How to Choose the Right Series for Your Framing
SidingPrimed lap siding is an engineered-wood alternative to traditional clapboards that ships pre-primed and ready to paint. The strand-based version — LP SmartSide being the common one — is treated to the core through a manufacturing process that uses a carefully formulated mix of resins, waxes and zinc borate, which adds strength and helps the product resist termites and fungal decay as well as moisture intrusion. After that treatment, a water-resistant, resin-saturated overlay is bonded to the product.
Here’s the single decision that matters most before you order: thickness series. LP SmartSide primed lap comes in 38 and 76 Series, in Brushed Smooth or Cedar Texture. The series dictates how far apart your studs can be. Get this wrong and your siding won’t have the backing it needs.
The other big draw for anyone coming off fiber cement: workability. It cuts with standard woodworking tools, unlike fiber cement cladding that recommends expensive diamond blades. These products weigh less, resist breakage during handling, and come pre-primed and ready to paint. No silica dust, no carbide blades, no fighting brittle planks on a windy Montana jobsite.
For sheds, garages, and light commercial, there’s also a panel option. The strand lap comes in 16-foot lengths, which may lead to fewer seams and cuts compared to fiber cement’s 12-foot lengths. That length matters in cold country — fewer butt joints means fewer places for water to sneak in during freeze-thaw.
Western Building Center’s lap and panel lineup includes several widths and profiles. The strand lap shows up as 6-inch, 8-inch, and 12-inch products in 16-foot lengths, plus a 16-inch LP vertical siding sheet. Coverage on the 8-inch texture lap runs roughly 9.3 square feet per piece. There’s also a random-shake panel and matching primed textured corners and dividers in 8-inch and 12-inch sizes.

TruWood’s self-aligning feature creates ease of installation and labor savings, and the product installs 25–40% faster than cement or vinyl sidings. It’s pre-primed and resists mildew, rot, and termite damage.
How to pick the series. The 38 Series is the thinner profile and needs tighter framing support. The 76 Series carries more across a span. Match the series to your stud spacing and sheathing before you write the order — that’s the call that prevents a callback. When you’re nailing to something other than standard studs — wood structural panel sheathing, SIPs, steel studs, or ICF — there are Alternate Fastening Options for those substrates, so confirm the schedule for your wall assembly.
The clearances aren’t suggestions. A minimum 6 inch clearance must be maintained between siding and finish grade (ground cover). In Montana, where snow piles against a wall for months, that ground gap is what keeps the bottom course out of standing meltwater. And siding adjacent to porches, patios, balconies, or walking surfaces must have a clearance of at least 1 inch above the horizontal surface.
Gapping and sealing are where freeze-thaw country bites the careless. Where siding butts window trim, door casings, etc., leave a 3/16 inch gap and seal. Most important detail in this whole guide: all wood substrate directly exposed to the weather must be sealed to prevent moisture intrusion — seal ALL exposed cuts of siding and trim. Every cut end you leave raw is an open door for water, and 100-plus freeze-thaw cycles a year will find it. Note that field spray-applied coatings on cuts are not recommended — brush them.
Install over a water-resistive barrier and get flashing right. All openings must be properly sealed or flashed in a manner that prevents moisture intrusion or buildup. Install step flashing at roof-to-wall intersections with a minimum 4 inch upper leg, and properly integrate flashing with the WRB, using WRB or flashing tape to maintain the counterflashing principle.
A note on moisture before you start: do not apply engineered wood siding to a structure having excessive moisture conditions such as drying concrete, plaster, or wet blown cellulose insulation. Let the wet stuff dry first.
Trim is not optional, and you can’t use lap as trim. Use a minimum 540 Series trim so the lap siding does not extend beyond the face of the trim. If trim is installed over the lap, a thinner 440 or 190 Series trim may be used. And lap siding is not designed to be used as trim — the exception being that lap siding may be used as fascia. Undersized trim leaves your siding sticking out past the trim face, which looks wrong and sheds water wrong.
How is engineered-wood lap siding different from traditional wood clapboards? It’s a strand-based product treated all the way through rather than solid sawn boards. The warranty covers impacts from hail up to 1.75 inches in diameter, and the lap siding is designed to withstand wind gusts of up to 200 miles per hour — relevant anywhere storm exposure and chinook winds are a factor. The treatment also helps the product withstand impacts, freeze/thaw cycles, high humidity, and fungal decay.
What warranty comes with it? For LP SmartSide, there’s a 50-year limited warranty for the substrate and 100% labor and material in the first 5 years; ExpertFinish products include an additional 15-year limited warranty for the finish. The TruWood self-aligning lap carries a 30-year limited warranty. Worth remembering: failure to follow the published instructions makes the limited warranty inapplicable as to the affected products.
Is it lighter and faster to install than fiber cement? Yes on both. LP SmartSide lap siding is 45% lighter weight per square foot than fiber cement, and its 16-foot lengths may lead to fewer seams and cuts compared to fiber cement’s 12-foot lengths. TruWood’s self-aligning profile claims a 25–40% faster install than cement or vinyl sidings.
When do I have to paint primed siding after install? Primed siding is the ready-to-paint option. Finish it promptly with a high-quality acrylic latex paint per the manufacturer’s instructions, and remember to seal all exposed cuts — raw edges are the first failure point in freeze-thaw climates.
