How to Match the Right Tool to the Fastener
ToolsThe single most expensive mistake at the workbench costs almost nothing to avoid: grabbing the wrong tool for the fastener in front of you. A common pitfall is using the wrong size of screwdriver to tighten screws — it damages the screw and makes it unusable. Same story with wrenches that round off nuts and pliers used where a wrench belongs. Get the match right and the work goes faster, the hardware survives, and the tool lasts.
This guide covers the three hand-tool categories that handle nearly every fastener on a Montana jobsite: wrenches for nuts and bolts, screwdrivers for screws, and pliers for gripping and holding. If you plan to drive a nail, you need a hammer. Screws require a screwdriver. If you want to tighten or loosen a screw or pull out a nail, you need a good pair of pliers. When it comes to nuts and bolts, a wrench is the best choice.
Wrenches are used to tighten bolts and nuts. The three most common types are adjustable wrenches, combination wrenches, and torque wrenches. Each one earns its spot for a different reason.
The combination wrench is the workhorse for hex fasteners. A combination wrench is a set of wrenches of different sizes — choose the appropriate size to tighten or loosen the nut. Because the opening matches the fastener exactly, it gives the most secure grip and the least chance of rounding off corners. That’s why a fixed-size wrench beats an adjustable one whenever the right size is on hand.
The adjustable wrench is the convenience play. The adjustable wrench allows you to grasp various sizes of nut heads with perfect ease — the size of the head can be easily adjusted. Reach for it on odd sizes or when the exact fixed wrench isn’t in the box. One caution worth respecting: the force direction of various wrenches is fixed, and the mouth of the reverse force will open outward, so when applying force, confirm the force direction of the wrench.
The torque wrench is for fasteners that have to hit a number. A torque wrench is a tool that allows you to precisely apply torque to the nut. If you are doing a project from the automotive, mechanical, or electrical industries, where fasteners need to be torqued with precision, a torque wrench is ideal.
For repetitive work, sockets move faster. The socket wrench is composed of several inner hexagonal sockets and one or several handles. The sockets are arranged in sequence according to the type of bolts and can be selected as required. It is used for tightening or loosening bolts and nuts with large torque or special shapes on the head. Drives come in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2-inch sizes, scaled to the job.
Two specialty wrenches round out the family. The Allen key, or hex socket wrench, is an L-shaped hexagon rod wrench specially used for turning socket head cap screws — available in inch and metric, for tightening or loosening standard hexagon socket head cap screws. And for round stock there’s the pipe wrench. With friction and clamping force on both sides, it can fix water pipes and steel pipes, or disassemble metal pipes and other cylindrical parts. It is a common tool for pipeline installation and repair work.

A screwdriver’s whole job is transferring torque without chewing up the head, so the tip type has to match the screw. Screwdrivers are available in flathead, Phillips, Torx, and hex varieties. Pozidriv joins that list as well. Size matters as much as type. The large and small screwdrivers are expressed by the length of the body other than the handle — commonly 100mm, 150mm, 200mm, 300mm, and 400mm. Choose different screwdrivers according to the size of the screw. With cross-recess screws especially, care should be taken to make the end of the screw rod fit with the screw groove, otherwise the cross groove of the screw may be easily damaged.
For seized or high-torque screws, a chiseldriver built to take a hammer earns its keep. The Wera 977 is one example, covering fastening, chiselling and loosening seized screws.
