How to Choose the Right Grade, Size, and Rating
Building MaterialsA treated 6x6 is the workhorse post for any outdoor build that needs to carry a load or sit in the ground. The pressure-treatment process loads standard lumber — usually spruce or pine — into a sealed tank where a vacuum sucks the air out of the wood’s pores, then forces a preservative solution deep into the fibers under pressure. This isn’t a surface coating. The treatment penetrates to the core, which is what separates it from brush-on dips that crumble in a few short years.
Here’s the single decision that matters most: read the end tag for the Use Category rating before you buy anything. Ground Contact (UC4A) is the only acceptable choice for buried fence posts — it’s saturated with a much higher concentration of preservatives, arming it against moisture, soil microbes, and freeze-thaw cycles. Get that wrong and the rest doesn’t matter.
The classic gotcha for anyone new to buying it: a 6x6 doesn’t measure six inches. That’s the nominal size — what the lumber is called before it’s dried and planed at the mill. The actual dimensions come in closer to 5.5 inches by 5.5 inches, so plan your project around 5.5” x 5.5” when buying post caps and brackets. Use the nominal number for your calculations and you’ll end up with hardware that doesn’t fit. Figure roughly 9 pounds per linear foot, give or take with moisture.
The stamp on the end of the post is your guide to where that wood is built to live. It’s easy to assume all treated 6x6s are the same — that’s a costly mistake. Learning to read the tag is the most important thing you can do to build something that actually lasts.

Above-ground lumber buried in the dirt is asking to rot out. For any 6x6 you plan to bury, insist on a Ground Contact rating. Choosing less is like sending a soldier into battle without armor — it won’t survive the fight against wet, heavy soil.
For Montana’s freeze-thaw and clay-heavy ground, UC4B is the smart upgrade on anything buried or set in concrete. 6x6 posts are frequently embedded in soil or installed against concrete, creating prolonged exposure to moisture and decay organisms — conditions that fall into a higher decay hazard category, which is exactly why UC4B exists. Most retail 6x6 posts are treated to UC4A, around 0.15 pcf MCA, which is fine for general ground contact. But the AWPA defines UC4B for critical structural members where replacement would be difficult or costly.
The payoff for matching the rating is real. According to the American Wood Protection Association, using the correct UC rating can extend the lifespan of treated wood by up to 5 times compared to an inadequate rating.
Grade matters too, especially on vertical posts. #1 grade Southern Yellow Pine offers fewer and smaller knots, straighter grain, and more predictable performance under load. Those traits reduce checking, twisting, and long-term deformation — problems amplified when posts are buried or locked into concrete footings. Big-box suppliers tend to prioritize cost, so the common retail stock is #2 grade.
Western Building Center carries treated 6x6 timbers at a .60 retention level in 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 20-foot lengths.
Pressure treatment forces preservatives deep into the wood cells for long-lasting protection against decay, insects, and fungal attack. The most common preservatives are Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ), Copper Azole (CA), and Micronized Copper Azole (MCA).
How they compare: ACQ is effective but more corrosive to fasteners. CA is similar but generally less corrosive. MCA is a newer generation treatment, often preferred for its lower environmental impact and reduced corrosion. Older lumber — pre-2004 — often used Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA), which is highly effective but no longer used for most residential applications due to arsenic concerns.
Those copper treatments eat ordinary fasteners. Hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel hardware is recommended. Use ZMAX or hot-dip galvanized post brackets to keep the wood off concrete and standing moisture.
A 4x4 is fine for a standard backyard privacy fence. The 6x6 earns its keep when loads and exposure climb. 6x6 treated posts are recommended for taller fences, heavy gates, corner posts, and locations with high wind loads or sloping terrain. That thicker 5.5” profile gives the stability you want for hanging solid gates and standing up to wind.
Beyond fencing, the 6x6 is the post for deck supports, retaining walls, landscape timbers, pergolas, and structural framing. And check your code before you spec — many jurisdictions now require 6x6 posts for all deck supports regardless of height.
Even correctly rated lumber fails early when it’s installed wrong. Even the best treated lumber will fail early if it’s installed poorly. A few practices protect the investment:
Do it right and the numbers reward you. With the right treatment, installation, and site conditions, pressure-treated posts can last 20 to 40 years. In dry, well-drained soil a properly installed post reaches the upper end; in wet, clay-heavy, or poorly drained sites, life expectancy is shorter.

What fasteners work with treated 6x6? Hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel hardware is recommended because the copper in modern treatments corrodes ordinary fasteners. ACQ is the most corrosive of the common treatments; MCA runs lower.
Concrete or gravel around the post? Concrete footings create a rigid base for most residential fences, but in heavy clay or poorly drained soils, gravel backfill drains better and reduces frost heave. In the region’s wet clay and freeze-thaw, gravel is usually the better bet.
How deep should the post go? Plan to bury about one-third of the post length, and always below your local frost depth. Western Montana frost lines run deep, so depth isn’t the place to cut corners.
