How to Choose a Step or Folding Ladder

A step or folding ladder is a self-supporting access tool — no wall needed — built for short-duration work at moderate height. Step ladders are self-supporting A-frames ideal for indoor, level-ground work like painting or repairs. For most homeowners and trades doing interior and light exterior work, this is the ladder you reach for daily.

Here’s where buyers go wrong. They obsess over height and ignore the duty rating. Then they buy a ladder rated for less than their actual loaded weight. The two specs that matter most are duty rating and material. Get those right and the rest follows.

Types and What Each One Does

The step ladder is the workhorse. Step ladders, also known as A-frame ladders, are made up of two hinged parts that can be folded together to store or transport them. They range from three to ten feet tall, with bigger variants reaching 20 feet high. Due to their large base, they are quite stable. Safety and Maintenance Basics

Falls are no joke. Most are preventable with a few habits. Ensure the base is on firm, level ground and maintain three points of contact while climbing. Avoid standing on the top two rungs or top platform unless explicitly designed for it, and never overreach—move the ladder to stay centered.

Inspect before climbing. Always inspect equipment for loose rivets, damaged feet, or compromised hinges before use. Defective ladders should be taken out of service and discarded. Don’t try to nurse a bent or cracked ladder through one more season.
