv, 625 psi Fc⊥, 1700 psi Fc, and 1,900,000 psi E. Compare that to the bottom of the heap — specific gravity values range from 0.36 for Western Woods and Spruce-Pine-Fir (South) to 0.50 for Douglas Fir-Larch. Denser wood, more holding power, stiffer span. That’s why it ends up under snow loads.

Grades, Sizes, and Spans

Grade is the single biggest call you’ll make. It drives cost, appearance, and how far the board will reach. Western Building Center stocks 2x8 Fir/Larch in Select Structural, in lengths from 8 through 20 feet — the 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20-foot runs.

US grading follows the American Softwood Lumber Standard (PS 20), overseen by ALSC-accredited agencies like WWPA. Grades range from Select Structural — premium, nearly knot-free for high-stress beams — to No. 2, ideal for studs and joists with allowable knots. No. 1 offers cleaner appearance; No. 3 suits non-critical uses. No. 2 is the default for good reason. SS exceeds needs for most frames but costs 2-3x more; No. 2 meets/exceeds IRC requirements universally. Reserve Select Structural for what earns it — headers, beams, anything carrying concentrated load.

If you want machine-tested precision, there’s another path. Visual grading checks knots, splits, wane, and checks; machine stress-rated (MSR) adds precision via deflection tests. In 2x8, Douglas Fir-Larch is commonly offered as 1950F MSR, alongside Select Structural, High Quality, #2 & Btr., #3, and Economy.

Now the part that trips up DIYers: a 2x8 isn’t 2 inches by 8. A 2x8 board, after being surfaced (S4S) — planed smooth on all four sides — will have an actual size of 1.5 inches by 7.25 inches. This reduction in size happens during the drying and surfacing process. Order your joist hangers and plan your layouts off the real number.

The whole point of reaching for a 2x8 is the span. Here’s what No. 2 DF-L gives you for floor joists under a 40 psf live / 10 psf dead load at L/360:

The span a 2x8 can cover depends on several factors, including species, grade, spacing, and load conditions (live, dead, snow). Step up to Select Structural and the board reaches further — Douglas Fir-Larch Select Structural 2x8 spans 15-0 at 12” spacing, 13-7 at 16”, and 11-11 at 24” under that same floor load.

Roofs are their own math because pitch changes everything. The span limits for 2x8 rafters depend on pitch, spacing, and snow load. A typical Douglas Fir-Larch No. 2 rafter spaced 24 inches apart can span up to 14 feet 3 inches with a 30-psf live load. The common uses run the gamut — floor joists, roof framing, deck supports, or stair stringers. Anywhere you need depth and stiffness in a solid-sawn member.

One caution that’s worth repeating around here: snow load isn’t a national average. At elevation, the structural demand climbs, so run your site-specific number through the MSU snow load tool before you trust any generic span chart. Always check your local building codes for updated information.

Moisture, Installation, and When to Step Up

In Montana, framing season overlaps with rain season, so moisture content is not an afterthought. Specify kiln-dried. KD19 (19% max) prevents shrink/cup; green lumber risks warping. Kiln-dried (KD19) lumber minimizes shrinkage and warping. The grade stamp tells you the seasoning condition, so read it. Moisture content designations include S-GRN (over 19% MC), S-DRY or KD (19% maximum MC), MC15 or KD15 (15% maximum MC), and KD HT (kiln dried and heat treated).

That stamp carries five pieces of information. Gradestamps contain five basic elements: WWPA certification mark, mill identification, grade designation, species identification, and condition of seasoning. No stamp, no structural use. Always verify stamps; ungraded is liability.

Installation basics that prevent callbacks: always orient the board crown-side up on horizontal runs to allow for natural leveling under load. Pick through the pile before it goes in the wall. Check for straight grain, no excessive bow/twist (>1/2” in 8 ft disqualifies). Stack flat on stickers, tarp loosely for air flow; elevate off ground. Around here, lumber stored flat on the ground under a leaky tarp warps before you ever pick it up.

Fasteners need to match the actual width, not the nominal. When working with actual 1.5” x 7.25” lumber, the correct nails, screws, and brackets are essential. Joist hangers are typically designed for nominal 2-inch lumber, but sized specifically for actual 1.5” width. Pair your framing with the right connectors and the system performs as the span tables promise.

A note on when Fir/Larch isn’t the answer. For anything touching the ground or living outside, switch species and chemistry. For outdoor structures, pressure-treated 2x8s are commonly used due to their durability and resistance to moisture. These boards are chemically infused to extend their lifespan. Pressure-treated lumber is available in different treatment levels: Above-Ground Use (UC3A, UC3B), Ground Contact (UC4A, UC4B). And when the span outruns what a solid 2x8 can carry, go engineered. Builders opt for alternative materials to achieve higher strength and longer spans: Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), engineered for longer spans and higher loads; I-Joists, lightweight and capable of spanning greater distances.
