ToolsConcrete hand tools place, shape, and finish wet concrete before it sets. Concrete jobs are unforgiving. Once it sets, mistakes are expensive. That’s the whole reason tool choice matters here more than almost anywhere else on a jobsite. You don’t get a second pass once the slab hardens.
The right kit covers every stage of the pour — placing, leveling, floating, finishing, edging, jointing. Miss one tool when the truck shows up and the clock’s already running. This guide walks the workflow stage by stage, then covers material choices, sizing, and what’s worth owning versus renting. Same logic applies whether you’re pouring a sidewalk, a driveway, or a patio.
One rule before anything else: choose high-carbon steel or magnesium tools over plastic for durability. Plastic feels fine in the store. It won’t hold up.
Concrete moves through predictable stages, and each one needs its own tool. Skip ahead and you’ll fight the material.
Placing and leveling. First you move the mud, then you knock it flat. A comealong looks like a rake but has a long straight-edged blade, and lets you push and pull concrete into place without stopping. The screed smoothens the surface of freshly poured concrete to remove excess and brings the surface to proper grade. A straight 2x4 works as a screed in a pinch, but a purpose-made aluminum screed stays truer over a long run. Check rods come into play here too — designed to improve floor or pavement levelness, a check rod reduces bumps and fills low areas while concrete is still plastic.
Floating. This is where the surface starts to come together. Concrete floats smooth and level freshly poured concrete while removing air pockets. They come in different sizes, making them suitable for both small and large projects. For anything sizable, a bull float levels and smooths freshly poured concrete during the initial finishing process before surface water or bleed water appear. A magnesium float is the right call for the first pass — lighter than steel and it won’t stick or drag the surface.
Finishing, edging, jointing. The detail work that separates a clean slab from an amateur one. Steel trowels close the surface for a hard finish. Edgers give concrete a round edge. That rounded edge isn’t just looks — sharp right-angle edges chip, and in freeze-thaw country a rounded perimeter holds up better. For control joints, groovers are used in jointing the concrete which controls the location of cracks that may form when the slab contracts due to drying shrinkage or temperature changes. And when you need to finish a big slab without crawling out onto it, a fresno is a steel trowel attached to a bull float handle that allows finishers to trowel the concrete without walking out onto the slab.
A couple more that earn their keep: darbies are used to flatten wet concrete, and hand floats level and smooth areas around the edge of a slab to match the rest of the appearance, while hand trowels handle finishing smaller areas of concrete.
Magnesium versus steel isn’t a style preference. It’s about which stage you’re in.
Magnesium floats are lighter and won’t stick to the surface, which makes them the easier choice for the first floating pass and friendlier for a beginner. Steel trowels do the opposite job — they close and harden the surface for that final dense finish. Use them in the wrong order and you’ll trap bleed water or leave the surface open.
Finishing trowel size should track the work. Wide blades cover flat ground fast; narrower ones give you control on detail and edges. Blade profile matters too — rounded edges leave less of a line in the surface than square ones, and the same holds for bull floats. A rounded-end bull float drags less of a mark than a square-edge version.

The Western Building Center stock list runs through the practical sizes: magnesium floats in 16 and 20 in., finishing trowels in 11, 16, and 18 in. with DuraSoft handles, a fine rubber float at 9x4 in., a 6 in. cement edger with a 3/8 radius, and a Marshalltown DuraSoft hand edger with a stainless steel blade and a 1/2 in. lip. There’s a 36 in. wood concrete broom for non-slip texture and a 10x10 in. tamper for compaction work.
Most hand tools are cheap enough to own, and you’ll reach for them on every pour. The everyday kit worth buying outright: a steel-tub wheelbarrow, a concrete hoe for mixing, a magnesium float, a screed board, an edger, a stiff broom for texture, and a 4-foot level. None of it costs much, and renting the same items repeatedly makes no sense.
The big stuff is where renting pays off. Plate compactors, bull floats, electric mixers, and power trowels are better rented for occasional jobs — for larger jobs, a power trowel is one of the biggest productivity upgrades you can make, but it covers large areas quickly and is best for commercial slabs and large pours. If you’re not finishing acres of concrete, owning one is dead money sitting in the shop.
Tool care is simple and non-negotiable. Clean all tools immediately after use to prevent damage, and store them in dry areas to avoid rust. Rinse the metal the second you’re done — cured concrete on a trowel is a nightmare to remove. Surface rust won’t kill a tool’s function, but it makes cleanup harder and shortens the life of the blade.
A Montana note worth keeping in mind: in freeze-thaw country, slope and drainage matter as much as the concrete itself. A long straightedge and a level to verify pitch away from the structure protect a slab from standing water and the premature damage that comes with it. And road salt plus moisture cycling chews on reinforcing steel, so correct rebar placement and coverage carry more weight in cold-climate pours than they do down south.

Sizes run from a small knife for tight patching up to wide blades for feathering. Stainless steel blades come from 4 in. up to 14 in., giving you options whether you need a small 4–6 in. knife for tight areas and patching or a large 12–14 in. knife for wide feathering. Stainless shrugs off rust on a busy site; carbon and blue steel give you more flex but need to be dried after use.
What’s the single most important concrete finishing tool? The finishing trowel. It determines the final look and smoothness of your concrete surface — it’s essential for slabs, driveways, and patios, and has a direct impact on surface quality. Get the trowel work right and everything else follows.
