A Buyer's Guide to Engineered Wood Panel Siding
SidingPanel siding is a 4-foot-wide sheet good that goes up fast and covers more wall per piece than lap. The engineered wood version has largely replaced the old plywood T1-11 that builders relied on for decades. Here’s the short version on how to choose: pick a Series (38, 76, or 190) to match your framing spacing, pick an edge profile based on whether you’re going vertical or horizontal, pick a texture, and then follow the install rules to the letter — because sloppy installation voids the warranty.
Old-school T1-11 is plywood. T1-11 is a type of plywood panel siding known for its distinctive grooves, featuring evenly spaced vertical grooves on the surface. Today, when building professionals or customers search for “T1-11 siding” they are often looking for the grooved panel look. The engineered wood version gives you that same grooved appearance without the moisture and rot headaches plywood develops in a Montana climate.
The durability comes from the treatment process. With four components of protection, the SmartGuard process adds strength and helps these products withstand impacts, damage from freeze/thaw cycles, high humidity, fungal decay and more. That freeze/thaw resistance is the line that matters most around here — valley floors cycle through 100-plus freeze-thaw events a year, and that’s exactly what cracks lesser materials.
On the engineering side, the panels are rated for real structural work. At the time of manufacture, siding meets or exceeds the performance standards set forth in ICC-ES AC321 and has achieved recognition under PR-N124, ESR-1301, CCMC 11826-L, FL#9109 and HUD-MR-1318d. The grooved panel in particular carries that rating — LP’s grooved panel siding option is durable, resistant to termites and fungal decay, and helps protect against many weather conditions because of the SmartGuard process. It’s rated for structural use and comes in Cedar Texture with defining shadow lines that provide the realistic look of traditional wood.
One more reason it earns its keep on a jobsite: handling. It’s lighter than fiber cement and easier to carry, with no special equipment needed for cutting or installing — it works and cuts like traditional wood. Compared to fiber cement, virtually every piece leaves the mill straight and ready to use, and it’s less prone to accidental breakage during handling and installation.
The first decision is the edge profile, and it dictates how you can hang the panel. Panel siding products are available in 3 edge profiles: shiplap edge with alignment bead (applies to the 4-inch o.c. and 8-inch o.c. grooved panel), shiplap edge without alignment bead (no groove panel), and square edge (no groove panel).
That profile choice locks in your orientation. No Groove square edge panel siding may be installed vertically or horizontally. Shiplap edge panel siding is limited to vertical applications. If you want the option to run panels horizontally, you need the square-edge no-groove.
Grooved panels mimic the classic T1-11 look. Grooves are nominally spaced 4 or 8 inches apart — 4” o.c. or 8” o.c. The grooved profile comes in Cedar Texture, available in many length options up to 12 feet.
Series and texture round out the spec. The 38, 76 and 190 Series come in Cedar Texture, Brushed Smooth, or Pebbled Stucco primed panel siding, including SilverTech and SmartFinish. For prefinished, ExpertFinish Panel & Vertical Siding is available in 16 factory-finished colors and 3 unique textures.
One critical distinction for the shed crowd: SilverTech and SmartFinish are not house siding. Panel siding with SilverTech or SmartFinish is developed specifically for sheds and other accessory structures where the interior wall cavities are without insulation or wall finishes — for non-residential use only.

The sizes carried under the Western Building Center umbrella run through the common configurations: 3/8” no-groove shiplap in 4×10, a 3/8” 4×8 wafer no-groove panel, 7/16” 4×8 no-groove shiplap primed, a 7/16” 4×8 T1-11 8”-o.c. groove, plus 4×9 no-groove shiplap and 4×9 wafer T1-11 8”-o.c. options.
There’s more than one way to get the board-and-batten farmhouse look, and which you pick depends on wall height and how much you hate seams. For builders there are three siding options that can be used to achieve the board and batten look, each with unique benefits — the most common options involve panel and vertical siding, while lap siding installed vertically offers another method.
The basic size difference: panel siding is a four-foot wide sheet varying in lengths starting at eight feet, while vertical siding is narrower and longer, measuring 16 inches wide by 16 feet long and installed vertically on the wall.
Panel’s strength is speed and seam reduction. Panel siding covers a larger area per piece than vertical siding, which saves time and can also help reduce the number of vertical seams. It also gives you flexibility on batten layout — “the panel allows the batten trim to be spaced at different intervals to better allow the homeowner to have the appearance they prefer.”
For tall walls, vertical siding wins. While the width of panel siding helps to reduce vertical seams, vertical siding helps contribute to fewer seams if you are siding taller walls — it comes in 16-foot lengths, which helps reduce the amount of joint or flashing details needed. A pro running tall buildings noted “I can typically get away without any joints all the way to the soffit lines.” With vertical, battens would need to be placed at least 16 inches apart to cover the seams between pieces, but more battens could be added beyond the minimum.
The third path: lap siding installed vertically can also get you the board and batten look. One advantage is that it offers more width options for customizing the look — lap siding ranges from 6 to 12 inches wide and comes in 16-foot lengths.
Read this part twice. The warranty is conditional, and the language is blunt: failure to follow the published instructions will make the limited warranty inapplicable as to the products affected by such failure. Warranty remedies are not available if these instructions are not followed. Nobody wants that call.
The non-negotiables:
Clearances and barrier. A minimum six-inch clearance must be maintained between siding and finish grade, and a properly installed water resistive barrier is required behind siding — consult your local building code for details. Around walking surfaces, siding applied adjacent to porches, patios, balconies, or walking surfaces must have a clearance of at least 1 inch above the horizontal surface.
Fasteners. Use hot-dipped galvanized fasteners to fasten panel siding to structural framing. Skip the staples.
Seal every cut. This is where Montana installs fail. Moisture finds raw edges. All wood substrate directly exposed to the weather must be sealed to prevent moisture intrusion. Seal ALL exposed cuts of siding and trim — field spray applied coatings on cuts are not recommended. Sealing can be accomplished by applying a paint or sealant according to the manufacturer’s requirements.
Gaps at trim. Where siding butts window trim, door casings, butt joints, etc., leave a 3/16 inch gap and seal. A larger gap is required when siding is adjacent to stucco, brick, cultured stone, or mortar.
Storage before it ever goes up. Don’t let lumber sit out in a Montana yard and warp on you. Store siding under a roof or waterproof covering, off the ground on a flat-drained surface using supports that provide a minimum 1-1/2 inch clearance from the surface.
Don’t side a wet building. Do not apply engineered wood siding to a structure having excessive moisture conditions such as drying concrete, plaster, or wet blown cellulose insulation.
Furring caution. LP does not recommend panel siding for use over furring strips/strapping or in ICF assemblies — if used, it will not warrant for buckling. That’s worth knowing if you’re tempted to build a rain screen gap behind it.
This is where engineered wood panel earns its place in a hail-and-wind state. It helps deliver superior protection against hail, wind, moisture, fungal decay, and termites, and is designed to withstand tough storms with wind gusts of up to 200 miles per hour. On impact specifically, it’s more resistant to impact than fiber cement, survives golf-ball-sized hail, and stays attached to a home better than fiber cement during extreme weather events.
The warranty is the headline number. All SmartSide products come backed by a 5/50-year prorated limited warranty. That breaks down as a 5/50-year limited warranty covering both labor and material replacement. Run the prefinished line and you add coverage on the finish itself.
A note on primed product if you’re not buying prefinished: get paint on it. The whole reason it’s primed is to take a topcoat that protects the substrate. UV at Montana elevation fades and degrades finishes faster than down low, so don’t let a primed wall sit naked through a building season.
