Choosing Between Decay Resistance and Reusable Concrete Forms

Two products live under one category name, and crews mix them up constantly. One resists rot. The other molds concrete and gets reused. Picking wrong wastes money or fails early.

Preservative-treated plywood is the rot-fighter. It’s impregnated with preservatives by a pressure process, and the resulting deep penetration of preservative provides protection against decay and insect attack. That’s the panel for ground contact, foundations, and anywhere Montana moisture and freeze-thaw work against bare wood.

Formply is a different animal. It’s film-faced plywood constructed with veneers and a phenolic overlay film on both sides to prevent concrete sticking to the plywood. The film also provides some water protection, which means washing down and reusing is an option. The whole point is a smooth concrete face you can strip clean and pour against again.

One caution that trips people up: formply is moisture-resistant, not waterproof. It can be used in areas where it can get wet occasionally, but is not suitable enough for areas where it will be constantly exposed to water. Formply is not fully waterproof like marine plywood. Don’t treat it like a permanent water barrier.

Preservative-Treated Plywood: Where Rot and Insects Threaten

Most jobs don’t need treated wood. But in some uses, and in certain climates, treated wood is recommended or required by local building codes to protect against decay, fungi, termites, carpenter ants or other wood-destroying insects. Montana’s wet soils, high water tables, and freeze-thaw cycling put that squarely on the table for ground-contact work.

The application list is long. Pressure-preservative-treated plywood is used for wood foundations, bulkheads, retaining walls, irrigation structures, decks, docks, piers and floats, planters, and roof, wall, and floor sheathing where resistance to termites or decay is required. And the panel doesn’t give up its working properties to gain that protection — preservative-treated plywood maintains stiffness and strength, thermal properties, workability, light weight and economy.

The grade you specify depends on exposure. The American Wood Protection Association uses a Use Category System, with service conditions designated into five basic use categories in AWPA Standard U1. The categories run from dry interior to ground contact:

For Montana ground-contact work — posts, foundations, retaining walls in wet soil — UC4A is the floor. The applicable standards for preservative treatment include AWPA Standard U1, with related specifications including U.S. Product Standard PS 1. Spec the category to the exposure, not the other way around.

Formply: The Reusable Concrete Form

Formply earns its keep through repeated pours, so adhesive bond is everything. The film looks nice, but the glue holds the panel together under wet, loaded conditions. Prioritize a phenol formaldehyde Type A bond. Premium grade phenolic resin is used as the lamination glue, so formply is made using type-A marine bond, the strongest type of plywood bond available, making it an exceptionally strong plywood.

That bond is what survives Montana’s temperature swings. The type-A bond glue is formulated to withstand temperature changes and remain strong in wet conditions, so the sheets will not be weakened or become fragile by repeated temperature changes, and the structure is not affected by exposure to moisture. The Metsä Wood Form panels run the same chemistry — birch veneers bonded with weather and boil-resistant phenol formaldehyde adhesive, meeting EN 314-2 Class 3 (exterior) and WBP requirements.

Stress grade and thickness — sizing the panel to the pour

Formply comes in stress grades that tell you how much load it carries. Stress grades run F14, F17, F22, and F27 to suit your structural needs. F17 is the common all-purpose grade for wall and slab support.

Thickness drives how much concrete pressure a panel handles at a given span. The Metsä Wood pressure tables make the relationship plain — at a 300mm span in the panel lengthwise direction, permissible concrete pressure climbs from 5.9 kN/m² for a 9mm panel to 80.9 kN/m² for a 30mm panel. Thicker panel, more pressure, fewer supports. Size accordingly.

A typical 17mm F17 panel uses a hardwood core, 160 gsm black film at Class 2, and runs 6–12% moisture content. For bigger surfaces with fewer seams, L and XL panels enable large concrete surfaces with fewer joints.

Western Building Center’s commodity sheets cover both sides of this category — a 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch 4x8 treated plywood at .60 retention, plus a 3/4-inch 4x8 BB-OES form ply for concrete work.

Reuse, edge sealing, and on-site care

The money is in the reuse count. The number of uses can rise up to 30–100 but is highly dependent on the used overlay, site practice, requirements of concrete finish, the quality of release agent, and the maintenance, handling and storage practices. Sloppy handling kills that fast.

Seal every cut. Factory edges come protected, but the moment you trim a sheet you’ve opened raw wood. Coated plywood is supplied with all four edges painted to reduce moisture penetration. Restore that protection after cutting or drilling — paint unprotected edges and drill holes with an edge sealant, using an appropriate enamel or acrylic edge sealant.

New panels need conditioning before the first pour, especially in a climate where sheets move between dry storage and wet jobsite. Panels arrive relatively dry. When first exposed to weather on site, moisture uptake may cause localised swelling of the wood veneer, leaving impressions in the finished concrete — known as ‘rippling,’ particularly common with phenol-film plywood. The panel should be conditioned prior to first use, for example by applying a wet cement slurry or grout wash.

Then maintain it between pours. Oil the panels before each use, using a high-quality, biodegradable release agent. For minimal surface damage, fasten support to the panel from the back. After stripping: clean immediately, use plastic or nylon tools to avoid surface damage, degrease with soapy water before reapplying release agent, and repair small scratches with mastic or epoxy filler. Store flat. Protect panels from water and direct sunlight, and store on leveled ground to avoid deflection.

Matching Panel to Application

The split is clean once you know what each product is for.

Reach for preservative-treated plywood when decay or insects are the enemy — wood foundations, retaining walls, decks, docks, planters, and sheathing where resistance to termites or decay is required. Ground contact means UC4. Above-grade exposed means UC3B.

Reach for formply when you need a smooth, reusable concrete face. It’s trusted for structural formwork including decks, walls, columns, stairs, and edges, suitable for multiple reuses with proper form release practices. Expect a Class 2 finish on that first pour and plan your form layout around the panel sizes you’ve got.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between treated plywood and formply? Treated plywood is pressure-impregnated with preservatives to resist decay, fungi, and insects in moisture- and ground-contact applications. Formply is plywood with a phenolic film on both faces, built to mold concrete and be stripped, cleaned, and reused. One fights rot; the other shapes concrete. They are not interchangeable.

Is formply waterproof? No. The film and phenolic bond make it moisture-resistant and able to handle occasional wetting, but it is not fully waterproof like marine plywood and should not be used where it will be constantly exposed to water.

How many times can formply be reused? Anywhere from 30 to 100 times. The exact number depends on the overlay, the release agent quality, the concrete finish required, and how well the panels are cleaned, handled, and stored between pours.

Which adhesive bond should formply have? A phenol formaldehyde Type A (marine) bond. That glue withstands temperature changes and wet conditions without weakening — exactly what repeated pours through wide seasonal swings demand.

Why do I need to condition a new formply panel? New panels arrive dry. The first exposure to site moisture can swell the veneer and leave impressions, called rippling, in the concrete surface. A wet cement slurry or grout wash before the first pour reduces that effect.

What stress grade of formply should I use? F17 is the common all-purpose grade for wall and slab support. Heavier loads or larger spans may call for F22 or F27. Match stress grade and thickness to the concrete pressure and support spacing your pour requires.

What use category of treated plywood do I need for ground contact? UC4A covers general ground-contact work like fence and deck posts. UC4B is the heavy-duty category for permanent wood foundations and building poles. For above-ground exposed work like decking and railings, UC3B applies.
