Primed 5/4 trim is the heavy board in the SmartSide lineup. It’s engineered wood strand — not solid lumber, not fiber cement — treated all the way through and pre-primed at the factory so it’s ready for paint the day it hits the wall. For Montana exteriors fighting freeze-thaw and wind-driven moisture, it solves problems traditional cedar trim can’t. But the warranty that makes it worth specifying hinges on installation details most buyers get wrong. More on that below.

Here’s the short version. The 5/4 board measures a full 1-1/8” thick. That extra thickness matters when you’re trimming a house clad in LP lap siding — the thicker board helps keep lap siding edges from sticking out past the trim. If you’re running SmartSide lap, step up to the 5/4. If you just need clean window and door surrounds on a lighter cladding, the thinner series will do.

All three share the same DNA. They offer the warmth and beauty of traditional wood along with the advantages of engineered wood — products that are more durable and consistent than traditional wood materials. Free of knots and common defects, they resist twisting, warping, cupping and shrinking. And here’s the part contractors coming off fiber cement will appreciate: they work and cut just like traditional wood, taking nails and screws with ease — with no special tools required.

The 540 Series 5/4 SmartTrim runs in widths of 2”, 3”, 4”, 6”, 8”, 10”, and 12”, all in 16-foot lengths. Western Building Center carries the textured 5/4 boards in 4”, 6”, 8”, 10”, and 12” widths. Those 16-foot lengths cut down on seams and improve efficiency on the job.

Two textures are on the table. Cedar Texture gives a realistic, deep cedar-grain look with defining shadow lines, while Brushed Smooth provides a modern nod to painted wood. On finish, you’ve got choices: Primed, ExpertFinish, and Custom Color options. The primed board is the workhorse here — don’t see your color inspiration? Primed is ready to be painted any color you like. ExpertFinish comes factory-finished in 16 colors if you’d rather skip the field-painting.

Why SmartGuard Holds Up in Montana Weather

The reason this trim beats solid wood in this climate comes down to what’s baked into the substrate. Every step of the SmartGuard manufacturing process is designed to create the most durable product possible. That includes the application of zinc borate throughout the substrate to create materials that resist both fungal decay and termite damage. It’s treated to the core, not just surface-coated.

That through-treatment matters where it counts. The SmartGuard process adds strength and helps the products withstand impacts, freeze/thaw cycles, high humidity, and more. Installation Rules That Protect the Warranty

This is where the 5/50 either holds up or evaporates. The single thing most buyers get wrong is treating engineered trim like it’s bulletproof. It isn’t — every cut you make opens up raw fiber, and raw fiber is where moisture gets in.

Seal every field-cut edge. Primer plus 100% acrylic latex paint on every cut, no exceptions. Skip it and you’ve voided your coverage at that joint.

Don’t rip, rout, or miter the edges. Those operations expose unprotected fiber that the factory priming was never meant to cover. Join boards with 45-degree diagonal cuts or simple butt joints instead.

Keep it off the ground. Minimum 6” clearance to finished grade, and at least 1” above sloped hard surfaces. Never set trim in direct contact with masonry or concrete. In snow country this is non-negotiable — snow piles against the wall at grade and sits there for weeks, and trim buried in a drift wicks water it was never designed to handle. Drip cap, kick-out flashing, and working gutters keep roof runoff and snowmelt off the boards where it counts.

For fastening: a fine-tooth carbide-tipped blade for clean cuts, 8d hot-dipped galvanized nails — no staples — driven into framing up to 24” on center.

One more thing worth respecting at the saw. Drilling, sawing, sanding or machining wood products can expose you to wood dust. Avoid inhaling wood dust or use a dust mask or other safeguards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “5/4” actually mean on a trim board? It’s a thickness designation. The 5/4 board is a full 1-1/8” thick — heavier than the 4/4 (nominal 1”) and 5/8” series. The added thickness gives you a stronger reveal and keeps lap siding edges from poking past the trim.

Why not just use cedar or pine trim? Engineered trim is treated through the core against rot and termites and resists the warping and cupping that plague solid wood. Are special tools needed to install it? No. Unlike fiber cement products, these require no special tools during installation. They also weigh less per foot than fiber cement trim and siding, so breakage, installation costs and installation time are all reduced. A fine-tooth carbide blade and hot-dipped galvanized nails are all you need.

What’s the one mistake that voids the warranty? Leaving field cuts unsealed. Every cut edge must get primer and 100% acrylic latex paint. Combine that with keeping the boards 6” off grade and out of contact with concrete, and the 5/50 coverage stays intact.
