Pick the wrong blade and the job tells on you fast — snapped tangs, smoking teeth, a wandering cut that ruins the line. Match the blade to the material first, then nail the teeth-per-inch, the tooth material, and the length. Get those four right and the saw does the work instead of fighting you.
The whole decision starts with what you’re cutting. Clean wood, nail-embedded framing, thick metal, multi-material demo — each one wants a different blade. Choose blades by first identifying your material: use The Ax for wood or nail-embedded wood, The Torch for thick metal, and The Wrecker for multi-material demolition. After that, TPI fine-tunes the cut for speed versus smoothness.
Teeth-per-inch sets cut speed, cut smoothness, and how long the blade survives. The rule never changes: fewer teeth cut fast and rough, more teeth cut slow and clean. A 3 TPI blade tears through a tree root. A 24 TPI blade leaves a tidy edge on thin sheet metal.
Select the teeth per inch based on the application, ranging from 5 TPI for aggressive wood cutting to 24 TPI for thin metals. Here’s how the common ranges map out:

The Ax is the nail-embedded wood and demolition blade — 5 TPI, built with a plunge-start tip and reinforcement against hidden nails. This is the tear-out blade.
The Torch is the metal family. The Torch metal-cutting blades feature a tooth form optimized for the longest life and maximum durability, a Tough Neck engineered to protect against tang breakage, and a Grid Iron stamped honeycomb pattern throughout the body that greatly increases rigidity, making it the stiffest metal-cutting blade. Then there’s the bi-metal versus carbide question. Bi-metal costs less and works fine as a disposable blade for everyday cuts. Carbide costs more upfront but lasts dramatically longer and cuts material — like stainless steel — that bi-metal can’t touch. On tough, repeated cuts, the longer life offsets the higher price. For one-off demo, bi-metal’s the sensible pick.
Length is simple math, and getting it wrong means a blade that buckles and wanders. Length should be at least 3 inches longer than the material width to ensure stability. Width of the material plus 3 inches is your minimum.
Reciprocating blades come in 4”, 6”, 9”, and 12” lengths. Jigsaw blades run far shorter — think 2-3/4” and 4-1/8”. Profile matters too: demolition blades use a thicker, taller body that resists twisting and holds a straighter cut, standard blades run traditional thickness, and scroll-cutting blades go low-profile for tight contours.
Confirm the blade fits your tool’s clamp before anything else. Reciprocating blades use a 1/2” universal shank. Jigsaw blades use a universal tang — for example, the U-shank blade fits Milwaukee Jig Saw model 6256-6 and other popular brands.
