How to Pick the Right Grade and Thickness

It’s construction-grade plywood used for roof sheathing, wall sheathing, subfloors, and temporary job-site surfaces — the letters mean C-grade face, D-grade back, and exterior-type glue, so it handles short-term moisture exposure but isn’t the choice for cabinets, furniture, or visible interior projects. Buried under shingles, siding, or finished flooring, it does its job and nobody ever sees it. That’s exactly the point.
Here’s the part that trips people up. The X refers to Exposure 1 or exterior-type glue — it helps the panel resist temporary moisture during construction, but it does not make CDX suitable for continuous outdoor exposure. Water-resistant, not waterproof. In Montana, where rain or wet snow can hit your decking before the roof’s closed in, that distinction matters. Cover it and dry-store it, and CDX earns its keep for decades.
Three letters, three pieces of information. The C refers to the grade of the front veneer — a C-grade face is structurally sound, but it may include knots, patches, repairs, or color variation. That C-grade veneer allows visible knots and repairs up to 1 1/2 inches in diameter, making it suitable for applications where appearance is less critical than functionality. The back is rougher. The D refers to the back veneer — a D-grade back is rougher than C-grade, with more natural imperfections, because it is not intended to remain visible.
The X is the part that earns the panel its place outdoors during framing. It stands for exterior-grade adhesive — phenol-formaldehyde or phenolic resin glue. This is the critical differentiator, making CDX resistant to moisture and able to withstand exposure to weather, humidity, and moisture without the adhesive failing.
Strength comes from how it’s built. Thin veneers are glued together with alternating grain directions — this cross-laminated construction helps the panel hold nails securely, resist bending, and distribute loads evenly. That multi-directional strength makes CDX excellent for structural applications like roof trusses, floor joists, and wall sheathing where loads come from multiple directions.
One thing to keep straight. The gluing bonds veneers thoroughly enough that panels resist warping and twisting even under stress, and the glue maintains integrity in damp conditions. However, the veneer itself can absorb moisture, so protective coatings remain important for long-term durability.
This is where the costly mistakes happen. Pick the wrong thickness for your framing spacing and you’ve either wasted money or built in a callback. The panel itself tells you what it’s rated for — read the stamp.

These thicknesses match common construction needs for different load and span requirements. For roof decks, 5/8 CDX is most common because it provides adequate support for standard rafter spacing while keeping weight manageable. On floors, common thicknesses include 3/4 for 16″ spans and 5/8 for 19.2″ or 24″ joist spacing.
Don’t default to the thinnest panel to save a few bucks — especially on a roof deck carrying a Montana snow load. Match the thickness to the span and the load, then verify it. Always check the APA span rating stamp on each sheet to confirm suitability for your joist spacing and load requirements. Panels are cut to standard sizes, usually 4 × 8 ft, and stamped with grade and exposure information.

The right job for CDX is hidden structural work. It uses exterior adhesive, but it’s not intended for projects where the panel surface will be seen — instead, CDX is an affordable, structural-grade option for roof decking, wall sheathing, and subfloors hidden beneath carpet, hardwood, or tile. On a roof deck it provides a solid surface for shingles or underlayment and can handle short-term exposure before the roof covering goes on. As wall sheathing beneath siding or brick veneer, it ties studs together, adds rigidity, and helps resist racking in high winds. It also pulls duty on concrete forms, ramps, and job-site platforms where appearance isn’t the priority.
Where it doesn’t belong: anything you’ll see. CDX is the workhorse built for performance, not looks — for cabinets, furniture, drawers, and visible interiors, higher-grade options are the better choice. If one face will show or get painted, step up. ACX has an A-grade front face that’s smooth and nearly knot-free — you can stain it, paint it, or apply clear finish and it’ll look professional. BCX runs a B face sanded smooth with only small, tight knots, suited to conditions where moisture may occasionally be present.
And here’s the hard line for Montana builders: standard CDX is not for ground contact or constant wet. Pressure-treated plywood gets chemical preservatives to resist rot, mold, and insects — and it’s the only option for ground-contact applications. Never reach for interior plywood outdoors. It uses non-waterproof glue that delaminates when exposed to moisture, and even painted or sealed it’ll fail outdoors — often within a year or two.
These are the three panels you’re actually weighing at the yard. The trade-offs come down to moisture and budget.

CDX wins for applications needing superior fastener holding or smoother nailing surfaces. The moisture behavior is what matters most in a freeze-thaw climate. Plywood handles moisture cycles more predictably — OSB tends to swell at the edges when soaked, which can compromise flooring or roofing over time, which is why many contractors still prefer plywood for roofing and subfloors.
RTD is the step up for wetter, longer exposure. RTD refers to the manufacturing process — the plywood is made using high-heat and pressure-controlled bonding systems, with sensors used during production to monitor and control temperature, ensuring proper glue bonding. The practical result: RTD offers better durability, glue bonding, and moisture resistance, making it the preferred option for long-term and exterior applications, while CDX remains popular for standard subfloors and temporary structures due to its affordability.
The simple rule: CDX for standard covered work, RTD when it’ll see more weather or stay exposed longer, and BCX or ACX only when a surface will be seen or painted.
Even budget CDX lasts decades when it’s handled right. The fundamentals: install panels perpendicular to framing with 1/8-inch expansion gaps, stagger joints, and use manufacturer-specified nailing patterns.
Storage is where a lot of good lumber goes bad before it’s even installed. Store panels flat, elevated, and dry to prevent warping, and acclimate the wood to site conditions before installation to minimize buckling. In a climate that swings hard on temperature and humidity, that acclimation step isn’t optional if you want flat panels.
Finishing extends the life dramatically — and the edges are the weak point. Apply exterior-grade primer and paint, or use exterior stain and sealant on all surfaces and edges, and seal cut edges immediately because exposed end grain absorbs water like a sponge. Even affordable CDX can last decades with proper finishing. The numbers back it up: CDX lasts 15-25 years in covered applications, but only 5-10 years fully exposed. Cover it, seal it, and it’ll outlast the framing schedule by decades.
