How to Choose the Right Bit, Blade, or Disc
ToolsPower tool accessories are the consumables and attachments that make a tool do actual work — the add-ons that help your tools do the job right, like saw blades, drill bits, and grinding wheels, which can make or break your project. The category spans drill and driver bits, saw blades for every saw type, sanding discs and pads, router bits, grinding and cutting wheels, oscillating multi-tool blades, and dust collection attachments.
Here’s the one thing that matters most: an accessory that physically clicks onto your tool is not automatically the right accessory. Just because an accessory can be attached to your power tool, it doesn’t mean it is intended for use on that tool, and it does not ensure safe operation. Speed, size, guarding, application, and mounting requirements must all be addressed. Fitment is the first question. Material match is the second. Speed rating is the third. Get those three right and you’re 90% there.
Before anything else, match the accessory to the tool’s interface. Which blade fits your saw? Which bit fits your screw? These are the questions that tool manuals leave out. The interface types you’ll deal with break down like this:

Disc sizing isn’t negotiable — 115mm, 125mm and 230mm disc sizes have specific brand and tool fitment. The outside diameter has to fall within your tool’s capacity rating, or you can’t guard it properly.
On battery platforms, the big names don’t cross over directly. Makita and DeWalt batteries are not directly interchangeable — the battery slots, voltage regulation, and communication protocols are different. One useful note for anyone running mixed packs in cold weather: battery capacity (Ah) affects runtime, not power output. A bigger pack runs longer between charges — worth knowing on a remote jobsite where the truck’s a long walk away.
Adapters do exist to bridge systems. The Makita Multi-Tool Adapter (part 313249-6) is a good example: it’s engineered for use with Dremel accessories on Makita corded and 18V cordless multi-tools, machined from high-quality steel for long life.
This is what separates a clean, fast cut from a burned edge and a dead blade. Carbide-tipped blades belong in hardwood. Masonry and SDS bits go into concrete. Bi-metal blades handle mixed material. Diamond grit is for tile and masonry.
On the metal-drilling side, the bulk of the field carries options like cobalt twist drill bits, diamond drill bits, and step-tip masonry drill bit sets. Gold-oxide and titanium-nitride coatings buy you longevity on general drilling.
Sanding is all about grit selection. Match the grit to the task — coarse grit for aggressive stock removal, finer grit for finishing. Makita’s StarlockMax pads run as coarse as a 4-1/2” Delta sanding pad in 40 grit and 50-grit grout and abrasive segmented saw blades. Start coarse, step finer, finish clean.
Match the accessory’s quality to how hard it gets worked. High-wear consumables — sanding discs, driver bits — get chewed up no matter what, so bulk packs make sense there. Reserve the premium accessories for the durable materials: carbide for repeated hardwood cutting, diamond grit for tile and masonry.
Third-party accessories have their place. Some sellers position their products as a quality contest against names like DeWalt. Fine — but a cheaper accessory only counts if it carries proper safety certs and matches your tool’s RPM rating. A disc that flies apart isn’t a deal at any price.
This is where shortcuts get people hurt. Match the attachment method — keyless chuck, collet, set screw — to your tool, and read the manual for the specific mounting it calls for. Then follow the basics that the Power Tool Institute lays out:
The speed rule is the one that ends jobs early. Accessories running faster than their rated speed can fly apart — the rated speed of the accessory must be at least equal to the maximum speed of the power tool. And get the fit right, because accessories that don’t match the mounting hardware of the power tool will run out of balance, vibrate excessively, and may break or cause the operator to lose control. Runout and wobble aren’t just sloppy. They’re a warning.
Does an accessory that fits my tool mean it’s safe to use? No. Just because an accessory can be attached to a power tool doesn’t mean it’s intended for use on that tool, and it doesn’t ensure safe operation. Speed, size, guarding, application, and mounting requirements must all be addressed. Check the owner’s manual for what the tool actually accepts.
Why does the RPM rating on a disc or blade matter? Because over-speed accessories fail violently. Accessories running faster than their rated speed can fly apart. The rated speed of the accessory must be at least equal to the maximum speed of the power tool. Always confirm the accessory’s rating equals or exceeds your tool’s no-load speed.
Can I use one brand’s batteries on another brand’s tool? Not directly. Makita and DeWalt batteries are not directly interchangeable — the battery slots, voltage regulation, and communication protocols are different. Adapters exist to bridge brands, with some limitations.
Will a bigger amp-hour battery make my drill more powerful? No. Battery capacity (Ah) affects runtime, not power output. A 5.0 Ah battery lasts longer than a 2.0 Ah but won’t spin the drill faster — the tool’s motor determines power.
What should I look for in a third-party replacement battery? Look for UL or CE certifications, a proper BMS (Battery Management System), and genuine cell brands. The cheap option is only worth it if it’s built and certified right.
How do I match a sanding grit to the job? Coarse grits remove stock fast; finer grits finish smooth. The same logic applies across pads and discs — start aggressive, step finer as you go. Makita’s StarlockMax line, for instance, includes a 4-1/2” Delta sanding pad in 40 grit for the rough work.
